Our Soon to be Famous Swimmers and Olympic Gold Medals!!

Carolyn Waldo, CJOH sports reporter and gold medalist in solo and duet synchronized swimming in the Seoul 1988 Olympics, was at the Carleton pool on Fri May 19th getting some footage and interviews of Margaret King and Florence Shinder (both 8:30am Earlybirds) for her weekly show on senior’s fitness which airs on Friday evenings around 6:30pm after the news.  Carolyn has promised to let us know when Flo and Margaret will debut as TV stars!  At Margaret’s request, Carolyn brought her Olympic gold medals and we all got to look at and hold them – quite the experience!  Thanks to Carolyn, Margaret, Flo and all the 8:30am Earlybirds for their cooperation.

Swim in the World Championships Pool!

A Masters meet is being held in the new outdoor pool built for last year’s World Championships in Montreal (Ile Ste Helene).  More details in the Masters Swimming Competitions section below.  This is your chance to race in a very fast pool!

Newsletter Delivery Problems

It seems that many of you are having problems getting the newsletter due to increasingly powerful spam detectors that are blocking some of your legitimate e-mail bulletins, like the newsletter.  If you hear one of your lane-mates complaining that they are no longer getting the e-newsletters, here’s a work around solution.  I have added a “change detection” button to the newsletter web page: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/anewsletter.html.  If you go to that page and enter your e-mail address, you will receive an e-mail whenever that web page changes, which is when I post a new newsletter.  That way you can read the newsletters on the web site without having to remember to check the web site regularly.

CUTCO Cutlery Presentations

Heather Macdonald (Varsity, ROCS Coach) has a summer job giving presentations of CUTCO cutlery.  The presentations take 40 to 60 min and can be given to any number of people as long as one of them is at least 30 years old.  She is paid for giving the presentations, regardless of whether there are any sales.  She’d like to get some experience as she’s new at this, so if you can help out by inviting her to give a presentation, please do so.  You can contact Heather at hmacdon2@connect.carleton.ca

ROCS Spring Session

New swimmers (kids age 6+) are welcome to join the Ravens of Carleton Swimming Spring Session.  The emphasis for all groups will be stroke and skill development while improving endurance. No meets are offered during this Spring Session as the swim year is winding down.  For more details contact Claudia Cronin-Schlote at rocswimming@gmail.com

Swimmer Notes

Birth Announcement:  Mike Sims (7:30am Earlybirds) reports that he and Elizabeth Burges-Sims (Winter Whitecaps “B”) had their first child, Seamus William Harry at 4:15am Sat May 13th.  Seamus weighed in at 7lb 5oz and has a long lean swimmer’s build!  Check out a photo of Seamus at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/aphoto.html, under Summer 2006.

Wedding Report:  Stephane R (Whitecaps “A”) attended the wedding of Beth Marshall (Whitecaps “B”) and Steve Morton (Whitecaps “A”) and sends this report:

Elizabeth and Stephen got married on Sat May 13th at the Glebe Community Center.  I was one of the lucky attendees.  I will try to describe the moment in meaningful swimming words. It all started in front of the board as usual, but this time, instead of “200 desc 1-4 Rev. IM” and other strange markings, it said “Steve and Beth Wedding”.  Quickly we all jumped in our lanes (of seats), and a lady starting giving instructions to the wedding party, not knowing her name I will refer to her as “The Official Lynn”…  The music kicked in, but it wasn’t the synchro swimming next door, but the arrival of the Bride at the rhythm of violins.  “Official Lynn” asked a few questions to Beth and Steve, and “I do”s were the answers.  It was quite a happy and emotional moment, with a lot of joyful tears!  Beth and Steve were married, celebrations could start!!!!  After a 3*100 Kir Royal, and 2*100 Champagne (it’s like a Kir with no Pull-Buoy), we all ended up at our table, where the meal started.  No offense to the Colonnade, Patty’s Pub, the Greek Souvlaki House and the Siam Kitchen, but Beth and Steve’s wedding were the place to eat!  Entertainment was provided by rhyme and singing from the audience that automatically triggered kisses from our favorite couple!!!  The “main set” also included Speeches, with an incredible sense of humor and emotions.  As part of the warm-down, we all then danced a few extra laps!!!  The evening was over, and the two birds flew to Mexico

There’s a photo of Beth and Steve at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/aphoto.html, under Summer 2006.

Swimmer Running for Leader of the Liberals:  Anita Manley (currently Whitecaps “B”, and 7:30am Earlybirds a couple of years ago) is running for Leader of the Liberal party.  She must raise $50,000 in individual donations and obtain 100 signatures from card carrying Liberals in Ontario in order to run officially.  If you are interested in supporting her please contact her at anita_m_manley@hotmail.com.  A website: http://www.AnitaManley.org should be up shortly.

Jim Lee back Swimming:  I’m very pleased to report that Jim Lee (x-7:30am Earlybirds) is back in the pool (along with his wife Debra) in the 8:30am group this term.  Jim suffered a stroke in January and is doing very well except for some vision problems which prohibit him from driving.

Evelyn at Dinner:  Evelyn Simpson (Whitecaps) is recovering well from her brain surgery and attended the weekly Whitecaps Thursday dinner on May 18th.  Her headaches and tiredness are diminishing and she hopes to be cleared by her doctor to get back to swimming fairly soon.

Lost and Found:  A black cap and blue goggles were accidentally picked up after the 7:30am Earlybirds workout on Wed May 10th.  Let me know if these are yours!

New Pull Buoy Straps:  My sister has made some new pull buoy straps, so we finally have all the Masters pull buoys back in service!

8:30am Coffee Report:  About 8 members of the 8:30am Masters met for coffee after workout on Fri May 12th.  Thanks to Margaret K for organizing this and to all for attending, especially Penny who is not swimming this term but made the trip to Carleton to give us a full report on her successful corrective eye surgery.

Hi from Josee L:  Debby W (Whitecaps “A”) reports that she ran into (not literally!) Josee Levesque (x-Carleton swimmer) while swimming at the Champagne pool during the shutdown.  Josee is still living in Quebec City and attempted to drop by Carleton to visit us as she was in town for a week, but found the pool drained!

Orpheus Choral Group Concerts:  Sean Kelly (6:30am Earlybirds) and Ursula Scott (Winter Whitecaps “B” / 6:30 Earlybirds) are performing with the Orpheus Choral Group (OCG) this spring.  Here are details about the 3 fundraising concerts the OCG is doing:

Spring Session Information

We are currently focusing on stroke drills and will be doing back drills this coming week and fly the week after.  There will be a timed 800/1500 for all swimmers in mid-June, as well as some opportunities for some timed sprints in both early and late June.

Here are the weekday attendance statistics for the first two weeks.  There are currently quite a few swimmers (24) with perfect weekday attendance.  Let’s see who can keep this up until the end of June!  For the first time ever, the 8:30am Earlybirds has the highest average attendance of all the groups.  A big thank you to the long-time members of that group who have done a great job of recruiting their friends!  Just a few years ago, it was unusual to have more than 1 swimmer per lane in that group.  Given that we have had both Carleton and TV photographers filming this group in the last month, it is obviously the group to join J !

Race Results: (Please send in your results!!)

Sat Mar 11th Technosport Swim Meet

At last the official results are up at: http://ca.geocities.com/technosport@rogers.com/results/mar11_06.htm.  Here’s a summary of the 10 CAPS and 1 OTTY swimmer who train at Carleton:

Anna P (25-29, Nightcaps): 2nd 50br, 100br (first meet!)

Elizabeth P (30-34, Nightcaps): 1st 100br; 2nd 50br; 3rd 100fs (first meet!)

Lynn (45-49, Coach): 1st 50fs (club record: 29.40), 100fs (Ont Rec: 1:03.59), 200fs, 50br, 200IM (Nat Rec: 2:34.87)

Bozena (50-54, Whitecaps “B”): 1st 50fs, 100fs, 50bk, 50br, 100br, 50fl (PB), 100fl (PB & club record: 2:05.69); 2nd 100bk

Margaret K (75-79, 8:30am Earlybirds): 1st 50fs (club record: 1:21.52), 100fs (club record: 2:58.86), 200fs (club record: 6:15.31), 50bk (club record: 1:42.90), 50br (club record: 1:53.41)

Gi (18-24, Whitecaps “A”): 1st 50fs, 100br, 50fl (PB)

Chad C (35-39, Whitecaps “B” / 7:30am Earlybirds): 2nd 100fs; 3rd 50bk, 50fl; 4th 200fs; 5th 50fs (first meet!)

Rob T (50-54, Earlybirds & Nightcaps): 1st 50fs (club record 32.83), 100fs, 200fs (club record 2:54.55), 50br

Note that as Rob’s 50fs official time is a little slower than we’d thought (32.7), his time at the Quebec Provincials of 32.81 was actually a club record, despite the improperly tied suit!

Andrew P (55-59, Whitecaps “B”): 1st 50br, 100br, 50fl (all just outside his club records)

George T (80-84, Whitecaps “B”): 1st 100fs, 200fs (club record 4:19.32), 50bk, 50br

Larry D (65-69, 8:30am Earlybirds swimming for OTTY): 1st 50bk, 50br, 50fl

Sat Apr 8th Technosport Swim Meet

We are still awaiting the official results, which should eventually be available here: http://ca.geocities.com/technosport@rogers.com/results/results.htm.

Sat May 13th Technosport Sprint LC Meet

Eleven of  the approximately 20 swimmers at this meet were affiliated with Carleton!  Nine were swimming for Carleton, plus one for OTTY and one for TECH.  As usual, it will likely be some time before the official results are posted at: http://ca.geocities.com/technosport@rogers.com/results/results.htm, so here is some preliminary information on how we did:

Vanessa (25-29, Whitecaps “B”): all best times: 50fs, 100fs, 50br

Lynn (45-49, Coach): Prov Rec: 100bk (1:17.5), 50fl (32.77); Nat Rec: 200fs (2:18.30), 100fl (1:11.56), 200IM (2:40.5)

Bozena (50-54, Whitecaps “B”): 6 events all in good times

Margaret K (75-79, 8:30am Earlybirds): 50fs, 100fs, 50bk and 100bk all in good LC times

Gi (18-24, Whitecaps “A”): best times in 50fs (30.7 – under 31 for the first time) and 50br
Aaron M (30-34, Whitecaps “A”): fast swims in 50fs and 50fl – overall winner in 50fs

Francois P (35-39, Whitecaps “A”): best times in 50fs and 50bk

Sean K (50-54, 6:30am Earlybirds): Club Rec: 100br (1:33.88), and very close in 50br (43)

We were all very impressed that Sean shaved his head for this meet, but it turns out the main reason was for a Russian gangster role in a play later that day!

Andrew P (55-59, Whitecaps “B”): swam breast and fly sprints

Larry (65-69, 6:30/7:30am Earlybirds swimming for OTTY): swam breast and back

Danny (35-39, Coach swimming for TECH): 7 events in fast times

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Where can I get prescription swimming goggles?  Squinting Swimmer

Dear S. Swimmer:  Some Sports Experts stores carry Speedo prescription goggles.  However, call ahead as they may not have a wide range.  Alternately, you can order them by mail order from Aquasport Montreal.  Check out the web page at: http://www.aquasport.ca/.  For goggles, look under catalogs and then accessories and should end up at: http://www.aquasport.ca/anglais/images/boutiques/equipe/Catalogue_2006_anglais_accessoires.pdf.  You want the “Aqua Racer Optical” which go from -2 to -9 diopters 8-750078 $24 (on page 2).  You can order by phone at 1-800-567-6660 as per the last page in that catalog.

Dear Coach:  How should I push off the wall when doing flip turns (distance, depth, angle, etc.)?  Working on my Turns

Dear W.o.m.T:  First ensure that you push off with your feet shoulder width apart and with you knees bent about the same amount as you’d bend them to jump up in the air if you were standing on the floor.  Your feet should be parallel to each other with the balls of your feet (but not your heels) touching the wall.  Your toes are pointing towards the ceiling (i.e. you are on your back).  Your feet should hit the wall a foot or two under the water (approximately at the depth of the horizontal part of the “cross” on the wall).  You should push off at a slight downwards angle (shoulders slightly lower than hips) to get a good deep push off.  Push off the wall hard and hold a tight streamline position until you feel yourself starting to slow down.  Then start your kick and use one strong arm stroke to get to the surface.  Ideally your first breath should be after one or two arm movements (or even further from the wall on a sprint).

Dear Coach:  How much and when should I roll on freestyle?  New Masters Swimmer

Dear N.M. Swimmer:  You should roll on every stroke on freestyle.  You want to aim to roll the same amount to each side regardless of whether or not you are breathing.  The roll should be 45-70 degrees.  Think about initiating the roll from your hips to ensure that your hips and shoulders roll an equal amount.

Dear Coach:  I swim 3-4 times per week and usually do weights twice.  How should I schedule my weights workouts in relation to my swims for maximum benefit?  Faster Stronger Swimmer

Dear F.S. Swimmer:  Doing weights will certainly help your swimming and fitness/strength over the long term.  However, keep in mind that weights will likely slow you down in the short term.  Thus you should avoid weights for a couple of weeks before any major competitions.  Few of us are able to schedule our workouts exactly as we’d like due to other commitments.  And many prefer to make fewer trips and thus do weights and swimming back-to-back.  If you do that, it’s better to swim after weights as swimming will help loosen up your muscles.  However, it is very hard to swim fast right after weights so you may need to lower your expectations.  If you do weights after swimming or on its own, ensure that you do lots of stretching during/after the weights to keep loose.  If you have a more flexible schedule and are willing to do weights on “off” days from swimming or at a different time of day from your swim, then that is even better.  You’ll likely find that the longer you have to recover after weights and before your next swim, the less the weights will affect your swimming.  As with anything, some variety (in the weights that you do, and the amount of time before your next swim) is good.  Comments and suggestions from the readers are welcome!

Spring/Summer Sessions

The Spring session started Mon May 8th.  Masters groups available for Spring/Summer are: 6:30am Earlybirds; 7:30am Earlybirds; 8:30am Earlybirds (May-June only); and 6pm Whitecaps.  You can sign up for Spring (May-June), Summer (July-August), or both.  Saturdays will be 8-9am OR 9-10am in May/June, and 10-11am ONLY in Jul/Aug.  Check the Masters web site (http://carletonmasters.tripod.com) and the Carleton web site (http://www.carleton.ca/athletics/programs/summer_programs/aquatics.html#masters) for full details and prices.  If you plan to swim in the Spring session, please register on-line or through the Customer Service office (520-4480, 8:30am-4:30pm M-F) as soon as possible, if you have not already done so.

Web Site Links and Newsletter Archive: Some swimmers reported that they had problems viewing some of the recent photos.  It's sometimes easier to access the web site pages, by going to the main page (http://carletonmasters.tripod.com) and then clicking on the link of interest (e.g. recent photos).

Also, if your copy of the newsletter does not arrive or is accidentally deleted, you can view all the old newsletters on the web site.

Newsletter: An e-newsletter (like this one) is sent out about every two weeks.  If you have new lane-mates, please mention to them that they should give their e-mail address to their coach if they'd like to receive it.

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: Are you interested in getting copies of Lynn's workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out two week’s worth of workouts on alternate Sundays.  (Note that these are only the workouts that Lynn coaches.  If Lynn is not your coach, the workouts will be different from the workouts your coach gives you!)

Weekly Social Events: All swimmers are invited to join us for:

- Thursday Dinner (after Whitecaps workout: all year)

- Thursday Drinks (after Nightcaps workout: Sept-Apr)

- Saturday Brunch (after 9-10am workout: Sept-Jun; after 10-11am workout: Jul-Aug)

Meet by the Control Desk after workout.

Triathletes: Check out Rudy Hollywood’s website: http://www.trirudy.com and subscribe to the daily tri-news e-mail.

General Information: Program information, photos, old newsletters and the Carleton Masters records, among other things, can be viewed at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com.

Your input to this newsletter is most welcome, especially for the Swimmer Notes, Race Results and Ask the Coach sections!  To be added to or removed from the receiver list, just let me know (lynnmarshall@sympatico.ca).

Happy lengths!
