Athletics Parking Lot 5 Update / Clarification

For those of you with parking passes for the Athletics parking lot (#5), there has been a lot of confusing information out there.  I called Parking Services and this is what I was told…  The front part of this lot (the part next to the Fieldhouse) will become a visitor parking (pay & display lot) sometime in the spring.  Until the spring, the whole parking lot is available for permit holders.  When things change, there will be signs posted.

Jim Lee in Hospital

Jim Lee (7:30am Earlybirds) suffered a stroke on Sat Jan 14th.  As his wife Deb (x-7:30am Earlybirds) is a nurse, she got him to hospital in time to receive TPA which worked well in his case, so the prognosis is good.  He is at the General Hospital and though he tires easily, visitors are allowed (3-8pm).  I visited him on Tuesday afternoon and he is looking well.  Our thoughts are with the Lee family at this difficult time.

Sat Jan 7th Technosport Sprint Meet

Nine Carleton swimmers participated: George (WCB), Andrew (WCB), Bozena (WCB), Rob (7:30am), Lynn (Coach), Francois P (WCA), Katie (WCB), Vanessa (WCB -- her first Masters meet!), and Gi (WCA).  There were lots of good swims, including club records by Andrew, Rob and Lynn.  More details when the full results are available.  Official results will eventually be available at: http://ca.geocities.com/technosport@rogers.com/results/results.htm.  Here’s George’s report…

George’s Report on the Technosport Meet of Jan 7th, 2006

Carleton Masters were well represented with nine swimmers, four ladies (Bozena, Katie S, Lynn, Vanessa) and five men (Andrew P, Francois P, George, Gi and Rob T).

Vanessa, in her first meet, showed considerable poise, beating most of her entry times, except in one occasion where her entry time was mixed up with her age, requiring that she does the 100m free in 28 seconds, which would have been an Olympic, World and a phenomenal feat; as it turned out she did it in a very impressive 1:33 (George’s unofficial timing).

Bozena once more showed her stamina and good form by swimming almost all events in good times.

In the 100IM Katie and Rob staged an exciting race as they swam in adjacent lanes, with the lead going back and forth between them: first Rob ahead in the fly, then Katie catching up in the back and breast strokes, at which point the race appeared to be over, but Rob, with a great effort, caught up with Katie in the free and the two touched the wall simultaneously.

The highlight of the day was Lynn’s spectacular performance in the 200m backstroke, in which a new World Record was established by about 3 seconds (2:31.5 vs 2:34.5).  [Editor’s Note: Moving to a new age group helped here!]

Later at breakfast at “Father and Sons” as we discussed the days events, we were all so excited from witnessing Lynn’s swim, that Gi thought it necessary to pour water all over the table, not once, not twice, but three times, presumably in an attempt to cool us down.  Lynn was the least excited in all this, since she has done this before.  Still for the rest of us it was a privilege to be there when it happened.

Sun Jan 15th 1000 Island Y Masters Almost Serious Meet (Brockville)

Five Carleton swimmers participated (George, Andrew, Rob T, Gi and Lynn).  All swimmers posted good times and enjoyed the meet (and the food!).  Official times were already available before we left Brockville, and each swimmer received a certificate with their events and times.  I didn’t make note of everyone’s placings, so that will come later, but George, Andrew and Lynn all  set club records.

George (80-84): 200fs (4:20.94)

Andrew (55-59): 50br (43.73), 100br (1:34.59), 50fl (40.40), 100IM (1:32.16)

Lynn (45-49): 100fs (1:04.01), 50bk (35.90), 50fl (32.48), 200fl (2:30.45), 100IM (1:15.28)

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Can you remind me of the back to breast stroke turn rule?  An IM-er

Dear A. IM-er:  The backstroke to breaststroke turn in an IM is considered a backstroke finish, followed by breaststroke.  Thus, the rule for the backstroke finish applies, i.e. you must touch the wall on your back (a flip turn is not allowed).  You may touch the wall with any part of your body, but it’s quickest (and safest!) to use your hand, rather than your head.  Once your hand touches the wall, you can then turn onto your stomach and push off on your front.  The quickest way to turn is to spin on your back and lift your feet out of the water – ask your coach for a demo.

Web Site Links and Newsletter Archive: Some swimmers reported that they had problems viewing some of the recent photos.  It's sometimes easier to access the web site pages, by going to the main page (http://carletonmasters.tripod.com) and then clicking on the link of interest (e.g. recent photos).

Also, if your copy of the newsletter does not arrive or is accidentally deleted, you can view all the old newsletters on the web site.

Newsletter: An e-newsletter (like this one) is sent out about every two weeks.  If you have new lane-mates, please mention to them that they should give their e-mail address to their coach if they'd like to receive it.

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: Are you interested in getting copies of Lynn's workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out two week’s worth of workouts on alternate Sundays.  (Note that these are only the workouts that Lynn coaches.  If Lynn is not your coach, the workouts will be different from the workouts your coach gives you!)

Weekly Social Events: All swimmers are invited to join us for:

Thursday Dinner (after Whitecaps workout): Meet by the Control Desk around 7:45pm

Thursday Drinks (after Nightcaps workout): Meet by the Control Desk around 9:30pm
