WOSP Objectives

Software performance engineering (SPE) research aims to build predictable performance into systems by specifying and analyzing quantitative behavior from the very beginning of a system, through to its deployment and evolution. Designers must consider performance requirements, the design, and the environment in which the system will run. Analysis may be based on various kinds of modelling and design tools.

This workshop brings together software engineers, developers, performance analysts and modellers. They are creating  new tools and methods to address the challenges of increasing system complexity, rapidly evolving software technologies, short time to market, incomplete documentation, and poorly defined requirements. The first workshop (WOSP'98) held in  in Santa Fe, NM, was highly successful and identified many gaps in the available practices and tools.

Some sample topics that have a place in this workshop are:

SPE Process and Practices
Defining and managing performance goals and requirements
Risk assessment (when to analyze, value)
    Performance budgeting for development groups
    System and software architectural assessment
    Performance-oriented Design/Implementation
    Performance annotation of software specifications
    Experience with performance engineering

Modeling Tools and Techniques
Performance evaluation methods, tools, and frameworks
    Gathering and exploiting data
    Automated model building
    Model and data interchange formats

Performance Measurement, Modeling, and Management for Software Systems
    Test methods and tools
Measurement and monitoring techniques and services
Analysis of measured data; application Quality of Service
    Performance modeling of software applications
    Perfomance modeling of software architectures
Performance modeling of software analysis and design models

Travel

Ottawa has direct flights from Chicago, Boston, Newark, Washington and other points, as well as Toronto. From Europe, there are direct flights (not every day) from London by Canadian/BA and by Air Canada. Here is a City web site with lots of information!
