Welcome All
Welcome to all new and returning Carleton Masters swimmers.  If you are planning to swim in Fall 2005 and have not yet registered, details on the programs and prices are in the reminders section below.  There is still space in all groups, except 6am High Intensity.
My apologies to those who were misinformed by the Athletics office about the start date of the session (it was Tuesday or Wednesday, not Monday).

MSO Registration
Interested in competing in Masters Swimming Competitions this season?  If so, it's time to renew / purchase your annual Masters Swimming Ontario (MSO) membership.  Cost is $25 (cash or cheque payable to "Carleton Masters Swim Club"), and your membership will be good until Dec 31st, 2006.  For new memberships I need: name, full address, home phone, date of birth and whether or not you've been registered with any Ontario Masters swim club previously.  For renewals, just let me know if any of your contact information has changed.  Please get this information and your money to Lynn by Sat Oct 1st.  Carleton Masters charges a $1 late fee for registrations after that date.

Swimmer Notes

Birth Announcement: Fiona H (Whitecaps "B"), husband Mark and big brother Gavin report that Jonas Brigg Blackburn was born at 9:16pm on September 1st, 2005.  Weighing in at 7 pounds, 11 ounces, he is a wonderful, healthy boy who looks just like his Dad!  Everyone is doing really well and we're loving this new family.  Gavin likes to hold his baby brother and seems to be adjusting well to the change.  There is a photo of Jonas on the web site: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/sum05photos/

Baby Photo:  Sarah F (7:30am Earlybirds) and husband Tate have named their son (born 3:10pm Sept 1st) Jack Alexander Farrish McLeod, and there is now a photo of Jack on the web site:  http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/sum05photos/.

Update from Jeffrey and Julie:  Jeffrey F (x-7:30am Earlybirds) reports that Julie D-F (x-7:30am Earlybirds) will be returning to the pool in January.  Jeffrey will be limiting himself to cycling for now.  Baby Laurent is growing fast and a recent photo can be seen at: http://laurent.mtbhost.com/CanoeTrip/slides/IMG_3364.html.

Congrats to Maxim:  Congratulations to Maxim H (Summer Whitecaps "A") on making the Titans Water Polo competitive Bantam A (Sharks) boy's team!  Maxim was told in June that he'd need to improve his speed and endurance to make the team, as at age 12, he is a year younger than most on the team.  That's why Maxim joined Masters for the summer.  He trained hard and came to nearly every workout, except for one week when he was at water polo camp, and it paid off!  We look forward to seeing him again next summer.

Men's Suit for Sale:  Men's Black Nylon Speedo briefs with Carleton Masters logo. Size 32, only worn once.  Asking $20.  Please contact jeffrey.furry@gmail.com.

Adult Coed Recreational Water Polo: Registration has started for the adult coed recreational water polo league.  This program is primarily targeted at adults (women and men, age 17+) with no competitive water polo experience but attempts to accommodate more experienced players as well.  There are usually about equal numbers of men and women ranging in age from 18 to 50.  For more details see: http://titanswp.hypermart.net/Titans200304/menu_programs_rec.html or contact Jason: jason.sterne@alcatel.com.

Nose Clips for Sale:  Cost $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Carleton Swim Suits:  Carleton swim suits (in a range of sizes) will be available in the October/November time frame.

Fall Session Information
This section will inform you ahead of time of any upcoming special sets / workouts.  Note that the workout themes are posted on the bulletin board and web site: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com.  If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask your coach.

Starting next time (in two weeks), we'll list those with perfect weekday attendance in this section.  For now, I just wanted to mention Francois A's (High Intensity 1, High Intensity 2, 7:30am Earlybirds) training schedule.  Francois has registered in no less than three groups for this term!  As he attended the 7:30am $3 workout on Mon Sept 12th, in addition to the regular session workouts, he did 8 swim workouts this past week.  No doubt he slept well last night.

Race Results: (Please send in your results!!)

Sat Sept 3rd Canadian Triathlon, Ottawa
Full results at: http://www.sportstats.ca.  Here is Margie B's (Whitecaps "A") race report from TriRudy:
September 3rd was fabulous!  Thanks to all the volunteers, patiently doling out water and treats, dodging the empty cups hurtling towards them, cheering whether we smiled or not. Thanks to my friends for boosting me with their fabulous banner ("That's for me!", I wanted to shout), and to my brilliant family and better half for cheering me on like motivational speakers: "You are strong!", they called in spite of their usual British reserve. I actually laughed during the race - the big race that I had been so worked up about! Thanks to those who inspired my participation, especially Mark for the plan, the training tips, not to mention letting me worry out loud.
   The race day:
I was so thoroughly craving the race. Having moved during the summer, I had restricted myself to only one other triathlon all summer long. It was a beautiful morning and I was feeling quite cheery...
The swim: Two small panics; first of all, there were all those nasty arms pushing me down - I was burning loads of energy just to stay afloat. But that episode passed and I forgot about it.... And then, just as I was looking forward to wrapping up the swim, I saw a school of triathletes turning around at the buoys! Gasp - another loop? I thought that was for the full Iron competitors... Ah, just a short turn back to the beach. Don't panic. In the end, I came out feeling very positive, which set the tone for the remainder of the race. (note to self: next time, read the map three times).
The bike (my weakest) may not have been fast compared to the "Trirudy-ites", but it felt wonderful to me with all those cheering people. Admittedly, I was in severe pain by the end, and counting down those laps. (Note to self: sort out pain points). It really helped to think of my amazing sister, who I had visited the day before in hospital. She had just completed her own double-Iron-equivalent: a day and a half of intense and difficult child birth. "This is nothing in comparison," I told myself, "just keep going." And I did.
After the bike, I dawdled a little in transition, talking to some folks by the bike racks, wondering how on Earth they could have finished so fast - Ah, a relay team. They fell silent so I could "concentrate". (Most thoughtful, thanks... I must have been stalling on that final leg).
The final leg: I started out strong... well, actually, that was what those sweet volunteers said, so there's no telling how I really started. I was tired, I won't deny it. I felt thirsty and slow, and hungry and full all at once, and I kept contemplating those little yellow huts along the way... (Note to self: Go, or forget it, as they say). I pushed along slowly, knowing I was close. "Just keep going, don't let yourself stop" I thought. Who knows what happens to your legs if you stop. Soon, I was pulling into the finish line, with just enough steam to pass the woman in front, whether she was in my race or not.
I crossed the finish line. Delighted and reaching my "stretch target". Some poor fellow had to pull the race chip from my ankle. Too tired to thank him.
I soon discovered my parents waiting for me, impressed as anything, they said. My motivational speakers arrived, a bottle of bubbly and flowers in hand to top off a wonderful day.
What a superb experience I had for my first Half. All that's missing now is the next one.

And here's Louise R's (6:30am Earlybirds) volunteer report:
"They can't hear your soft voice," my fellow water table volunteer told me, as runners bypassed my "Coke, Gatorade and water!"
As much as my triathlon skills are in need of honing, my volunteer skills are even worse.
Because I spent the first half century of my life with no competitive sports involvement whatsoever, when I say "looking good" or "nice pace", I feel as if I'm speaking a foreign language.
Sometimes as I struggle to find the right words to cheer someone on, particularly those I know and care about, they are long gone down the path by the time I manage to open my mouth.
And everyone is so nice to my friend Kristin and me as we jostle for first and second place in our age category. (In every triathlon we've done this season, we've been the only ones in our age category.) As my husband says, "Doesn't that tell you something?"
Nevertheless, even though the races are over, I want to say to the competitors,"You are amazing! Go iron people and half iron people! Your skill and good humour in the sun and rain really are an inspiration!"
It's wonderful to have an iron distance race in Ottawa, and I hope more spectators come out next time.
Congratulations on a superb accomplishment. In future, I'll yell louder.

Sun Sept 4th Maine Triathlon, Camden MN (1/2mi, 27mi, 6.6mi; 199 competitors)
Congratulations to Andy J (6:30am Earlybirds) and Ilona (Lily) C (Whitecaps "A") who did very well on an extremely challenging course.  Lily was 45th overall and the 8th woman in 2:33:26.  Andy was 8th overall and 8th man in 2:14:55.  Full results at: http://www.trifind.net/results/Maine_Sport/05/indv.htm.
Here's Andy's report:
Lil and I had excellent races in Maine this past weekend... Was the hardest tri I had ever done. The hilliest run and also the hilliest ride.. I've ridden lots in the Gats and a couple times in Placid on the IM course and this bike course was much tougher. Lil finished 8th women and I was 8th overall. There were no categories for age groups or anything like that.
More importantly we had a blast. Went to Gloucester, Maine and saw the fisherman's memorial, ate lobster and clams at a small hole in the wall joint, etc., lots of shopping too.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Why do the lanes go in opposite directions and what do you mean by lane etiquette?  A Newbie

Dear A. Newbie:  Welcome to Masters swimming!  Lanes that are next to each other go in opposite directions so that if you hit arms with someone in the lane next to you which happens occasionally, you are both going in the same direction, so it is usually not very painful.  If you're not sure which direction your lane should go, ask!  Lane etiquette is the rules we follow to ensure that there are no collisions while swimming.  The most important rule is that those who are not swimming should keep out of the way of those who are.  Thus, if you are resting at the end of the lane, move over right next to the lane rope, so that those swimming can turn without interference.

Dear Coach:  Should I come to the 8am or the 9am workout on Saturday morning?  Saturday Swimmer

Dear S. Swimmer: You can come to whichever workout fits your schedule best.  The workout is the same for both hours.  Usually the 8am workout is a bit less busy, as those with children in safety supervision and those planning to go to brunch with the group swim at 9am.  For example, on Sat Sept 17th there were 18 at the 8am workout, and 23 at the 9am workout.

Dear Coach:  My swim suits keep wearing out.  I'd like to get a polyester suit, but the Carleton women's suits don't offer enough support.  Any suggestions?  Busty Swimmer

Dear B. Swimmer:  A polyester suit is always a good choice, as it will last at least a year of daily use.  Aquasport (http://www.aquasport.ca) in Montreal sells three "conservative" styles of polyester suits with built in bras.  You can order by phone (1-800-567-6660) or in person.

Faculty/Staff/Students Please Note September Membership Change
As announced in the July 11th "Today @ Carleton" (see: http://www.carleton.ca/newsnet/), faculty, staff and students will not be considered Full Athletics Members starting in September, 2005.  While faculty, staff and students will continue to be admitted free of charge to public swims and the weight room upon showing their staff/student card, they must pay full price (the non-member rate) for all programs unless they pay a "bump up" fee of $50/term for a "Gold Membership" which will give a 25% discount on most programs, and access to members only programs.  As the Masters programs are members only programs, any faculty, staff or students who wish to swim with Masters must pay this "bump up" fee of $50/term.  The Gold Membership will also give access to the cardio room.  Faculty, staff and students who do not want to purchase a Gold Membership can get a cardio room pass for $25/term.

Newsletter: An e-newsletter (like this one) is sent out about every two weeks.  If you have new lane-mates, please mention to them that they should give their e-mail address to their coach if they'd like to receive it.

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: Are you interested in getting copies of Lynn's workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out two week’s worth of workouts on alternate Sundays.  (Note that these are only the workouts that Lynn coaches.  If Lynn is not your coach, the workouts will be different from the workouts your coach gives you!)
