Swimmer Notes

Swimmer Updates:

- Colette Kenney (8:30am Earlybirds) passed her grading for her Taekwondo 3rd Dan (3rd level black belt) on Thu Nov 3rd.  Congratulations, Colette – what an awesome achievement!!

- Awesome job by everyone at the 6pm Tue Nov 8th and 7:30am and 8:30am Wed Nov 9th groups on the challenging pace time freestyle set.  While many of you surprised yourself with the fast times you were able to swim and the faster than usual pace times that you were able to hold, I wanted to acknowledge the 8:30am “fast” lane for doing the toughest pace times done in a Carleton Masters workout in recent memory, and perhaps ever:  Sean Dawson, Mark Blenkinsop, and Tony Revitt did 2 x ( 1x100fs, 100ez@2:00, 2x100fs, 100ez@2:00, 3x100fs, 100ez@2:00 ) with the 100s free on 1:20 the first time, and 1:15 the second time.  And then they did one more 100fs on 1:10 – and they all made the whole set!!  Woo-hoo!

- Heather Ireland (8:30am Earlybirds) had a good reason for missing the 50 time trials on Wed Oct 26th as she was becoming a Canadian Citizen.  Congratulations, Heather!

- Sinisa Catic (7:30am Earlybirds) hasn’t been swimming lately as he was very busy preparing for his Oct 26th seminar at University of Waterloo on “ALGOL MMXI Universal Programming Language”:

http://www.cs.uwaterloo.ca/odyssey/event/1381.  We hope to see him back in the pool soon!

- The bag of caps for sale is getting quite depleted.  If anyone (triathletes?) has any spare latex caps that they don’t need, I’d be happy to take them off your hands.  (We sell them for 50c, with profits going towards the club MSO registration fee.)

- Date for your diary: The Masters Holiday Potluck Party is scheduled for the evening of Sat Dec 10th at the home of Don Wells (6pm Whitecaps) and Joanie Conrad (7:10pm Whitecaps).  All Masters swimmers and their families are invited.  This is always a great feed and a chance to see you lane-mates fully dressed!  More details to follow.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  People keep asking you the same questions year after year, so I’ve put together a Frequently Asked Questions list (FAQ) for the web site.  Steve Morton (x-Whitecaps)

Dear Steve: Thanks very much!  It’s posted at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/swim_faq.html.  However, I don’t mind answering the same questions each year, as a review of the basics is good for all of us!

Dear Coach:  As Masters swimmers are permitted to use a breaststroke kick in butterfly (unlike age group swimmers), can we also do breaststroke kick on the turns?  Curious Swimmer

Dear C. Swimmer:  I wasn’t sure on this one, so I contacted Pat Niblett (Technosport and Masters Official), who pointed me to this rule:

   “Rule MSW 8.3

All up and down movements of the legs must be simultaneous.  The legs or the feet need not be on the same level, but they shall not alternate in relation to each other.  A breaststroke kick is permitted for butterfly.  Only one breaststroke kick is permitted per arm pull except that a single breaststroke kick is permitted prior to the turn and the finish without an arm pull.  After the start and after each turn a single breaststroke kick is permitted prior to the first arm pull.”

Note that you can do as many dolphin kicks per stroke as you like (i.e. it’s perfectly legal to do dolphin kick without moving your arms at all for an entire fly race), but only one breaststroke kick, so the same rule applies to the turn.  Note also that the usual fly turn rule applies in that you cannot stay underwater for more than 15m off each wall.

Dear Coach:  Last week’s focus was “efficient kick”.  What is an efficient kick?  Improving Swimmer

Dear I. Swimmer:  For fly, back and free, you want to keep your legs in or close to the “shadow” of your body (i.e. your feet should stay mostly in the water that your body is displacing).  You should also kick with pointed / pigeon toes, and avoid any “stair climbing” type motion.  For breast, it’s the same idea except that the legs do go outside the body.  You want to have only a small amount of bend at the hips to avoid “stair climbing”.  When gliding, point the toes and raise the legs towards the surface to decrease drag.

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: Are you interested in getting copies of Lynn's workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out two week’s worth of workouts at a time.  (Note that these are only the workouts that Lynn coaches.  If Lynn is not your coach, the workouts sent by e-mail will be different from the workouts your coach gives you!)

Triathletes: Check out Rudy Hollywood’s website: http://www.trirudy.com and subscribe to the daily tri-news e-mail.  Another good resource is http://www.slowtwitch.com/.  Lots of free triathlon advice, a training log and challenges like the 100 runs in 100 days!
