Swimmer Notes

Swimmer Updates:

 - Brad Shapansky (7:30am Earlybirds) recently had an unfortunate bike accident, but at least the Ottawa Citizen has published an article on the dangers of the expansion joint that Brad’s bicycle encountered: http://www.ottawacitizen.com/news/Roadway+ruts+create+death+trap/3189066/story.html.  Best wishes to Brad for a quick recovery, and thanks to Natalie Aucoin (6pm Whitecaps) for letting me know about the article.

 - Rod Haney (7:30am Earlybirds) reports that he has “re-retired” but unfortunately also come down with a nasty case of bronchitis which is why he’s missed the last couple of weeks.  As he’s taking the summer off, we’ll see him back in the pool in September.

 - Congratulations to Natalie Aucoin (6pm Whitecaps)’s daughter Brigitte Boland on qualifying for Junior Provincials (this weekend) by making the 400IM time standard at her last meet in Montreal.

Wendy Buckner Obituary:  Wendy was a swimmer and coach with Technosport Masters, Ottawa.  She died suddenly (age 50) following a one-mile open water swim race in the Cayman Islands, where she was visiting her brother, on Sat Jun 19th.  See also: http://www.legacy.com/can-ottawa/obituaries.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonID=143758553 and http://jennydavidson.blogspot.com/2010/06/in-loving-memory-of-wendy-buckner-1959.html.

FINA Swim Suit Rules for Masters:  While the swim suit rules for Masters are the same as for age group swimming (i.e. all textile material: men waist to knee; women shoulders to knee and no zippers), FINA has clarified that suits need not have a FINA approved label (that looks like a bar code): "It is clarified that swimsuits which fulfill the shape requirement set forth in BL 8.3, respectively BL 8.4 (for Open Water Swimming) can be accepted even if they do not bear a valid FINA approval label provided they effectively and evidently fulfill the material requirements set forth in the current FINA Requirements for Swimwear Approval. This is the case for swimsuits made of traditional permeable textile (i.e. open mesh material) material (such as cotton, Nylon, Lycra and the like) with no application of surface treatment closing the open mesh structure. In case of doubt in this respect and when notably such doubt concerns a swimsuit used at the occasion of a World record, an actual check of the swimsuit can be required from the competitor or Certifying Official and the swimsuit is to be forwarded to the FINA Office for submission to an actual control of all or parts of the requirements."

Swim Suits for Sale:  The suits range in brand, style, and colour.  Most women’s suits are $40 and under and most men’s suits are $25 and under.  The swim suits are available for browsing whenever Lynn is coaching – just ask!  A few new suits recently arrived, including a pair of Speedo 100% polyester men’s jammers waist 33” ($40).

Caps and Goggles to Borrow:  Lynn always has a “lost and found” bag full of spare caps and goggles to borrow if you forget (or break) yours.

50c Swim Caps:  The money raised selling these gently used caps for 50c will go towards the $45 annual fee to register Carleton Masters with Masters Swimming Ontario.  Just ask Lynn if you’re interested in looking at these.

Nose Clips for Sale:  Cost $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Spring Session Information

Thanks to all groups for being patient about the recent pool end and number of lanes changes due to the end of the ROCS program, the beginning of the summer Water Polo league, and the start of sports camp.

The time trials held in the Spring Session were:

400 Mon May 31st (all)

50 and 100 Tue Jun 8th / Wed Jun 9th (all)

800/1500 Mon Jun 14th (all)

200 Mon Jun 21st (all)

Relays Wed Jun 30th (Earlybirds)

Congratulations to all those who participated in the 200m time trials on Mon Jun 21st, especially those who improved.  The biggest improvements were all in 200 free – well done, Romy, Lois and Bill!!  Here’s a list of all the improvements:

Note that Natalie Aucoin (6pm Whitecaps) was just 0.8 slower than her best in 200 fly.  However, as she got to dive in for her last time but not this time (as we were in the shallow end), it “sort of” counts as an improvement!

Thanks to all those who participated in the relays.  The biggest improvements were by Margaret King (7:30am Earlybirds) who improved by 3.1 seconds in 50 free and Iyad Abbas (7:30am Earlybirds) who improved by 2.6 seconds in 50 back.  Margaret improved in both her 50s!  Here’s a list of all the relay improvements:

Andrew Buzzell (7:30am Earlybirds) 1.4

Well done by all who participated in the 800/1500 time trials on Mon Jun 14th.  It’s a mental challenge to swim fast for that long!  Five people improved by over 1 minute!  Romy Schaffenburg (6pm Whitecaps) and Jamie Chalmers (7:10pm Whitecaps) improved by 2:21 and 2:11, respectively, in the 800.  Kelly Meaney (6pm Whitecaps) improved by 3:25 in the 1500.  Lois Frankel (7:30am Earlybirds) improved by 1:22 in the 800, and Lynn Brodsky (6pm Whitecaps) improved by 1:49 in the 1500.  Wow!!  Here’s the full list of improvements:

Time Trial and Relay Summary:

The information below on most improved and fastest swimmers is taken from the time trials done during the Spring session, and includes the relay splits from the end of term relays.  Times done in competitions are not included.  If your times are not listed here and you're curious, just e-mail me for details.  (I have all time trial times since May 2001.)

There were 23 women and 13 men who improved in at least one event.  The most improved overall was Romy Schaffenburg (6pm Whitecaps) who improved her 800fs by 2:21 (17.6 sec/100m).  The second most improved and most improved male was again Jamie Chalmers (7:10pm Whitecaps) who improved his 800fs by 1:11 (16.4sec/100m).  Next were Kelly Meaney (6pm Whitecaps) who improved her 1500 by 3:25 (13.7/100m) and Lois Frankel (7:30am Earlybirds) who improved her 800fs by 1:22 (10.3/100m).  Rounding out the top 3 for the men were Iyad Abbas (7:30am Earlybirds) who improved his 50bk by 2.6 (5.2/100m) and Bill Westcott (6pm Whitecaps) who improved his 200fs by 9.1 (4.6/100m).  Carol Alexander (7:30am Earlybirds) improved in four different events, and Lynn Brodsky (6pm Whitecaps), Romy Shaffenburg (6pm Whitecaps), Margaret King (7:30am Earlybirds) and Jamie all improved in 3 events.

The International Point Scores (link to web page below) are used to determine the best swims.  There were 9 women and 8 men scoring 400 points or above in at least one event.  Hilary March (6pm Whitecaps) was again the fastest overall with 625 points for 30.0 in 50fs.  Ian McLean (6pm Whitecaps) was the fastest man with 565 points for 27.6 in 50fs.  Also scoring over 500 and second woman was Maureen Mahoney (7:10pm Whitecaps) with 529 for 2:33.1 in 200fs.  Nathan Fudge (6pm Whitecaps) was the second man with 499 for 30.8 in 50fl.  Don Wells (6pm Whitecaps) was the third man with 489 for 20:14 in 1500, and rounding out the top 3 for the women was Jane Imai (7:30am Earlybirds) with 477 for 33.4 in 50fs.  Maureen scored over 400 points in four events, and Don, Nathan, Hilary and Ian M all scored over 400 points in 3 events.

All those improving and all those scoring over 400 points, as well as the top 3 improvements and the top 3 times for each event are also listed below, as are the results of the relays.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  When we did short distance free recently, you said that we should stop after the fast part of our swim and get our time before doing the easy part.  Can you clarify why we should do that?  Pace Clock Challenged Swimmer

Dear P.C.C. Swimmer:  The only way you’ll know if you’re improving (or having a good / bad day) is by being aware of how fast you are swimming.  Thus, you should get to know what a good time is for you for the distances that you commonly swim.  In the workout you are referring to the distances were 25, 50, 75 and 100m free.  By calculating your time on the fast swims, you’ll be able to compare from workout to workout and from set to set how you are doing.

Dear Coach:  How can I go faster on short sprints?  Want to Swim Faster

Dear W.t.S. Faster:  When you are swimming short distances you really want the push-offs and turns to help you maintain your speed.  Thus ensure that you push off in a good streamlined position, under the water and accelerate to the surface.  Don’t breathe on the first stroke (or two) and don’t breathe in the last 5m of your swim.  (Breathing slows you down!)

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: Are you interested in getting copies of Lynn's workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out two week’s worth of workouts on alternate Sundays.  (Note that these are only the workouts that Lynn coaches.  If Lynn is not your coach, the workouts sent by e-mail will be different from the workouts your coach gives you!)
