Professor Amir Banihashemi was born in Isfahan, Iran. He finished high-school at the age of 16, and received the B.A.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from Isfahan University of Technology, Isfahan, Iran (GPA: 19.40/20.00), and the M.A.Sc. degree in communication engineering from Tehran Univesity, Tehran, Iran, (GPA: 18.74/20.00), with the highest academic rank in both classes.
During 1994-1997, Prof. Banihashemi was with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, working towards the Ph.D. degree (GPA: 96.5/100.0). He held two Ontario Graduate Scholarships for international students during this period. In 1997, he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where he worked as a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Post-Doctoral Fellow. He joined the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering (SCE) at Carleton University in 1998 as an Assistant Professor and was subsequently promoted to Associate Professor in 2003. Since 2009, after an early promotion, he has been a Full Professor in the SCE Department.
Professor Banihashemi served as an Editor for IEEE Transactions on Communications from 2003 to 2009. He has been involved in many international conferences as chair, member of technical program committee and member of organizing committee. These include co-chair for Communication Theory Symposium of Globecom'07, TPC co-chair of Information Theory Workshop (ITW) 2007, member of organizing committee for International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT) 2008, and co-chair of Canadian Workshop on Information Theory (CWIT) 2009. Professor Banihashemi has been an invited speaker in a number of conferences, workshops and industrial forums, including a plenary speaker at the 23rd Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering, Calgary, May 2-5, 2010. He was a member of the Board of Directors for the Canadian Society of Information Theory from 2000 to 2010, and the Director of Broadband Communications and Wireless Systems (BCWS) Centre at Carleton University from 2005 to 2013. Professor Banihashemi is a registered Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario, Canada. He has been a two-time recipient of NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplement (DAS) in 2008 and 2013. Some of his other awards include Carleton's Research Achievement Award in 2006 and 2012, and the Faculty Graduate Mentoring Award in 2011. More recently, Professor Banihashemi was awarded the 2017 IEEE Ottawa Section Outstanding Engineer Award with citation: "for outstanding and pioneering contributions in theory and practice of error correction coding schemes and digital communications," and the Faculty of Engineering and Design (FED) Faculty Research Award in 2021.
Professor Banihashemi was a member of NSERC's Electrical and Computer Engineering Evaluation Group from 2013 to 2016, the last two years as a Section Chair.
