(Note that this is an extra-long newsletter as it has the summary of the end of term time trials.)

Summer Session
The Summer Masters session starts Mon Jul 4th.  Please note that starting Jul 9th the Saturday swims in July/August will be 10am-11am ONLY.  Registration for July/August is separate from the May/June registration, so if you plan to swim over the summer, please ensure that you have registered.  Note also that the public swim schedule has changed significantly for July/August, especially on the weekend.  Pick up a schedule or check the posted signs or web site.

End of Term Morning Coffee / Dinner
Thanks to all swimmers who attended the end of term morning coffee on Wed Jul 29th (Treats) and the end of term dinner on Thu Jul 30th (Colonnade Restaurant).

Masters Swimming Feedback Questionnaire
Here is some more information from the recent e-survey.  As noted in the last newsletter, the summer session swimmers will have the option of filling in a feedback request form where they can specify their priorities as to feedback and ensure their coach is aware of the areas they are focusing on.  If this works well, we will continue this in the Fall.  Thanks again to Jim Lee (7:30am Earlybirds) for his help with the survey!
Are you unable to attend workout due to work commitments: Sometimes: 47%, Never: 26%, Often: 22%, Won't Return due to Schedule: 4%
Comments: work schedule is busier some weeks than others; business travel causes problems; some of my classes conflict; flexibility in attending morning or evening workouts would help a lot (several swimmers noted this -- we may trial a more flexible option this Fall)
What other swim times would work for you/Comments:  Answers to this were all over the map!  Many said current times are good.  Several asked for a more flexible program (see above).  A few asked for 6am and 7am start times (rather than 6:30am and 7:30am) which isn't feasible with the current pool schedule, similarly for the requests for 4-5pm.  There was a request to run the 6:30am group year round (unfortunately, the Varsity team currently has priority Sept-Feb).  Note that those who like the 6am/6:30am time and are fast enough have the option of joining High Intensity for Sept-Feb.  A few asked for Nightcaps in the summer (not possible in the 8-9am slot due to very high revenue generating school groups, and the earlier time of 7:15-8pm offered in the past wasn't generating enough interest to continue).  There was one request for a 4th evening workout (instead of Sunday morning), and one request to be able to pay for fewer than 4 workouts per week.  While some complained about the later Sat swims for Jul/Aug, a couple are happy about the later time!  Just goes to show that there is no pleasing everyone, but do continue to make your preferences known.
How important are clear personal goals to you as a Masters Swimmer?: Somewhat: 52%; Not Very: 35%; Very: 12%
How clear are your goals now?: Somewhat Clear: 51%; Vague: 25%; Very Clear: 12%; No Goals: 9%
Present Goals (numbers will add to well over 100% as most indicated several responses): Fitness: 69%; Stroke Improvement: 65%; Stress Relief: 55%; Cardio Workout: 54%; Increased Speed: 51%; Weight Control: 40%; Social Activity: 34%; Triathlon/Other Cross Training: 32%; Masters Competition: 23%; Just Enjoy Swimming: 11%
How did you decide on your goals?: Personal Decision: 92%; Physical Evaluation: 5%; Consultation with Coach: 3%
Would you like to meet periodically to discuss your goals with a coach?: Maybe: 51%; Yes: 26%; No: 19%
Would you pay extra for this?: Maybe: 43%; No: 32%; Yes: 25%
(There is a space on the summer session feedback form for other comments/requests.  Those interested can indicate their goals or a desire to discuss these with their coach.)

Competitions For All
While most Masters competitions are open only to those registered with Masters Swimming Ontario (MSO), there are some upcoming events open to everyone.  There are two Meech Lake open water swims open to all swimmers and triathletes (but if you wear a wetsuit you are considered "exhibition"!), a 3k on July 16th and a 4k on August 20th, and a postal 1500m and 1 hour swim.  Details in the "Masters Swimming Competitions" section below.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  I'm thinking of doing the 3k Open Water Swim in Meech Lake later this month.  Do I have to do the whole thing one stroke, or can I switch strokes?  New Open Water Swimmer

Dear N.O.W. Swimmer:  As this is a freestyle race, you can complete it using whatever mix of strokes you like, changing strokes at any time.

Dear Coach:  I know I swam the 1500 last term, but I can't remember my time.  Can you help?  Forgetful Swimmer

Dear F. Swimmer:  I have a spreadsheet with all the time trial times for the last few years.  Just e-mail me to get your old times.

Spring/Summer Sessions
The Summer Masters sessions start on Mon Jul 4th.  Details and prices are on the Masters web site: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com, and on the Carleton Athletics web site: http://www.carleton.ca/athleticsNote that we have separated registration for May/June and July/August this year so that you can more easily join Masters for just May/June, just July/August, or switch groups between May-June and July-August.  Please note the new Saturday morning time for July/August is 10-11am only.  You can register on-line for the programs (http://www.carleton.ca/athletics), but memberships must be purchased through the Athletics office, now on the main floor (520-4480 8:30am-4:30pm M-F), next to the new Control Centre.

XI FINA World Championships, Montreal, July 16-31st
While competing in this meet is for the super-elite only (Michael Phelps was recently in Montreal promoting the meet), anyone can attend to watch the five disciplines (swimming, water polo, diving, synchronized swimming, and open water swimming) taking place on Iles Ste-Helene and Notre-Dame.  The Cirque du Soleil is performing at the opening ceremonies ($150 & $175!), but ticket prices for some of the other sessions are more affordable (e.g. $10 for the open water swimming, $20 for the cheapest seats for the swimming heats, etc.).
Full details on the meet web site: http://www.montreal2005.org/
A cheaper way to see some of the events would be by volunteering, details at: http://www.montreal2005.org/eng/volunteer/signup.cfm.

Newsletter: An e-newsletter (like this one) is sent out about every two weeks.  If you have new lane-mates, please mention to them that they should give their e-mail address to their coach if they'd like to receive it.

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: Are you interested in getting copies of Lynn's workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out two week’s worth of workouts on alternate Sundays.  (Note that these are only the workouts that Lynn coaches.  If Lynn is not your coach, the workouts will be different from the workouts your coach gives you!)

Weekly Social Events: All swimmers are invited to join us for:
Thursday Dinner (after Whitecaps workout): Meet by the Tuck Shop around 7:45pm
Saturday Brunch (after 10-11am workout if sufficient interest): Meet by the Tuck Shop around 11:30am

Triathletes: Check out Rudy Hollywood’s website: http://www.trirudy.com and subscribe to the daily tri-news e-mail.

General Information: Program information, old newsletters and the Carleton Masters records can be viewed at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com.

Your input to this newsletter is most welcome, especially for the Swimmer Notes, Race Results and Ask the Coach sections!  To be added to or removed from the receiver list, just let me know (lynnmarshall@sympatico.ca).
