Updates:
-
Thanks to Colette Kenney (7:30am Earlybirds) for taking photos of Margaret
Dibben King (8:30am Earlybirds)’s 80th birthday. You can
find one of them at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/11photo.
Margaret even wrote a little poem for the occasion: “swim, swim together @
Carleton we swim to our Goals; sculling, diving and gliding together we reach
80 years young”. Thanks, Margaret!
-
Congratulations to Lois Frankel (7:30am Earlybirds) on the birth of her
first grandchild on Aug 16th! His name is Azrael Krannich and
he weighed 7 pounds 14 ounces.
-
Meredith Curren (7:30am Earlybirds), who has taken the Summer off from
Masters to kayak with the Rideau Canoe Club, sent an update on her
kayaking. She is training 5-6 days per week and has seen huge
improvements (20sec over 500m, which takes about 2.5min)! She
bought a new more competitive kayak, but it is tippier so it has been a
challenge. Meredith is participating in the Canadian Masters (CANMAS)
Sprint Kayak/Canoe Championships in Welland on Aug 28th, where the
Rideau Canoe Club hopes to capture the “team burgee” for top overall
team. Good luck, Meredith!
-
Thanks to Joanie Conrad (8:10pm Whitecaps) for passing on these great
photos of the infinity pool on the Skypark of the Marina Bay Sands resort in
Singapore (oops – forgot the link last time!): http://banella.com/marina-bay-sands-skypark-infinity-pool/.

Sat Sept 10th to raise funds for cancer research at the Ottawa
Hospital. Full details on the event at: http://www.ridetherideau.ca/.

Articles and Links:
- Thanks to Larry Durr
(7:30am Earlybirds) for this article on how “little” Phelps has been training: “Before the 2007 world championships, where Phelps won all five of his
individual events -- most by body lengths over the second-place finishers -- he
was swimming up to 80,000 meters (49.7 miles) a week in training. This past year
that weekly total has been closer to 30,000 meters (18.6 miles), Bowman says,
although it reached 65,000 meters (40.4 miles) at a high-altitude training camp
in May in Colorado Springs.” (http://www.usatoday.com/NEWS/usaedition/2011-07-22-1A-cover-Michael-Phelps_CV_U.htm)

Masters
Swimming Competitions
You
must
register annually with Masters Swimming Ontario (MSO) if you want to
compete in Masters Swimming competitions. Registration for 2011 is still
available. (Registration for 2012 will start in the Fall.) Cost is
$36 ($35 fee + $1 postage/handling). Please pay by cash or cheque payable
to “Lynn Marshall”. Your MSO membership will be good until Dec 31st,
2011. Contact Lynn for more details. Note that you must register
with MSO at least 3
weeks before the due date of the entry for your first
competition. For those who like to plan ahead, the MSO fees will remain
the same for next year (2011-2012), but will very likely increase by at least
$5 the following year, due to additional fees being requested by Masters
Swimming Canada (MSC) for each MSO swimmer.
Full
details on all Ontario Masters competitions can be found at: http://www.mastersswimmingontario.ca/competition/schedule01.htm.
For Quebec competitions see: https://www.swimming.ca/MeetInfo.aspx,
select FNQ <show>, upcoming meets, then the appropriate month, then
select the appropriate Masters meet to get more info. If it says
“sanctioned” the meet package should be available.
Here’s a list of tentative and confirmed upcoming nearby competitions (mostly)
in Ontario and Quebec. More meets and more details will be added as the
information become available. Note that meet entries and confirming meet
information and entry dates are your responsibility.

Ask the
Coach
Dear
Coach: What’s
the difference between build and descend? Still Learning the Terminology
Dear
S.L.t. Terminology: Normally we use “build” to mean speeding up within a
repeat, i.e. one swim where you start moderate and gradually increase the
effort level so that you finish fast. “Descend” is used for a series of
repeats, all of the same length, where each one should be faster than the
previous one. Sometimes we will say to “build” through a set. This
is used when the repeats are different lengths, and each repeat is done at a
higher effort level.
Dear
Coach:
And what about build vs. fade? Let Me Get This All Straight!
Dear
L.M.G.T.A. Straight: Fade is the opposite of build – you are starting fast and
gradually slowing down, either within a repeat or through a set. (And,
ascend is the opposite of descend – each repeat slower than the previous one.)

Newsletter: An e-newsletter
(like this one) is sent out about every two weeks. If you have new
lane-mates, please mention to them that they should give their e-mail address
to their coach if they'd like to receive it.
Suggestions for Workouts
or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have
suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something
you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout
or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.
Interested in Copies of
the Workouts?: Are you interested in getting copies of Lynn's
workouts ahead of time? Let me know. I usually e-mail out two
week’s worth of workouts at a time. (Note that these are only the
workouts that Lynn coaches. If Lynn is not your coach, the workouts sent
by e-mail will be different from the workouts your coach gives you!)

(6pm Whitecaps), is http://www.slowtwitch.com/.
