End of Spring Session / Start of Summer Session

The Spring session ended Thu Jun 29th (Whitecaps) / Fri Jun 30th (Earlybirds).  The Summer session starts Mon Jul 3rd (even though this is a holiday for many of you!).  Note that in July/August, your choice of groups is as follows:

1. 6:30am Earlybirds 6:30-7:30am MWF + 10-11am Sat

2. 7:30am Earlybirds: 7:30-8:30am MWF + 10-11am Sat

3. 6pm Whitecaps: 6:00-7:10pm MTuTh + 10-11am Sat

Note that there is no 8:30am group in the Summer.  Also, Saturday workout is 10-11am ONLY, and there is no child safety supervision on Saturdays.  Finally, the sign up for Summer is separate from Spring, so if you are planning to swim in the summer and have not yet signed up, please do so!  You can register on-line (http://www.carleton.ca/athletics) or at the Customer Service desk in person or by phone (613-520-4480) 8:30am-4:30pm M-F.

Volunteers Needed: Kids of Steel Sun Jul 9th

I have volunteered to co-ordinate the swim for the Kids of Steel race at CFB Ottawa South (Huntclub near the airport) on Sun Jul 9th.  I need 4-6 volunteers to help me.  You are responsible for counting lengths (not very many, though!) and encouraging the kids.  It takes just a few hours (8:30-11:30am), and you get a T-shirt and food.  Let me know if you can help!  You can read more about the event at: http://www.ottawakidstri.ca/

Open Water Races (MSO Registration not Required) & Training for All

Technosport organizes two races in Meech Lake each summer.  There is a 3k in July and a 4k in August.  These swims are open to all, although if you wear a wet suit you are considered to be exhibition.  Details in the competitions section below.  For those interested in some open water swim training at Meech Lake, a group is getting together at Blanchet Beach (P13) at 6:15pm on Wednesdays.  (Note that these sessions are not official Carleton Masters workouts.)

Swimmer Notes

Flo on TV:  Flo Shinder (8:30am Earlybirds) was featured on CJOH TV’s fit seniors program at 6:30pm Fri Jun 23rd.  Unfortunately, as Flo was out of town we didn’t hear about this until after the fact.  Congrats to Flo on becoming a TV star!

Pools can be Hazardous to Children’s Lungs:  Thanks to Mary-Lou (6:30am Earlybirds) for bringing this Fri Jun 16th Globe and Mail article to my attention: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20060616.HASTHMA16/TPStory/?query=asthma

Support Cancer Research:  Two of our swimmers, Coach Kristi Dean, and Whitecaps “B” Suzanne Lalonde are participating in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer.  On July 21-23rd they will each walk 60km.  The net proceeds will support breast cancer research, and services through the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.  To participate, each has to raise at least $2000.  Kristi hopes to raise $3500.  You can check out their personal web pages:

Buy a Liberal Party Membership and Support Anita!:  Anita Manley (currently Whitecaps “B”, and 7:30am Earlybirds a couple of years ago) is running for Leader of the Liberal party.  You can support her by buying a Liberal Party Membership (cost around $10) at: http://www.liberal.ca.  You can contact her at anita_m_manley@hotmail.com.  A website: http://www.AnitaManley.org should be up shortly.

Carleton Swim Suits:  Price is $70 for the women's suits ($55 for girl's) and $35 for the men's (cash or cheque payable to "Carleton University").  The remaining men's suits range from size 28 to 34.  The women's suits range from girl's size 22 to women's size 34 (no 24 or 30 left).  If you would like a suit, please e-mail me at least a day in advance to arrange a time (preferably when I am coaching) so that I can have the suits ready for you.  I will have more suits in the fall as the Varsity order is going in shortly.  If you want to order a particular size, let me know ASAP.

Nose Clips for Sale:  Cost $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Time Trial and Relay Summary:

The information below on most improved and fastest swimmers is taken from the time trials done during the Spring session, and includes the relay splits from the end of term relays.  Times done in competitions are not included.  If your times are not listed here and you're curious, just e-mail me for details.  (I have all time trial times since May 2001.)

There were 26 women and 14 men who improved in at least one event!  Top overall was Sue D (8:30am Earlybirds) who improved her 100fs by 16.9 seconds!  She was followed closely by Ian L (6:30am Earlybirds) who improved his 50br by 16.0 sec/100m (8 sec).  In second place for the women was Andrea C (8:30am Earlybirds) who improved her 50fs by 11.6 sec/100m (5.8 sec).  Second for the men was Chris H (7:30am Earlybirds) who improved his 50br by 10.4 sec/100m (5.2 sec).  Third woman was Mae J (6:30am Earlybirds) who improved her 50fs by 8.2 sec /100m (4.1sec) and for the men, Dave B (7:30am Earlybirds) who improved his 100br by 7.3 seconds.  There were 7 other swimmers improving by more than 5sec per 100m in at least one event – great job all!

The International Point Scores (link to web page below) are used to determine the best swims.  There were 16 women (12 non-staff/Varsity) and 18 men (13 non-staff/Varsity) scoring 400 points or above in at least one event.  Five swimmers scored over 600 points.  J-F J (Varsity) led the way with 638 points for his 26.9 50fs.  Top female was Barb P with 614 for her 20:22 1500fs.  Second woman was Kelys M with 611 ponts for 31.1 in 50fs.  Heather M (Varsity) was next with a 1:17.6 100IM good for exactly 600points.  Third non-Varsity woman was Laura S (Whitecaps “A”) with 575 points for 33.7 50fl.  Top non-Varsity male was Steve N (6:30am Earlybirds) with 605 points for his 29.5 50fl.  Second male was Steve Morris (Whitecaps “A”) with 569 for 1:09.4 100IM and third was Don W (Whitecaps “A”) with 555 for a 19:27 1500fs.  Congratulations to all, especially those who made this list for the first time!

Sat Jul 1st 1er Festival Maitres Nageurs (LCM), Ile Ste-Helene, Montreal

Twelve Carleton swimmers attended this outdoor competition held at the 50m pool built for last year’s FINA World Championships.  Many of those in attendance had watched some of the swimming last year and wanted a chance to swim in this pool.  The meet was fairly well organized with a few growing pains that they can hopefully resolve in future (long lines to check in, $5 payment required to use the warm down pool, not much food at the “happy hour”, though lots of beer – not what’s needed after 10hrs in the sun before driving back to Ottawa!).  All in all a fun (but long) meet, though it is certainly challenging navigating on backstroke when swimming outdoors!  The team did a great job of getting each other’s splits and taking lots of photos (to be added to the web site when I get them!).  Full results not yet available, but here’s a summary…  (Results should eventually be available at: http://www.fnq.qc.ca.)

Melanie S (Whitecaps “B”, 18-24): Melanie did very well in her first swim meet, despite some goggle problems in the 50fs.  Her 50bk looked great!

Jill P (7:30am Earlybirds, 30-34): This was Jill’s first meet this year.  She also had a few goggle issues, but did some very good times, including a negative split in her 400fs!

Dawn W (7:30am Earlybirds, 40-44):  This was Dawn’s first meet in 3 years.  She looked very strong in all her events, especially the 400fs.

Lynn (Coach, 45-49):  Lynn set 2 Ontario records (50bk: 36.76 and 100fs: 1:04.91), and 2 National records (400fs: 4:43.39 and 200fl: 2:33.37; 4 and 2 seconds, respectively over the World records).

Gi (Whitecaps “A”, 18-24):  Gi’s times for all his events were all very close to his PBs.

Francois P (Whitecaps “A”, 35-39):  Francois looked good in his three 50m events, bk, fs and br.

Francois A (7:30am Earlybirds, 45-49):  Though Francois was a bit disappointed with some of his events, he finished in great style with a PB in 50br (faster than his SCM time!) and club record of 35.91!

Rob T (Earlybirds, 50-54):  Rob tried a couple of longer events this meet and looked strong.  His 50fs lead-off split on the last relay was only a few 10ths outside his SCM club record (33.1 vs 32.8).

Sean K (6:30am Earlybirds, 50-54):  Sean and Rob raced side by side in 400fs, with Sean pulling away a bit in the second half to get the club record in 6:41.60.

Jose V (6:30am Earlybirds, 50-54):  Jose’s did a very good 50fs and his 100fs was close to his recent best.

Andrew P (Whitecaps “B”, 55-59):  Andrew did an awesome 50br, beating his SCM time and setting a club record of 42.26.  This bodes well for Andrew’s trip to the FINA Masters Worlds at Stanford in August!

George T (Whitecaps “B”, 80-84):  George had some solid swims, though not quite as fast as he would have liked.  George enjoyed feeling like a youngster swimming against Eugene Lehman (93) and Roman Jezek (92)!

200+ Men’s Relay:  The team of Sean, Francois A, Andrew and Rob T set two club records for the 4x50MR (2:39.74), and 4x50FR (2:12.16).  The second time is especially impressive as it is 4 seconds faster than the time the old club record set by same team SCM in October, showing some great improvements this season!

The updated club records will be posted on the web site and bulletin board this week.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  I’m having problems understanding how to use the pace clock – help!!  Pace Clock Math Beginner

Dear P.C.M. Beginner: Don’t worry, it just takes practice to get the hang of pace clock math.  First, concentrate on the seconds.  It’s rare that you will be getting more than 1min of rest, so you can generally ignore the minutes.  Secondly, look over the pace times before you start and do some calculations ahead of time to help you remember when you will be leaving.  Easiest is pace times that are multiples of 1min (and thus 0 seconds).  If you start on the red 60 (i.e. when the red hand is at the top), you will always go on the red 60.  If the pace time is something ending in :30, and you start on the red top, you will alternate between the red top and red bottom (red 30).  If it ends in :15 you will rotate through red top, 15, bottom and 45.  It’s a bit more complicated for times that don’t easily divide into 60, but the same principle applies.  Ask your lane-mates or coach for more help, if required.

Dear Coach:  The swimmers in our lane aren’t all the same speed at all strokes.  What should we do in the main set?  New Masters Swimmer

Dear N.M. Swimmer:  Our goal during workout is for everyone to swim together.  Sometimes this doesn’t work out perfectly due to varying speeds among the swimmers.  However, the lane should always stay together.  Everyone should start together and continue to leave on the correct intervals (pace times) all through the main set.  If a swimmer falls too far behind, he/she should skip 50m and join back in with everyone else.  If you feel that you are getting too far ahead or too far behind your lane-mates on a regular basis, talk to your coach about whether there is a more suitable lane.

Dear Coach:  I know someone asked this before, but I can’t remember the answer.  What’s the difference between negative split and descend?  New to this Terminology

Dear N.t.t. Terminology:  Here are two sets: 4 x 200 fs d 1->4 and 4 x 200 fs neg sp.  In the first one, you would swim each 200 faster than the previous (for example: 3:25, 3:20, 3:15, 3:10).  In the second one, you would swim the second half (i.e. 100m) of each 200 faster than the first half (for example, each 200 could be swum as 1:40+1:35 = 3:15).  It is also be possible to descend and negative split at the same time.

Dear Coach:  Should I always use a kick board when we do kick?  Kicker

Dear Kicker:  It depends.  If you are kicking on your front (flutter, dolphin, breast) you can use a board if you like (you don’t have to).  If you are kicking on your back, don’t use a board – either put your arms straight above your head with your hands locked together or keep your hands at your side.  If you are kicking on your side, don’t use a board.
