Thu Apr 21st End of Session Dinner / Program Evaluation Focus Group
Jim Lee (7:30am Earlybirds) is taking a Program Evaluation course as part of his Doctorate in Divinity.  His chosen topic for evaluation is our Masters Swimming Program, in particular: workout schedule, goal setting, stroke improvement, and facilities.  He is putting together a web questionnaire that everyone will be invited to complete, likely in the May/June time frame.  First, however, he needs to meet with a group of swimmers to better determine the exact questions to be asked.  As we normally have a good sized group going out for dinner after the last Whitecaps workout of the session, Jim is going to join us and ask questions over dinner on Thu Apr 21st.  Swimmers from all groups are invited to attend.  Meet by the new Tuck Shop (Control Centre) at 7:45pm Thu Apr 21st to decide on a restaurant.  If any Nightcaps swimmers wish to join us, let me know and I'll ensure you are notified as to the location.  Your cooperation in helping Jim meet his course requirements, and in providing your input as to how we can improve the Masters programs is greatly appreciated!

Early Bird Triathlon at Carleton U
The annual Early Bird Triathlon is hosted by Somersault at Carleton University every May.  This year the date is Sat May 21st.  Note that Masters will be cancelled that morning due to the triathlon, so if you want to swim, you'll have to do the triathlon!  Full details at: http://www.somersault.ca/2may21.html.

    Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  As my schedule has changed, I'm considering trying a different Masters group in May.  If I find it's not working out well for me, is it possible to switch groups part way through the session?  Returning Swimmer

Dear R. Swimmer:  As long as there is space in the group you wish to switch to, you can switch groups by contacting the Athletics office and paying a $10+GST fee.  You can keep an eye on the number of spaces left in each group via the on-line registration system.  As you're not sure the new group will work out for you, I'd recommend signing up for just May-June to start with, and waiting to sign up for July-August until you're sure which group you prefer.  You can also check how many spaces remain in the July-August groups via the on-line registration system (which will be up and running Mon Apr 18th).

Dear Coach:  I sometimes arrive late for practice.  What can I do to avoid disrupting my lane-mates?  Busy Swimmer

Dear B. Swimmer:  First check with the coach as to which lane you should join.  Sometimes the coach may suggest a different lane from normal due to numbers, etc.  When you join a lane, ensure that the swimmers know you are getting in, especially if it's not busy and they are swimming straight up and down, rather than in a circle -- collisions can be very painful!  Even if the swimmers are already on their main set, ensure that you warm up properly before doing any hard swimming.

Dear Coach:  How can I find out my times for my Time Trials for this session and previous sessions?  Just Curious

Dear J. Curious:  I have all the time trial times for the past four years in a spreadsheet.  Just send me an e-mail and I can send you your times.

Dear Coach:  What suggestions do you have for warm up at a swim meet?  I always feel stiff in my first race.  Competitive Swimmer

Dear C. Swimmer:  First, if the competition is in the morning, it's important to get up pretty early (a few hours before the meet starts) so that your body will be over the normal early morning stiffness.  Your warm up at a competition should be similar to your warm up during workout (i.e. minimum 15-20min).  Ensure that you start out easy and warm up gradually.  Also make sure that you practice all the strokes you'll be racing, as well as turns at both ends (every pool is a little different).  Towards the end of warm up you should do some faster swimming working on your race pace.  It's also important to warm down between events and after your last race (100-300m easy) to get the lactic acid out of your system.  Do this as soon as possible after each race.  If you have a long gap before your first race or between races, you may also want to get back in for a short swim to re-warm up before your race.  Everyone's favourite warm up is a little different.  On the days where you have a good workout, remember what you did in your warm up, as that will help indicate what works best for you.

Dear Coach:  I hear that you are taking over as head Varsity swimming coach next year.  Does that mean you'll no longer coach the morning Masters?  A Morning Swimmer

Dear A.M. Swimmer:  The Varsity swimming coaching responsibilities for 2005-2006 should be confirmed within the next few weeks.  It's likely that I'll be taking on a larger role than in the past, but I those changes will not affect my Masters coaching responsibilities.  I do plan to continue coaching the morning Masters.

Dear Coach:  Have you seen any studies that chart raw arm strength vs. 50 meter sprint times for Masters or Varsity swimmers?  If not it might be a neat topic for a research report...  I think I need to spend more time in the gym!  A Sprinter

Dear A. Sprinter:  I haven't seen any studies on arm strength vs 50m speed, but I can guarantee it's not going to be linear, or anywhere close.  The main muscles used in freestyle are lats, pecs and triceps, so I'd suspect that back/chest strength is as important as arm strength, but again there won't be a linear relationship.  I found a few web articles that you may find interesting (see below).  One actually says that weight training makes swimmers slower -- I don't believe that (at least not if it's done right!).  However, flexibility is very very important for swimming and most very muscular people do lack flexibility and thus make poor swimmers.  Thus, if you do add weights to your regime, also add lots of stretching -- shoulder flexibility is key!  For a different viewpoint from the below, there's an article in the latest SwimNews about Ryk Neethling, the South American miler turned sprinter (he anchored the winning 4x100FR in Athens -- one of the greatest upsets of the games).  Sprinters do tend to be more muscular than distance swimmers and he says he's put on 35lbs since becoming a sprinter.

Michael Phelps is the American who was aiming for 8 golds in Athens, and did get 8 medals.  While he is very flexible and has great strokes, he never does weights and is one of the weakest swimmers ever tested by the US team trainers(!), so I thought that searching on "Michael Phelps strength" would bring up some interesting articles.  Here they are:
