Carleton Masters Christmas Party: Sat Dec 11th
Many thanks to Don Wells and Joanie Conrad (Whitecaps "A"), and Sam and Ben (Safety Supervision) who have once again agreed to host the Masters Christmas Potluck Party at 376 Hamilton Ave South!  Members of all Masters and High Intensity groups are invited.  The potluck and BYOB party will start at 6pm on Sat Dec 11th.  You and your family are welcome to attend all or part of the evening, as your social calendar permits!  If you will be arriving late, please choose a dish as per the following approximate schedule: appetizers 6:00-7:30pm, dinner 7:30-9:00pm, dessert 9:00-10:00pm.  Non-alcoholic "KnockOut Punch" and apple cider will be provided for designated drivers and underage guests.  Full details and map can be found at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/christmas04.pdf, and will be posted on the Masters bulletin board at the pool.

Winter Program Registration
Registration for Winter Masters Programs has started.  Everybody, except those registered in High Intensity (which runs until February), must register for the Winter term if they plan to continue swimming in January 2005.  Those currently registered in programs that are full (7:30am Earlybirds, 6pm Whitecaps, Safety Supervision) are strongly encouraged to register early to avoid disappointment!

Note that the 6:30am Earlybirds will be starting up towards the end of February.  If you want to swim in one Masters group for Jan/Feb and then switch to the 6:30am Earlybirds when it starts, please contact the office (phone number and hours are below).  If you switch from 7:30am Earlybirds, 8:30am Earlybirds or Whitecaps, you pay the regular Jan-Apr free plus an additional charge of $10+GST (the normal program transfer fee).  If you switch from Nightcaps, you pay the regular Nightcaps fee plus an additional charge of $30+GST (this includes the program transfer fee, plus the extra cost of moving from a group offering 3 workouts per week to one offering 4 workouts per week).

Details on the Masters programs offered are given both on our web site: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com and on the Athletics web site at: http://www.carleton.ca/athletics/programs/aquatics/b_aquafit.html (bottom of page).  You will be able to register on-line by following the links from: http://www.carleton.ca/athletics/, or you can drop by or call (520-4480) the 2nd floor Athletics office during business hours: 8:30am-4:30pm M-F.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Others may be interested in this information I received from Paul Armstrong on the hair dryers in the women's change room.  A Wet-Haired Swimmer

Extract from e-mail dated Nov 8th:
We have ordered new units to replace the ones installed as part of the renovation and this should be done within the next week to ten days.  The current units keep tripping the circuit breaker and we feel they are not 'industrial' enough for the usage they receive.  We have received requests, like yours, to put back some wall units (like the old orange ones) and we will review this situation.  However, we have no resources in our budget for this fiscal year to add wall mounted units.

Dear Coach:  I want to swim in some swim meets in 2005.  Should I contact MSO directly to register?  A Racer

Dear A. Racer:  Please do your MSO registration through me.  If you contact MSO directly, the registrar contacts me to confirm that you are indeed a Carleton swimmer, so you just add an extra step to the process!  Please submit $26 (cash or cheque payable to "Carleton Masters Swim Club") along with your full name, address, phone number and date of birth.

Dear Coach:  I plan to swim with the 7:30am Masters in January, but I want to move to the 6:30am Masters when that starts on Feb 23rd.  Is that possible and how do I register for that?  Very Earlybird

Dear V. Earlybird:  As there are several swimmers who have expressed interest in this, the office has set up a special list of those wanting to transfer.  Instead of registering on-line, you must call or drop by the office (520-4480, 2nd floor 8:30am-4:30pm M-F) and let them know which group you want to swim with in Jan/Feb before switching to the Very Earlybirds.  You will be charged the appropriate fee, plus a $10 transfer fee (see details near the top of the newsletter under Winter Program Registration.  Again, please register early to avoid disappointment!

Dear Coach:  Can you remind swimmers of the proper etiquette when they are stopped at the end of the pool?  Learning Flip-Turns

Dear L. Flip-Turns:  Certainly!  Remember that when you are stopped it is your responsibility to keep out of the way of those who are swimming.  Ensure that you move right up next to the lane rope to leave the "cross" on the wall free for those who are turning.

Dear Coach:  I received an e-mail from Athletics reminding me that it was time to renew my Pilates registration if I wanted to continue in the Winter term.  The only program I'm registered in is the Masters swim, so what's up with that?  Confused Swimmer

Dear C. Swimmer:  Apparently some of the e-mails sent out listed the wrong class for some unknown reason.  Just ignore the Pilates reminder, but please do register for Winter Masters!
