Notes and Cancellations
If anyone is
planning to swim in the Ontario Provincials at the Nepean Sportsplex (Mar
25-27th) and has not yet registered
with MSO, we need to get that done within the next week. It takes a few
weeks to process your application and the entry deadline is Mar
4th. If you need to get registered, talk to (or e-mail) Lynn
ASAP!
A Big Birthday Thank
You!
Many thanks to
everyone for making my 50th birthday “week” a lot of fun and less
traumatic than expected!
On
Monday morning, the 8:30am Earlybirds got together after workout for a
cake. Thanks to Colette
Kenney for getting us
all organized. A very big thank you to
Natalie
Aucoin for bringing
in her amazing Chocolate Toffee Cheesecake despite being ill with
tonsillitis! It was wonderful!
Penny
Estabrooks designed and
made a wonderful card of water droplets containing Provincial, National, and
World Records “falling”, and Lucie
Boudreau brought in
very pretty reusable blue and green bowls and forks. Thanks to all the
8:30am Earlybirds who attended, those mentioned above, plus:
Amir, Isabelle, Margaret DK, Norine,
Paul, Renee, Shauna, Susan H, and Susan
N-Y.
Apologies to anyone I missed – memory starts to go at
50!
On
Wednesday morning, Margaret Dibben
King (8:30am
Earlybirds) organized a presentation of a giant “go for the gold” bow and
chocolates.
On
Thursday morning, Sean
Kelly (Earlybirds)
delivered a parcel from George
Tombler (x-Whitecaps)
of Toblerone chocolates modified to say specially made “Tombler”
chocolates!
On
Thursday evening, Mits
Kachi (Coach)
brought in a huge number of cookies and a cake – wow! The evening group
ate most of the cookies, and ROCS and the Earlybirds finished off the cookies
and the cake on Friday morning.
After Thursday’s 6pm Whitecaps, a group of 14 headed to the Lone Star on
Baseline, so that Lynn could wear a silly hat and stand on a chair (life isn’t
complete until you have done this!), see the bottom photo (courtesy of Jose) at:
http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/11photo/. Thanks to
Debby Whately and Jose Vivanco for organizing the outing, and
to Debby for paying for my dinner. A very big thank you to Mike Lau who brought a huge cake for us all
to share. Other 6pm Whitecaps attending were: Elaine Y, Eric, Jackie, Mits, Nicole, Zi,
and Zivi. It was
also great to see Randy Peskett,
Debby’s husband, plus Mark Hinds
and Steve Morton (both
x-Whitecaps).
Thanks also to Debby
and Jamie Chalmers (7:10pm
Whitecaps) for their birthday cards!
I think it will take me
(another) half-century to recover from all the excitement!

Updates:
- Mati
Sauks (x-Whitecaps) is celebrating his
60th birthday 4pm-2am Sat Mar 5th at Tail Gators (upstairs
in the Merivale Mall, where Le Scratch was). All welcome! Please
RSVP to Mati at: mati.sauks@rogers.com so he knows how
many snacks to order!
- Sean
Kelly (Earlybirds) got an infection in the
bone after his wrist surgery in December. He’s still getting IV
antibiotics but is doing a little swimming on his own when it’s not crowded so
he doesn’t have to worry about anyone hitting his wrist. We hope to see
him back training with the group later this month!

Ask the Coach
Dear
Coach: For those too young to
remember the “Man from Atlantis” TV show, a link to a YouTube video would be a
good idea. Mark Blenkinsop
(8:30am Earlybirds)
Dear Mark: Thanks for the
great idea. Here’s a link to the Man from Atlantis Introduction: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ajo86iDrNYQ&feature=related.
Dear
Coach: This is a comment rather than a
question. There is a web page on the Masters Swimming Canada website; i.e., http://mymsc.ca/Article.jsp?id=123
. In it Michael Gorman points out that our coach knows us very well. Sometimes
she or he will ask us to do something that Michael Phelps is not doing. Mr.
Gorman's advice is to do what we have been asked as there is probably a very
good reason for the advice.
He also says what we as students,
can do to ease the task of our coaches during our training sessions. It is
basically etiquette for the swim class.
Perhaps you can pass it
on the other students to read.
Note, my recommending this is not
an implicit complaint to my co-swimmers. It is something I have noticed about
myself; nevertheless, I thought that others may also learn from
it.
Not a Perfect Swimmer (NaPS)
Dear NaPS: Thanks for sending
the link!
Dear
Coach: The amount of hot water,
especially in the mornings, has been fluctuating a lot recently. Is
something being done? Cold Swimmer
Dear C. Swimmer: Physical
Plant has been working on the hot water issue for a while. The latest
suspect is a steam problem and a “Master” plumber is looking into the
matter. With any luck a solution will be found
shortly.
