Apr 17th Late Opening / Apr 21st Filming

Our apologies to some 6:30am swimmers who went home thinking that there was no swimming on Mon Apr 17th (Easter Monday).  The control desk staff was very late and as doors were propped open and then later closed, some found their way in and some didn’t.

Thanks to the 8:30am swimmers on Fri Apr 21st who all agreed to be filmed.  This footage will be used in a video to encourage students to attend Carleton University.  This was arranged at the last minute, so I was not able to give any advance warning.

Swimmer Notes

Get Well Wishes:  Whitecaps swimmer Evelyn Simpson is now recovering at home and will be doing rehab as an outpatient.  As it will likely be a couple of months before she returns to work and swimming, visitors are welcome.

Big 5-0!:  Thanks to all those who came out for dinner on Thu Apr 20th to celebrate the end of term and Joanne Dawson (Whitecaps “A”)’s 50th.  Cam arranged for their elder son, Sean, to visit from Chicago where he is at University.  It was great to see how shocked Joanne was!  There was a great turn out and we took over the entire restaurant (Infusion).

Ease on Down the Road (Wizard of Oz Theme):  Michelle, daughter of Nicole Delisle (Whitecaps “A”) will be performing a solo in this performance to be held at 2pm and 7pm Sat May 6th at Centrepointe Theatre.  Nicole can get advance tickets for $25 until Apr 22nd.  Tickets are $29.43 at the door.  Everyone is welcome to attend the get together at Nicole’s place after the show (773 Fairdale Ave.)

BIG Swim for Arthritis: This swim for arthritis (promoting the benefits that swimming has for those with arthritis) is being held April 20-23, 2006 at pools across Canada. For more information visit http://www.bigswim.ca or call 1-877 BIG SWIM.  If you would like to sponsor one of our swimmers, your support is appreciated!

Margaret King (8:30am Earlybirds) did her 1500m swim on Fri Apr 21st.  She completed her swim first ever 1500m in 53:26 and raised $125.02 for arthritis.

Updates on Whitecap “B” Melanie Scantland’s 5000m, Nightcap Jasmine Tranter’s 2500m, and Technosport Vincent Richer’s 8 x 5000m will be included next time.

Support Cancer Research and Coach Kristi:  On July 21-23, 2006, Kristi Dean will be participating in a very special event called The Weekend to End Breast Cancer.  She'll walk 60 kilometres over the course of one weekend with thousands of other women and men. The net proceeds will support breast cancer research, and services through the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.  She has agreed to raise at least $2,000, but has set her personal goal at $3,500.  More info at:
http://www.endcancer.ca/site/TR?px=1210135&s_redId=13435&fl=en_US&s_tafId=13970&pg=personal&fr_id=1160

Carleton Swim Suits:  Price is $70 for the women's suits ($55 for girl's) and $35 for the men's (cash or cheque payable to "Carleton University").  The men's suits range from size 28 to 38 (no 36s left).  The women's suits range from girl's size 22 to women's size 40 (no 24, 30, 36 or 38 left).  If you would like a suit, please e-mail me at least a day in advance to arrange a time (preferably when I am coaching) so that I can have the suits ready for you.

Nose Clips for Sale:  Cost $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Time Trial and Relay Summary:

The information below on most improved and fastest swimmers is taken from the time trials done during the Winter session, and includes the relay splits from the end of term relays.  Times done in competitions are not included.  If your times are not listed here and you're curious, just e-mail me for details.  (I have all time trial times since May 2001.)

There were 32 women and 18 men who improved in at least one event!  Eight swimmers improved by over 10 sec / 100m in at least one event!  Leading the way was Lucille P (Nightcaps) improving by 19 sec in 100br.  Vanessa W (Whitecaps “B”) improved her 1500 by nearly 4 min and Megan L (8:30am Earlybirds) improved her 50fl by 7.7 sec, giving them a tie for second with a 15.4 sec / 100m improvement.  Next was Colette K (8:30am Earlybirds) improving her 50fl by 6.7 sec (13.4 sec /100m), followed closely by Sandra A (8:30am Earlybirds) who improved her 100fs by 13.2 sec.  The top male was Rob S (Nightcaps) who improved his 1500fs by just over 3 min (12.1 sec/100m).  Suzanne L (Whitecaps “B”) improved her 800fs by over 1.5 min (12.0 sec/100m), and Lauren D (Whitecaps “A”) improved her 50fs by 5.5 sec (11.0/100m).  Four other swimmers improved by over 5 sec / 100m: Leona C (7:30am Earlybirds), Melanie S (Whitecaps “B”), Francois P (Whitecaps “A”), and Matt T (7:30am Earlybirds).  Great job!

The International Point Scores (link to web page below) are used to determine the best swims.  There were 18 women (15 non-staff) and 20 men (19 non-staff) scoring 400 points or above in at least one event.  Five swimmers scored over 600 points.  Blair C (Whitecaps “A”) led the way with 670 points for his 200fl.  Ben D (Whitecaps “A”) was next with 632 points for 50fs.  Barb P (8:30am Earlybirds) was the top woman with 620 points for 1500fs, followed closely by Kelys M and Laura S (both Whitecaps “A”) with 615 and 611 points respectively for 50fs (just 0.1 sec difference).  Congratulations all, especially those making the fastest swimmer list for the first time!

The top 3 improvements and the top 3 times for each event are also listed below, as are the results of the relays.  Thanks to all who participated, and to the anonymous swimmer who left a chocolate bar and swim ribbon in my swim bag on Fri Apr 21st

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Can you remind me of the pools you recommended during the Carleton pool closure?  Another Keen Swimmer

Dear A.K. Swimmer:  Two good pools (cool-ish water temperature, lots of lane-only swimming) are the Ottawa U pool and the Champagne pool (King Edward a couple of blocks north of Rideau).  The Champagne pool schedule is available here: http://www.ottawa.ca/residents/parks_recreation/swimming/schedules/east/champagne_en.shtml.  The Ottawa U pool schedule for April is here: http://www.geegees.uottawa.ca/en/recswimming/index.asp.  The schedule changes slightly in May, so check again then.

Dear Coach:  Can you send me the most recent newsletter, as I accidentally deleted mine?  Careless Swimmer

Dear C. Swimmer:  I don’t mind doing this if I’m not too busy, but if your request is urgent, don’t forget that the newsletters are posted on the web site: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com.

Dear Coach:  I’m having trouble with my backstroke.  What do you suggest?  Weak Backstroker

Dear W. Backstroker:  Ask your coach to have a look and give you some tips.  Common backstroke problems include:

Body position: Keep your head low in the water and look up at the ceiling (not towards your feet) to help keep your hips/legs up

Body roll: Swim with a good body roll, keeping each shoulder out of the water as long as possible to minimize drag.

Arm movement: Catch the water with a high elbow – bending your arm after it enters the water makes this easier.

Arm timing: Ensure that there is a significant overlap between the arms so that one is always generating propulsion.

Dear Coach:  One of my shoulders hurts after I swim.  Any suggestions?  Sore Swimmer

Dear S. Swimmer:  When an ache develops on one side, it indicates that there is an asymmetry in your stroke.  Quite often this is due to breathing on only one side in freestyle.  It’s very important to breath on both sides to avoid injury.  Also, do ask your coach to look at your stroke to check your stroke mechanics.

Reminders  .

Web Site Links and Newsletter Archive: Some swimmers reported that they had problems viewing some of the recent photos.  It's sometimes easier to access the web site pages, by going to the main page (http://carletonmasters.tripod.com) and then clicking on the link of interest (e.g. recent photos).

Also, if your copy of the newsletter does not arrive or is accidentally deleted, you can view all the old newsletters on the web site.

Newsletter: An e-newsletter (like this one) is sent out about every two weeks.  If you have new lane-mates, please mention to them that they should give their e-mail address to their coach if they'd like to receive it.

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: Are you interested in getting copies of Lynn's workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out two week’s worth of workouts on alternate Sundays.  (Note that these are only the workouts that Lynn coaches.  If Lynn is not your coach, the workouts will be different from the workouts your coach gives you!)

Weekly Social Events: All swimmers are invited to join us for:

- Thursday Dinner (after Whitecaps workout: all year)

- Thursday Drinks (after Nightcaps workout: Sept-Apr)

- Saturday Brunch (after 9-10am workout: Sept-Jun; after 10-11am workout: Jul-Aug)

Meet by the Control Desk after workout.
