Swimmer Notes

Birth Announcement:  Jeffrey and Julie F (both x-7:30am Earlybirds) are proud to announce the birth of their son, Laurent Alex Furry.  Laurent entered the world via c-section after 27 hours of labour on January 27 at 8:18 a.m.  Laurent weighed in at a healthy 8lbs 3oz.  Both Mom and Baby are doing extremely well and resting as much as possible.
Photos are available online.

Tourette Syndrome:  Have you heard the bark of the new member in Whitecaps "B"?  Don't worry he
doesn't bite.  François P has Tourette Syndrome (TS).  It is a disorder that causes involuntary/uncontrollable facial, vocal and body movements.  These movements are referred to as tics.  Tics can be both vocal and motor. If you're around him when he tics, please don't be startled.  It's not an action directed to or against you -- it's simply him. If you have any questions regarding TS, please feel free to ask François or consult the web site at: http://www.tourette.ca.

Swimmer in the News:  Congratulations to Charles M (7:30am Earlybirds) on being selected as the comportment expert in the Jan 22nd Citizen article "From Geek to Chic", the Citizen's answer to "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy".  Thanks to Sean (High Intensity) for bringing this to my attention.  The article is available on-line in three parts: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/050122cit1.jpg, http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/050122cit2.jpg and http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/050122cit3.jpg

Adult Coed Recreational Waterpolo:  The Adult Coed Recreational program winter session starts Sunday Feb 6th  at Ottawa U.  Check out all the details at http://www.titanswaterpolo.ca under Programs -> Adult Recreational. This program is primarily targeted at adults (women and men, age 17+) with no competitive water polo experience but will attempt to accommodate more experienced players as well if possible. There are usually about equal numbers of men and women ranging in age from 18 to 50. If you are reading this after Feb 6th then check the website and contact the coordinator to see if there is still room. Some sessions are Sunday 7:15-9:00pm and some are Sunday 8:15-10:00pm.

Lane Etiquette:  Just a reminder that it's very important to give your lane-mates space to continue swimming, even if you're taking a break or stopping early.  Thus pay extra attention that you're keeping out of their way during warm up and warm down.  Also, ensure that there is room in the middle of your lane to pass / be passed.  Thanks!

Death of Yvon DesRochers:  The organizer of the FINA World Championships which were to be held in Montreal died recently, an apparent suicide.  News articles can be found at: http://arena.tsn.ca/news_story.asp?ID=113565 and http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,12135744-23218,00.html.

Carleton Swim Suits:  Some polyester TYR Carleton suits are still available.  Men's suits are $24.50 and women's are $47.  They will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis, so let me know if you are interested, along with your suit size.  Here's what's left: women's: 28, 30, 34, 36; men's 30, 32, 38.

Nose Clips for Sale:  Cost $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Heartwood House Fundraiser:  Nightcaps coach Louise will shortly be selling tickets to Heartwood House's annual fundraising concert featuring the Barra MacNeils and the Sue Fay Healy Irish Dancers which will be held at Centrepointe Theatre on Thursday March 17, 2005 at 7:30pm.  Tickets are $40 and the seats being sold are the best in the House.  Heartwood House, located at 153 Chapel street houses various non-profit organizations, including Frontier College (a literacy organization, where Louise works).  Anyone interested in tickets (they make great Christmas gifts!) can e-mail her at lfhayes5@yahoo.com or talk to her on deck.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  It's been next to impossible to find a locker in the women's change room at 6pm.  Can something be done?  Nowhere to Leave my Belongings

Dear N.t.L.m. Belongings:  I believe that the Tuck Shop has started cutting of unauthorized locks daily (rather than weekly), which is helping.  Also, with the opening of the new facility on Feb 8th, some of the Varsity teams will be moving, which should free up some locker space.

Dear Coach:  I'm sure there is some rhyme and reason behind the direction that the lanes swim during Masters, but I can't figure it out!  Stumped

Dear Stumped:  The lanes alternate direction so that if you hit arms with someone in the next lane, it hurts less as you are both going the same direction.  To figure out what direction your lane should go, remember that the lane next to the diving well needs to go counter clockwise so that swimmers won't hit their heads on the corner by the diving well.  Lanes in the shallow end go the same direction as those opposite them in the deep end.

Dear Coach:  Where can I get special soap for rinsing my suit to remove the chlorine.  Want my Suit to Last Longer

Dear W.m.S.t.L. Longer:  I believe that Aquasport in Montreal (http://www.aquasport.ca)  carries such a product.  Do any readers have other suggestions?

Dear Coach:  Is there any agreement on exactly what the best form of lane etiquette is?  Newbie

Dear Newbie:  Every swimmer likely has a slightly different version of good lane etiquette, but most of it is common sense and courtesy.  Here are some web versions for you to look at:

Dear Coach:  Any idea what happened to the clock that used to be near the sauna in the women's change room before the renovations?  It was handy!  Running Late

Dear R. Late:  I've asked if the clock can be replaced.  If the old one can be found, it will be put up again.  However, this isn't considered a high priority item!

Dear Coach:  I develop cold-like symptoms, especially sneezing, after workout.  Any suggestions?  Sniffly Swimmer

Dear S. Swimmer:  A nose clip will likely do wonders!  (I have some for sale at $5 each.)

Dear Coach:  What's the rule for a backstroke turn?  New Backstroker

Dear N. Backstroker:  When you are doing a back to back turn (i.e. backstroke both before and after the turn), you may do a flip turn.  If you choose to do a flip turn, you are permitted one stroke on your stomach that must be part of a continuous motion into the turn (i.e. you cannot stop and glide/kick on your stomach).  If you do not do a flip turn, you must touch the wall on your back with some part of your body (hand is recommended, but head is legal!) before starting the turn.  During the turn, you do not need to be on your back, but you must be on your back when you push off the wall.  "On your back" is anything up to 89 degrees towards either side, but you can't go past 90 degrees.  If you are turning from back to breast (in and IM), you must do a backstroke finish (i.e. touch the wall on your back) and then push off on your front.
