International Travels by Carleton Masters Swimmers
Over the past month, Carleton swimmers have competed in various competitions all over the world!  Corry Burke (High Intensity) competed in Ironman Florida (Panama City Beach, USA) on Sun Nov 7th.  Colette Kenney (8:30am Earlybirds) competed in the Dublin (Ireland) Marathon on Mon Oct 25th.  Mike Stashin (7:30am Earlybirds) competed in the Forster (Australia) Half Ironman on Sun Oct 31st, and Debby Whately (Whitecaps "A") competed in the World Dragon Boat Championships in Shanghai (China) Wed Oct 20-Sun Oct 24th!

Corry finished 810th in 11:43:58 and, although happy to finish, was somewhat disappointed in his time.  See his race report below.  Colette ran the marathon with her sister-in-law at a much slower pace than she's capable of (6656th in 5:13:15), but helped her sister-in-law make it through and commented on how different things are nearer the "back of the pack".  Mike's training was seriously set back by a sprained ankle not long before his race, and despite a slow day (864th in 6:25:29.4), he was very happy with his swim time.  See Mike's race summary below.  Debby's Canadian Senior (40+) women's team won silver medals in the 200m and 500m races (behind China) and won the exhibition 1000m race!  In addition, her mixed "B" team finished 4th, just missing out on a medal.

Sun Nov 14th Kingston Masters Meet
Fiver Carleton swimmers participated: Mits (High Intensity / Coach), Jose (Whitecaps "A"), George (Whitecaps "B"), Esther (8:30am Earlybirds), Bozena (Whitecaps "B").  Results next time.

Mike's Forster Half Ironman Summary:
This summer I starting participating in triathlons for the first time with the goal to complete a half ironman by its end.  This was the reason for joining the masters class in june, to prepare for the 1.9km swim.  Recent injuries kept me from attending the event I was originally training for (Montreal Demi Esprit in September).  However, I was fortunate enough to complete a Half Ironman in Forster Australia [on October 31st]. A tough bike leg and the loss of a lot of running training due to a recent sprain made it a slow day.  However, my swim went extremely well compared to previous triathlon swims.

Corry's Ironman Florida Race Report (from TriRudy):
Never Again.
Well, we'll see, but right now, I don't feel like ever doing that again. What a weird, surreal event the Ironman is. From the trip, to the leadup, to the race, to the day after...downright surreal. You feel like you're floating around in someone else's life, someone else's body. I don't know how you people do those things year after year.
I'd give a race summary, but my time's tell it all, especially for anyone who knows me, or trained with me this summer. My swim was a disappointing 1:01 and change, my bike was a pleasantly surprising 5:39 and change, and my run (and I use the term loosely) was an eye-opening 4:48 and change. I have always fancied myself a decent runner. I know that when I get off the bike, I never turn in a blazing time, but I have never been as slow as I was in Florida. I had always thought that come hell or high water I was always going to at least be able to do 6 minute km's. I figured that was akin to 2 minute hundreds, something I can do doing relaxed double-armed backstroke. Well, I was wrong.
I had spent a chunk of my training efforts this summer on improving my riding. I did this for 2 reasons. First, because I suck on a bike, and second, because I thought that it would go a long way to improving the way I felt going into my run. Well....I'm happy to see that my riding improved, anyway....When I headed out on the bike course in Florida, I had forgotten to reset my computer, and I was already about 10-15 minutes in before I looked down to check my speed. It was at that point that I realized my mistake, but it just meant that I wouldn't know exactly how far to the finish. It didn't bother me much because the course was marked well, so I didn't think too much of it. But it also didn't allow me to know how long I had been out on the bike for, so, when I came out of T2 (after a leisurely 8 minutes), I took a look back at the clock and saw a time in the 6:50 territory. I was very pleased as I headed out, thinking, "Wow, I have a good shot at going sub-11. All I have to do is a 4 hour marathon."...All I have to do is a 4 hour marathon...It's amazing how easily those words still come out of me. Suffice to say, 4 hours may be in my grasp someday, but not on that day. Luckily, I met up with a great guy, Tom Sturm from Nashville, around mile 3 or 4. He paced me the rest of the afternoon and early evening, supplying me with a few extra electrolyte pills he had, and offering words of encouragement when I needed them. If it hadn't been for him with me that night, I don't know how things would have turned out. I am much in his debt.
Anyway, lessons learned? My buddy Andrew rode me all spring, summer, and fall about my bad consumption during training. I never consumed enough for him. I now know this to be true. On race day, I didn't each much before going down to the race site, but once there, I ate a half a Power Bar and drank a half a litre of 50/50 gatorade/water, before going into the water. Once out of the water, I ate a Power Gel while running with my bike, then on the bike I drank 6 bottles of Gatorade (all provided out on the course, I only rode out with one bottle of 50/50 Gatorade/water), ate 4 or 5 bananas, another 4 Power Gels, 6 salt capsules, and a half a bottle of water. On the run, I ate so much and drank so much that I can't even begin to count. I had another 8 or 9 salt tablets, 3 or 4 Power Gels, enough coke, Gatorade, water, chicken broth, and anything else anyone would hand to me, to sink a boat. I also ate every oatmeal cookie, pretzel, banana, orange, etc., that they had. I got my money's worth, to say the least. All of that food and drink consumed, and I didn't go to the bathroom during the entire race, nor did I feel the need to. I can't even imagine what state I would have been in if I hadn't consumed like that. Everyone is different, granted, but be prepared to eat and drink like crazy.
And my other lesson? Try running once in a while during training, that would help, or it would be a start, anyway.
All that to say, good race, incredibly well organized. I enjoyed every minute of the experience (except the 5000 km of driving). Thanks to all who made it happen for me, you know who you are.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  I'd like to attend only the occasional Saturday morning workout.  Is there a drop-in fee offered?  Part-time Swimmer

Dear P.-t. Swimmer:  As the Carleton Masters is run as a program of Carleton University Athletics, not as an independent club, all Carleton Masters must have Athletics memberships and register for one of the Masters programs.  Drop in fees are not offered due both to the high demand for the programs (most workouts are already very busy) and due to the administrative hassles it would cause.

Dear Coach:  I read something recently about "feel for the water".  What does that mean?  Curious

Dear Curious: An important skill in improving your swimming is to learn the best way to move your hand through the water (to minimize drag and maximize force/lift).  Many of the drills we do, especially sculling, help us to learn this skill.  Those who are able to pick up this skill are continually adjusting the angle of their hands as they swim and are said to have a good "feel for the water".

Dear Coach:  When does the Fall term end?  Planning Ahead

Dear P. Ahead: The Fall term ends on Sat Dec 18th, except for High Intensity Group 1 (MWF am) who finish on Fri Dec 17th and High Intensity Group 2 (Tu/Th am) who finish on Thu Dec 16th.  Note that there will be some interim swims offered at a cost of $3 per workout.  Details will be announced shortly.

Dear Coach:  When does the Winter term start?  Another Planner

Dear A. Planner:  The Winter term starts on Mon Jan 3rd for Earlybirds and Whitecaps.  It starts on Tue Jan 4th for Nightcaps.  It starts on Wed Jan 5th for High Intensity Group 1 (MWF am) and 3 (MWSa pm), and on Thu Jan 6th for High Intensity Group 2 (Tu/Th am).

Dear Coach:  I thought I'd already signed up for Masters for the whole year.  Why are you asking everyone to register for the Winter term?  Year-Round Swimmer

Dear Y-R. Swimmer:  Many swimmers purchased a 1-year Athletics membership in September.  However, unless you signed up for High Intensity (in which case you are paid up until mid-February), your regular Masters registration was only for the Fall term.  Registration for the regular Masters groups for the Winter term is not available until Mon Nov 22nd, so no one has yet registered for those programs.
