Daylight Savings Time

Due to the start of daylight savings time this weekend, it’s going to go back to being dark (for a while) for the trip to Carleton for those swimming at 6:30am.  Don’t forget to change your clocks on Sunday!  If your lane-mates on Monday morning are different from usual, that may be the reason J !

Easter Cancellation

There will be no Earlybirds workouts (6:30am, 7:30am or 8:30am) on Fri Apr 14th, due to the Good Friday holiday.  There will be just one public swim offered at Carleton that day from 11:45am-3:30pm.  Masters runs as usual on Sat Apr 15th and Mon Apr 17th

End of Winter Session / Start of Spring/Summer Session

The Winter session ends Thu Apr 20th / Fri Apr 21st for all groups.  The pool is closed Apr 22nd through May 7th for annual maintenance (no $3 workouts as there will be no water in the pool!!).

The Spring session starts Mon May 8th.  Registration for Spring/Summer starts Wed Apr 5th.  Masters groups available for Spring/Summer are: 6:30am Earlybirds; 7:30am Earlybirds; 8:30am Earlybirds (May-June only); and 6pm Whitecaps.  Saturdays will be 8-9am OR 9-10am in May/June, and 10-11am ONLY in Jul/Aug.  Check the Masters web site (http://carletonmasters.tripod.com) and the Carleton web site (http://www.carleton.ca/athletics/programs/summer_programs/aquatics.html#masters) for full details and prices.  You can register on-line or through the Customer Service office (520-4480, 8:30am-4:30pm M-F) anytime after 8:30am Wed Apr 5th.

Postal Meet Open to All

1000 Islands Y is hosting a postal swim meet (mail in your times) that is open to everyone (you do not need to be registered with MSO).  To enter you need to be timed by two people in 50fl, 50bk, 50br, 50fs and 100IM any time in April (not all on the same day), and send in your results by May 10th.  It costs $15 and you get a T-shirt.  Let me know if you want an entry form.  This is not a sanctioned “meet” so times do not count towards club records or Ontario/Canada 2006 statistics.  However, as long as your coach is one of your two timers, your times will count towards the end of term time trials!

Swimmer Notes

Get Well Wishes:  Whitecaps swimmer Evelyn Simpson has recently been hospitalized for removal of a benign cyst in her brain.  While this is quite serious, prognosis is good.

Carleton University Choir:  7:30am Earlybirds swimmer, Josee Verhoeff, is a member of this choir which is giving a performance at 8pm on Apr 1st at St Mattias Anglican Church.  Tickets are $20 adults, $15 seniors and $10 students.  $2 discount for adults/seniors if you get tickets ahead of time from Josee.  Full details at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/CUC_April_1_Concert.jpg.

Gilbert and Sullivan:  Whitecaps “A” swimmer, Lisa Hans, will be performing in the Savoy Society’s “HMS Pinafore” to be presented at the Centrepointe Theatre Mar 31, Apr 1, Apr 2nd (matinee) and Apr 5-8th.  Tickets are $24.75 for adults, $14.75 for youth and students, and for the matinee for children 10 and under it is $11.25.  Groups of 10 or more get a $2 discount.  Talk to Lisa at the pool, or visit the web site to buy tickets on-line: http://www.centrepointetheatre.com

Big 5-0!:  Joanne Dawson (Whitecaps “A”) has a milestone birthday coming up on Wed Apr 19th.  Thus the end-of-term dinner on Thu Apr 20th will also be a birthday celebration for Joanne.  All welcome and Joanne gets to pick the venue!

Ease on Down the Road (Wizard of Oz Theme):  Michelle, daughter of Nicole Delisle (Whitecaps “A”) will be performing a solo in this performance to be held at 2pm and 7pm Sat May 6th at Centrepointe Theatre.  Nicole can get advance tickets for $25 until Apr 22nd.  Tickets are $29.43 at the door.  Everyone is welcome to attend the get together at Nicole’s place after the show (773 Fairdale Ave.)

Returning to Ottawa:  Charles McFarland (x-7:30am Earlybirds), who has been working in Winnipeg for the past year, is returning to Ottawa.  He will be the manager of the Centrepointe and Orleans Theatres.  See press release: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/charlesm.html.  Congrats to Charles and we look forward to seeing him back in the pool soon!

Swimmers in the News:  Two Whitecaps “A” swimmers are about to become famous!!  Francois Parent (Whitecaps “A”) will be featured in an article on Tourette’s syndrome in Canadian Living (May or June), and Lisa Hans (Whitecaps “A”) is a soloist on a CD to be released in April.

BIG Swim for Arthritis: This swim for arthritis (promoting the benefits that swimming has for those with arthritis) is being held April 20-23, 2006 at pools across Canada. For more information visit http://www.bigswim.ca or call 1-877 BIG SWIM.  Volunteers and swimmers needed!

Melanie Scantland (Whitecaps “B”) is participating in this event by doing the 5000m swim.  She is collecting pledges at the pool or you can contact her via e-mail: Scantland.MM@forces.gc.ca.

Margaret King (8:30am Earlybirds) is planning to do a 1500m swim for Arthritis at Carleton on Apr 21st.

Also, for those of you who know Vincent Richer (Technosport), he is going to swim 40km (two 5km swims each day) over the four days in support of this cause.  Check out his web site at: http://www3.sympatico.ca/vricher/.  As each 5k swim is going to take him 3 hours (he’s a steady but certainly not fast swimmer!), this quite an undertaking.

Support Cancer Research and Coach Kristi:  On July 21-23, 2006, Kristi Dean will be participating in a very special event called The Weekend to End Breast Cancer.  She'll walk 60 kilometres over the course of one weekend with thousands of other women and men. The net proceeds will support breast cancer research, and services through the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.  She has agreed to raise at least $2,000, but has set her personal goal at $3,500.  More info at:
http://www.endcancer.ca/site/TR?px=1210135&s_redId=13435&fl=en_US&s_tafId=13970&pg=personal&fr_id=1160

Carleton Swim Suits:  Price is $70 for the women's suits ($55 for girl's) and $35 for the men's (cash or cheque payable to "Carleton University").  The men's suits range from size 28 to 38 (no 36s left).  The women's suits range from girl's size 22 to women's size 40 (no 24, 30, 36 or 38 left).  If you would like a suit, please e-mail me at least a day in advance to arrange a time (preferably when I am coaching) so that I can have the suits ready for you.

Nose Clips for Sale:  Cost $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Winter Session Information

This is where the winter attendance stats are listed along with information on upcoming special workouts (e.g. time trials).  The regular workout themes are posted on the web site.  Coming up soon will be the end of term time trials.  Everyone will have the opportunity to swim a timed 1500 (800 for those who take over 2:10/100m) on Thu Apr 6th / Fri Apr 7th.  (Those swimming in the meet on Apr 8th will do their 1500 later in the term!)  Between then and the end of the session, you also have a chance to do some shorter timed swims – ask your coach for more details.  As usual, for the last day of the session (Thu Apr 20th / Fri Apr 21st) there will be a “fun” set – feel free to give input to your coach!

Quebec Provincial Water Polo Championships

Jean-Francois Jacques (x-7:30am Earlybirds) son of Francois Jacques (7:30am Earlybirds) is a member of the Hull water polo team that recently won the Quebec Provincial Water Polo Championships.  Congrats to J-F!  FYI, J-F is in his first year at Carleton University studying Architecture (a very challenging program).  Despite that, he has managed to find time to join both the Varsity Water Polo and Varsity Swim teams, as well as training with the Hull water polo team.

Fri Mar 31st – Sun Apr 2nd Ontario Provincial Championships (St Catharines)

Three Carleton swimmers are participating.  Best of luck to Rob T (Earlybirds/Nightcaps), and George and Andrew P (both Whitecaps “B”).  More info at: http://www.eqadvantage.com/ontmastersprov/.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Can you please remind me of the difference between kick, pull and drill?  New Swimmer

Dear N. Swimmer:  Sure, but don’t be afraid to ask your coach during workout if you are ever confused!  Kick is “legs only”, often done with a kick board.  You are generally using both legs but neither arm.  Pull is “arms only”, often done with a pull buoy.  You are generally using both arms but neither leg.  Drill is focusing on technique.  One can certainly argue that both kick and pull are drills, but we usually do drills without equipment (or sometimes with other equipment like flippers and/or paddles).  Examples of drills are swimming with one-arm focusing on the underwater part of the stroke, full stroke swim concentrating on body position, etc.   Ask your coach for some good drills for you.

Dear Coach:  I always lose track – any tricks for counting lengths?  Not A Mathematician

Dear N.A. Mathematician: Generally the best way to keep track is to use the pace clock to help you.  This trick only fails if you take exactly 1min per 50 (or 100!).  Say it usually takes you 50 sec per 50m, then if you start on the top and the pace clock is around the 30, that likely means that you’ve done 150m (or maybe 450m).  The difference is then enough that you should know which is correct!  Other ways to keep track can be done by varying something in your swimming to help you count (e.g. alternating between two breathing patterns every 50 or 100m or doing a different stroke for the last length of every 200m).  Some other innovative techniques swimmers have mentioned include swimming one length for each member of your family, and repeating as necessary – this gives you time to think nice (or nasty!) thoughts about each one.  I’ve also seen swimmers move equipment around on the deck (e.g. water bottle to the left, or right) to help keep track, but this involves stopping.

Dear Coach:  What should I bring to a swim meet?  New Competitor

Dear N. Competitor:  Everyone is different and has their own needs, but some general things include everything you need to race plus a back up, just in case (e.g. 2 suits, 2 pairs of goggles, 2 bathing caps).  Bring several towels or a towel and a shammy.  Lots of warm clothes are helpful (e.g. track suit, bathrobe, T-shirt, shorts, …).  Standing on the deck in bare feet is hard on the feet and back, so sandals or shoes (not worn outside) are good.  I suggest a water bottle plus easy to digest snacks (e.g. arrowroot cookies).  You may want to bring the meet information (order of events, etc.) and a pen / paper to make a note of your events / heats / lanes / times.

Reminders

Winter Term Registration: If you have not yet done so, please register for the Winter term as soon as possible, to ensure that the coaches have up-to-date class lists.  You can register on-line 24 hrs/day at http://www.carleton.ca/athletics, or by phone (520-4480) or in person (main floor) from 8:30am-4:30pm M-F.  Note that those registered in the current High Intensity groups are paid up until February.  All other groups require re-registration for January.  Whitecaps is full for the Winter term, but all other groups have space.  You can also register now for the 6:30am Earlybirds (starting in March).  The workout themes for Winter 2006 are posted on the web site: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com.

Web Site Links and Newsletter Archive: Some swimmers reported that they had problems viewing some of the recent photos.  It's sometimes easier to access the web site pages, by going to the main page (http://carletonmasters.tripod.com) and then clicking on the link of interest (e.g. recent photos).

Also, if your copy of the newsletter does not arrive or is accidentally deleted, you can view all the old newsletters on the web site.

Newsletter: An e-newsletter (like this one) is sent out about every two weeks.  If you have new lane-mates, please mention to them that they should give their e-mail address to their coach if they'd like to receive it.

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: Are you interested in getting copies of Lynn's workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out two week’s worth of workouts on alternate Sundays.  (Note that these are only the workouts that Lynn coaches.  If Lynn is not your coach, the workouts will be different from the workouts your coach gives you!)

Weekly Social Events: All swimmers are invited to join us for:

- Thursday Dinner (after Whitecaps workout: all year)

- Thursday Drinks (after Nightcaps workout: Sept-Apr)

- Saturday Brunch (after 9-10am workout: Sept-Jun; after 10-11am workout: Jul-Aug)

Meet by the Control Desk after workout.
