Abstract
This paper shows the development of a simulation based prototype system to facilitate the design of protection schemes for a new shipboard power system (SPS). The paper shows that by building on an existing state-of-the-art simulation package for power systems, a prototype system can be developed. This system can then be used to investigate the protection issues on the new system and develop new schemes. The use of existing models facilitates the development of the prototype, but incorporating new models into the program becomes the main issue. The paper shows that nevertheless this approach provides a very cost effective means of conducting initial feasibility analysis and determining prototype designs for a new system before actually building/developing the actual component or subsystem.
