CUTCO Cutlery Presentations

Heather Macdonald (Varsity, ROCS Coach) has a summer job giving presentations of CUTCO cutlery.  The presentations take 40 to 60 min and can be given to any number of people as long as one of them is at least 30 years old.  She is paid for giving the presentations, regardless of whether there are any sales.  She’d like to get some experience as she’s new at this, so if you can help out by inviting her to give a presentation, please do so.  You can contact Heather at hmacdon2@connect.carleton.ca

ROCS Spring Session

New swimmers (kids age 6+) are welcome to join the Ravens of Carleton Swimming Spring Session.  The emphasis for all groups will be stroke and skill development while improving endurance. No meets are offered during this Spring Session as the swim year is winding down.  For more details contact Claudia Cronin-Schlote at rocswimming@gmail.com

Swimmer Notes

Birth Announcement:  Jennifer Evans (8:30am Earlybirds) is pleased to report the arrival of baby #2: Gwenith Mae Evans Bennett (Gwen for short) arrived May 3rd at 2:51am. Big sister Gillian is adjusting and happy to have a new little friend and future swimming buddy!  Pictures available at: http://www.thecorner.ca (who’s in the corner).  Jenn hopes to be back in the swim of things soon.

8:30am Earlybird Masters Spinning Class:  There are photos of last term’s Wed am spinning group posted at http://photogallery.carleton.ca/.  Select the “Recreation and Athletics” gallery, and then “Spinning”.  One of these photos (showing Susan N-Y, Renee, and Alan’s arm!) is on this term’s membership price list sheet.  I also had an e-mail from Tamara who was in charge of the filming of the 8:30am group on the last day of the Winter term.  She says that they enjoyed the filming, especially the shots of the swimmers in the bubbler, which they may use as an Athletics cover shot.  If the footage is used it may show up (eventually) on http://www.mycarleton.ca

Yellowknife Trip?!:  Heather Scott (Winter Whitecaps “A”) has returned to Yellowknife and passes along this message:  “I am involved with the Yellowknife Multisport Club and am organizing the 2006 Yellowknife Marathon.  Canadian North is offering discount airfares for participants.  If anyone has always wanted to travel to the North, participating in one of our events is a great excuse to do so!   Our races are fun community-based events that have courses through historic areas of Yellowknife and its beautiful surrounding area.  Our website is http://www.ykmultisport.com.”

Support Cancer Research and Coach Kristi:  On July 21-23, 2006, Kristi Dean will be participating in a very special event called The Weekend to End Breast Cancer.  She'll walk 60 kilometres over the course of one weekend with thousands of other women and men. The net proceeds will support breast cancer research, and services through the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.  She has agreed to raise at least $2,000, but has set her personal goal at $3,500.  More info at:
http://www.endcancer.ca/site/TR?px=1210135&s_redId=13435&fl=en_US&s_tafId=13970&pg=personal&fr_id=1160

Carleton Swim Suits:  Price is $70 for the women's suits ($55 for girl's) and $35 for the men's (cash or cheque payable to "Carleton University").  The men's suits range from size 28 to 38 (no 36s left).  The women's suits range from girl's size 22 to women's size 40 (no 24, 30, 36 or 38 left).  If you would like a suit, please e-mail me at least a day in advance to arrange a time (preferably when I am coaching) so that I can have the suits ready for you.

Sat Apr 8th Technosport Swim Meet

We are still awaiting the official results, which should eventually be available here: http://ca.geocities.com/technosport@rogers.com/results/results.htm.

Thu Apr 20 – Sun Apr 23rd Forester BIG SWIM for Arthritis

Full results (except that they don’t seem to be complete for the 5k) can be found at: http://www.bigswim.ca/view_results.htm.  Four Carleton swimmers took part:

1500m:

Margaret K (8:30am Earlybirds; 70+; Apr 21st at Carleton): 2nd in her age group and 38th overall in 53:26.  She raised $125.

2500m:

Jasmine T (Nightcaps; 20-29; Apr 23rd at Brewer): 4th in her age group and 21st overall in 49:10.

5000m:

Jen L (7:30am Earlybirds; Apr 23rd at Brewer): 1hr25min.  She raised $265.

Melanie S (Whitecaps “B”; Apr 23rd at Nepean Sportsplex): 1hr52min.  She raised $425.

Melanie swam beside Vincent Richer for his 8th 5k in 4 days.  She’d like to thank everyone who supported her with encouragement and pledges and also thanks Mits for his tips and good coaching.

Vincent R (Technosport; Apr 20-23rd at Nepean Sportsplex): Vincent swam two 3hr sessions each day to complete his 40k.  His 5k times ranged from 2hr41min to 2hr48min, except for one 2hr55min swim when they moved the bulkhead during his swim, which slowed him down.  Vincent raised over $4000!

Fri Apr 21 – Sun Apr 23rd Quebec Provincials (Claude Robillard, Montreal)

Four swimmers with Carleton affiliation swam at this meet, though just one (Rob) was swimming for Carleton.  Congratulations to Rob on 5 out of 6 season bests, and 4 club records!  The 50fs would also have been a season best (and club record) if Rob hadn’t had to slow down to ensure that his improperly tied suit finished at the same time as he did J !  Full results can be found at: http://www.samak.ca/bloc/060421-25-maitres/maitres.htm

Rob T (6:30/7:30am Earlybirds & Nightcaps, 50-54): 4th 100IM (1:27.04 club record); 5th 100br; 6th 50fs, 100fs (1:15.87 club record), 50fl (37.76 club record), 200IM (3:23.94 club record)

Larry D (8:30am Earlybirds, 65-69, OTTY): 1st 50bk, 100bk, 50bk, 100br, 200IM; 2nd 50fl

Danny F (Coach, 35-39, TECH): 1st 1500fs, 200bk, 200br, 200fl, 200IM; 3rd 50br; 5th 100fs

Alex B (Varsity Coach, 25-29, TECH): 1st 50fl, 50bk; 2nd 200IM; 4th 100fs (doing fly!)

Sat Apr 29 – Sun Apr 30th Manitoba Provincials (PanAm Pool, Winnipeg)

Coach Lynn took advantage of the Carleton pool closure to visit family in Winnipeg and participate in the Manitoba Masters Provincial Championships.  This meet had about 65 swimmers and was run in two 3hr sessions, compared to the 500+ swimmers and 2.5 full days at each of the Ontario and Quebec Provincials!  The only disadvantage was that there wasn’t much rest between events.  I was disappointed to miss the World Record by 0.09 in 200fs, but happy to get my first ever breaststroke Ontario record in 200br.  Full results at: http://msmanitoba.tripod.com/masters2006_results.pdf

Lynn (Coach, 45-49): 1st 100fs, 200fs (2:11.00 Nat Rec), 400fs (4:33.09 Nat Rec), 100bk (official split: 50bk 35.42 Ont Rec), 200br (3:04.92 Ont Rec), 50fl, 100fl (1:10.49 Nat Rec)

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Can you clarify when the Saturday workouts are?  It’s not clear from my receipt from Athletics.  Confused Swimmer

Dear C. Swimmer:  Saturday workouts are 8-9am OR 9-10am for May/June (no workout May 20th – Earlybird Triathlon using the pool).  Saturday workouts are 10-11am only for July/August (no workouts: July 1st – Canada Day, or Sept 2nd – Labour Day weekend).  There is child safety supervision on Saturdays from 9-10am in May/June but no child safety supervision on Saturdays in July/August.

Dear Coach:  I have a friend who is interested in Carleton Masters.  Can he/she try a workout for free?  Found a Potential Recruit

Dear F.a.P. Recruit:  I have a limited number of day passes for this purpose.  Potential swimmers are welcome to join any workout, as long as the group has space (so far, all Spring Masters groups have lots of space).

Also, if your copy of the newsletter does not arrive or is accidentally deleted, you can view all the old newsletters on the web site.

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: Are you interested in getting copies of Lynn's workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out two week’s worth of workouts on alternate Sundays.  (Note that these are only the workouts that Lynn coaches.  If Lynn is not your coach, the workouts will be different from the workouts your coach gives you!)

Weekly Social Events: All swimmers are invited to join us for:

- Thursday Dinner (after Whitecaps workout: all year)

- Thursday Drinks (after Nightcaps workout: Sept-Apr)
