Q. How often should I save my work?
That depends on how lucky you feel. We recommend that you save/resave your work every 5-10 minutes.
Q. How many accounts will I have this year?
Just one account for Windows,DOS and Linux. Your
account will have the same username as your Carleton student
account (cmail). This assumes that you have already gone through the account
setup process as described in the Account Activation web page.
Q. I have a course that uses Linux, what account do I use to login?
You use your LABS domain account for Linux , Windows
and 4th year projects. This account has the same username as your
Carleton student user account (cmail). This assumes that you have all ready
gone through the account setup process as described in the Account
Activation web page.
Q. I'm a new student in the SYSC dept. and I went through the
account Activation web page and setup my LABS domain account login. But,
when I try to login to Linux, my login/password is not working. What is
wrong???
If you have just received a new LABS domain account
and you are attempting your very first login, you must login to a
Windows environment to finalize the setup of your windows account and
directories on the server.
Q. Can I install/save applications software or save mp3/video files in my home directory?
Unless the file/data directly pertains to the course/s you are taking, No. Any unautorized applications, software,
music, video files stored in your home directories will be
removed without any notice!!! Disk storage space is at a premium and
should be used for course work only.
Q. Why don't the backspace and arrow keys work in the Borland C++ editor?
It's the result of a configuration problem. Before
proceeding to the solution, shutdown Borland C++ if you have the
program open. All users have a drive "P:" mapped at login time. This
drive (P:) contains a directory called " BC5 " which contains the
proper configuration files. Please copy this directory to your M:
drive. Note if your M: drive has an existing BC5 directory, please
rename this directory before copying the BC5 directory from the P:
drive. (DO NOT COPY "BC5" from the C: drive to your M: drive.)
Q. Do I get a new account every semester? Next year?
No and No. You will use the same account each
semester/year as long as you are registered in a currently running SYSC
course. Your password will remain the same as you left it between Fall
and Winter terms. Your passwords will be reset for the Summer and Fall
terms.
Q. How do I change my password in DOS?
Login at the DOS prompt, then type 'net password'.
(NOTE: Your very first login MUST be into Windows where you will be
prompted to change your password.)
Q. How do I change my password in Windows?
Login, then press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and then click Change Password.
Q. Do passwords have restrictions?
Yes, Minimum number of characters is 6 and a history
of passwords is kept. That means don't use the same password over
again. This rule is in place for your protection.
Q. I registered late or I can't find my account/login or create my account. How can I fix this?
Please Email service@sce.carleton.ca. Please do not
expect immediate responses, we will get back to you as soon as
possible. This means Do Not wait until your assignment is due to find
out whether you have an account or not. In the case that you are unable to create an account please have your Proffessor contact service to manually generate your account. You will need to include your first and last name, your carleton user i.d. (cmail account user i.d.) and student number. Having a valid working account
is your responsibility.
Q. How much storage space do I, as a user, have on the server (drive M:)?
The amount of storage space each student is entitled to is 500 meg.
Q. How often are my files backed up?
No backups of your data are done. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN BACKUPS !!!!

Q. I lost the connection to my M: drive! Can I save files
anywhere on the C: drive and, will they still be there if I logout and
then login again?
No. Please save your work to your USB drive. Make
sure to save your work regularly. In the event that you are unable to
save and you absolutly need your data come to the tech office at ME4224
and one of the technical support staff will be happy to assist you.
Technical support hours are from 8:30am to 12:00pm and 1:00pm to 4:30pm
monday to friday. Remember. Save regularly.
Q. How do I get a 4th year project account?
If you're registered in a 4th year project course,
e.g. 4905 - 4907 - 4908 - 4909, your LABS domain account will have
access to 4th year project resources.
