Men’s Locker Room: Shower Area Repairs.

In order to replace some areas of floor tiles in the showers of the men's locker room, the front section of the shower area will be closed for a few days sometime in August.  The rear section of the shower area will be open for normal use.  Access to the pool deck will be via the stairway at the rear (left side) of the locker room.  We apologize for any inconvenience this required repair work may cause.

Swimmer Notes

Note from Ben Daniels:  I'd like to take this opportunity to inform everyone that as of the end of August 2006 I will be moving away from Ottawa (I haven't been deported, yet!!). My partner has a place in teachers college in Windsor for a one year course and I will be moving with her. It is unclear if we will ever return to Ottawa, although we would never rule it out. I have been in Canada now for four years, on and off and have swam with the Whitecaps as often as possible since 2003. I swam my first Masters meet in April and enjoyed every second of it, a highlight for me! I would like to especially thank Lynn Marshall for her dedication and help over the last few years.  I have always been made to feel welcome by all the coaches, swimmers and lifeguards and although I have not had the pleasure to met and swim with all of you, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all good luck in the future.  Many thanks.  Ben Daniels (Whitecaps “A”)

Ben:  Thanks for your kind words.  We’ll all miss you, especially your fast lane lane-mates!

Carleton Pool Bulkhead:  Swimmers are reminded that the bulkhead is off limits to swimmers during public swims.  Those Whitecaps “B” swimmers wanting to cross the bulkhead or set up their equipment before their deep end swims must wait until after the 5min warning bell before going on the bulkhead.  Thanks for your cooperation!

New Carleton (Non-)Smoking Policy:  As of August 1st, smoking is prohibited everywhere on campus with the exception of 21 designated smoking areas.  The nearest smoking area to Athletics is by P10 on the far (south) side of the ice house.  Check out the map at: http://www.carleton.ca/cu/campus.  The complete policy is available at: http://www.carleton.ca/secretariat/policies/Smoking%20Policy.htm

Trained Athletes and Blood Clots:  Here’s an article on the risk of blood clots in triathletes, along with steps to mitigate the risks: http://www.trifuel.com/triathlon/health/your-last-tri-race-clot-die-001509.php.

College Swimming in the US:  Here’s an article on what’s being done to prevent the cancellation of so many Varsity swimming programs in the US: http://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/lane9/news/11805.asp.

Basketball Fundraiser:  Carleton’s Women’s Basketball Team is holding a softball tournament on Sat Aug 26th at Brewer Park to raise funds for the team.  Cost is $325 per team (includes T-shirts for all players).  For more information contact Coach Christie Lauzon: christie_lauzon@carleton.ca

Race Journeys:  Looking for an interesting gift for that special (athletic) someone?  How about a poster with photos and their best race results?  Check out: http://www.racejourneys.com

Swim Smooth:  I heard that this group offers clinics similar to “Total Immersion” (http://www.totalimmersion.net), but that their prices are less expensive.  Other than that, I know nothing about this group.  However, you can check them out at: http://www.swimsmooth.com.  Some of the drills we do are based on the Total Immersion principles (I took one of their clinics in the 1990s).

Carleton Swim Suits:  Suits will be available in the October time-frame.

Nose Clips for Sale:  Cost $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Summer Session Information

Here's where you’ll find information on upcoming time trials, etc., plus an attendance summary and other notes.

Blake will be coaching Whitecaps “A” on Mondays for the rest of the summer, so that Lynn gets a chance to swim!  Thanks, Blake!

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Why can’t I pay for the whole year of Masters swimming at once, like at most other clubs?  Please Take My Money!

Dear P.T.M. Money:  It’s not currently feasible to set prices for a whole year at a time due to variables such as the annual shutdown (April/May).  However, as the Fall and Winter prices are set in the summer, paying for these two terms at the same time may be a possibility for the future.  I’ve passed along this suggestion for consideration for Fall 2007.

Dear Coach:  Someone recommended Swedish-style goggles and I find them very uncomfortable.  Do you have any other suggestions for good racing goggles?  Masters Competitor

Dear M. Competitor:  The type of goggles that works for you depends very much on your face structure (width and depth of eyes, width and height of nose bridge, etc.).  Some love the Swedish style, but others hate them.  Just about any type of goggles is fine for racing, it just depends on what is most comfortable for you.  When you try goggles (out of the water), you want to be able to press the eye pieces to your face and have them stay on without the strap (that shows that the eye pieces are the right distance apart and that there is a good seal).  If you get goggles with an adjustable nose piece they are more likely to fit.  I have a bag of old goggles (lost and found) that I bring to each workout.  If you wanted to try some of those, that might give you an idea of what works for you.

Dear Coach:  I discovered a great reason for looking down at the bottom of the pool (instead of forward) while swimming.  I found $7.25 on the bottom of the pool this morning!!  Now I Can Buy a Big Breakfast

Dear N.I.C.B.a.B. Breakfast:  Not only does this technique make you rich J , it also helps you swim in a more streamlined position and puts less pressure on your neck.

Polyester Suit Follow-Up from the last newsletter:

Dear Coach:  Do you know if there’s any store in Ottawa that stocks polyester (long-life) training suits?  Need New Suit

Dear N.N. Suit:  I don’t know any stores in Ottawa, but Aquasport in Montreal has a wide range (http://www.aquasport.ca).  Maybe some of our readers can help?

Thanks to our readers for the following suggestions for N.N. Suit:

From Lisa B (Nightcaps): Polyester blend suits are available at Forbie Active Wear (Westboro).

From Flo (7:30am Earlybirds):  Brio (Ottawa) carries some polyester suits.

Also, the Carleton Pool Staff recently ordered suits from Splish: http://www.splishwear.com/index.html.
