Fall Masters Coaching Changes

Due to Louise getting a new position as a facilitator with the Ontario Citizen's Assembly in Toronto, which is in addition to her regular job and involves a conference call on Thursday evenings, Louise will be unable to continue coaching Nightcaps.  Mits has kindly accepted this role.  A big thank you to Louise for all the Nightcaps coaching she has done!  Thus, the regular Masters coaches for Fall/Winter 06-07 will be Mits (Whitecaps “B”, Nightcaps) and Lynn (Earlybirds, Whitecaps “A”).  In addition, there are five substitute and Saturday coaches for 06-07: Blake, Claudia, Louise, Kristi and Tim.  Many thanks to Heather and Danny for all their help with Carleton Masters over the years!

Fall / Winter 2006-2007 Session Information

Some groups may fill up for Fall, so please register now to avoid disappointment!

Note that High Intensity Masters is for those who can repeat 100s free on 1:45 or better and 100s of other strokes on 2:00 or better.  (High Intensity Group 1 is full.)

Men’s Locker Room: Shower Area Repairs.

In order to replace some areas of floor tiles in the showers of the men's locker room, the front section of the shower area will be closed until Wed Sept 7th.  The rear section of the shower area will be open for normal use.  Access to the pool deck will be via the stairway at the rear (left side) of the locker room.  We apologize for any inconvenience this required repair work may cause.

Tentative Whitecaps Fall Set Up

This Fall session, we will have 11 lanes for Whitecaps, as the ROCS club will be using the deep end lane nearest the diving well.  Mits and I have discussed this, and come up with a tentative plan.  Mits will coach the Whitecaps “B” group in the shallow end (6 lanes).  The fastest lane on the “B” side will do aerobic 100s free on 1:50 and 100s choice / IM on 2:05.  I will coach the “A” group in the deep end (5 lanes).  The slowest lane on the “A” side will do aerobic 100s free on 1:45 and 100s choice / IM on 2:00.  Note that this may need to be modified, based on the speed of the swimmers that register for Whitecaps, but it should be about right!  It might take us a few workouts to get the lanes sorted to everyone’s satisfaction, so please be patient and flexible.  I’ve had a request that for 06-07, the fastest Whitecaps “A” lane swim next to the wall (instead of near the diving well) this year, so we’ll try that, too.

Swimmer Notes

Swimming Technique Links:  Blair Christie (Winter Whitecaps “A”) was kind enough to send some good links on swimming technique, related to the question last time on the “S”-stroke.  See the “Ask the Coach” section.  Thanks, Blair!

Ravens of Carleton Swimming Information:  The Ravens of Carleton Swimming Club offers learn to swim, developmental and competitive programs for swimmers ages 6 and over. Many programs are offered for swimmers of all abilities. These include: swimming and water exercises for high school students designed to improve swimming skills and fitness for teens involved in various school sports; adult programs designed for learn to swim types or people preparing for triathlons; and developmental programs designed for children who are just starting their swimming “adventure”.

All programs are offered out of the centrally located Carleton University pool. New swimmer assessments will take place September 12th from 6:00-7:10 pm, 13th from 7:30-8:30 pm and 14th from 6:00-7:10 pm at the Carleton University pool. Please call John Hawes (Co Head Coach) at 613-836-9303 to book a private assessment. You can also connect to book an assessment via email at rocswimming@gmail.com  Please visit our website at http://www.rocs.ca for more details.

Gefilte Fish Swim Club Information:  GFSC invites swimmers ages 6 and up to join their developmental and competitive swim club based out of the Soloway JCC, Brewer, and University of Ottawa pools. (Developmental and pre-competitive still at SJCC.) We attract swimmers who want to learn competitive skills (winner of the 2005 High Point, Small Team regional award), triathletes (current and past winners of Kids of Steel events) who want to improve overall conditioning, and kids who enjoy aerobic-based activities.

Attend the New Swimmer Evaluation either Tuesday, September 5 or Thursday, September 7 from 4:30-5:30 pm (non to pre-competitive) or 5:30-6:00 pm (Competitive). Bring your parent and meet at the SJCC *outdoor* pool (West End of Ottawa at Carling/Broadview).

Full details of our program are available at http://www.anzai.com/gfsc or contact Tom Anzai at (613) 722-5487 or tom@anzai.com.

Tim Horton’s Hours:  The new Athletics Tim Horton’s is now open 7am-10pm M-F and 8am-3pm (possibly to be extended to 8pm) on weekends.

Parking Lot 5 Notes:  If you have a parking permit for Parking Lot #5, you must park in the back part of the lot (not in the “pay and display” area).  Parking services started issuing $35 tickets this week to permit holders parked in the “pay and display” area.  I believe that the barricade to the permit holders part of the lot will be in use shortly.  To enter the lot, hold your parking permit hang tag in front of the card reader.  (You do not need to use your hang tag to exit.)  If any of you still have your old (now obsolete) swipe card, you can get a $10 refund at customer service.

Date for Carleton Alumni Diaries:  If you swam or played water polo for Carleton please make note of the “Aquatic Alumni Nite” to be held Sat Nov 4th.  It will run 4-9pm with men’s and women’s water polo games (4-7pm), plus a swim meet (7-9pm).  Please pass this information along to any alumni you know!

Carleton Swim Suits:  Suits will be available in the October time-frame.

Nose Clips for Sale:  Cost $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Time Trial and Relay Summary:

The information below on most improved and fastest swimmers is taken from the time trials done during the summer session, and includes the relay splits from the end of term relays.  Times done in competitions are not included.  If your times are not listed here and you're curious, just e-mail me for details.  (I have all time trial times since May 2001.)

There were 25 women and 23 men who improved in at least one event!  Six swimmers improved by at least 7.5sec per 100m.  Most improved overall was Sandra A (VEB) improving by 14.6 sec/100m (29.2sec) in 200fs.  Next was Ana B (WCA) improving by 12.6 sec/100m (6.3sec) in 50fs.  The top man was Amir (EB1) who improved by 9.8sec in 100fs.  He was followed by Ian L (VEB) and Gi (WCA) who improved their 100br by 8.7 and 8.3, respectively.  Rounding out the top 3 for the women was Jennifer S (WCB) who improved her 800fs by 7.5sec/100m (1min exactly).  Congratulations to all who improved, especially those who improved in multiple events.  Special mention to Jim L (EB1) who improved his 200fs time this term, compared to his time from a couple of years ago.  This is quite remarkable as Jim had a stroke in January!

The International Point Scores (link to web page below) are used to determine the best swims.  There were 15 women (11 non-staff/Varsity) and 26 men (16 non-staff/Varsity) scoring 400 points or above in at least one event.  Eight swimmers scored over 600 points.  The fastest swim was Steve K (WCA)’s 50fs of 25.9 or 696 points.  Next was Varsity swimmer Sean D with 679 for his 57.5 100fs.  Steve Morris (WCA) and J-F (Varsity) both did 26.9 for 50fs (638 points).  Next was Jamie S (VEB) with a great 18:31 1500fs for 626 points.  Steve N (VEB) did a very impressive 2:27.3 200IM worth 620 points.  Ben D (WCA) earned 605 points for his 1:00.4 100fs.  Rounding out those over 600 was Kelys M (WCA) with 601 for her 2:29 200fs.  The other top women were Melanie (who came to try WCA on the last day of the session) with an impressive 33.6 50fl (579).  Next was Barb P (EB1) with 1:11.8 100fs (534).  Jenna (WCA / pool staff) earned 523 points for a very solid 41.3 50fr, and Laura S (WCA) got 514 points for a 1:12.9 100fs, just ahead of Lisa S (WCA) who did 1:13.0 for 512 points.  Congrats to all who made this exclusive list!

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  What is in your ear drops?  Water in my Ear

Dear W.i.m. Ear:  My drops are a mixture of mostly rubbing alcohol with a bit of hydrogen peroxide (vinegar instead of peroxide will work equally well).  The idea is that the alcohol makes any water left in your ears evaporate and the peroxide/vinegar changes the pH so that nothing will grow (i.e. no infections).  I suggest first buying a bottle of ear drops from the pharmacy, and then reusing the plastic bottle with your home-made drops.

Dear Coach:  Why do you get so annoyed when you give me stroke correction and I tell you that it doesn’t matter because I was just swimming easy?  Curious Swimmer

Dear C. Swimmer:  The best time to practice your technique is when you are swimming at a slower speed.  You should never sacrifice your technique, and especially not on easy swims.

Dear Coach:  I don’t think you emphsized enough in just how destructive the S-stroke advice can be.  In swimming slow and inefficiently, the S-stroke has in fact been very important in swimming!

There can be no more destructive influence aside from long slow distance swimming that has destroyed and continues to destroy Canadian swimmers chances at beating the rest of the world at the Olympics more than the emphasis of the S-stroke by Canadian coaches and the lifeguard association.

Ideas on best technique are here at 2 respected swimming sites.

   http://sportsci.org/news/biomech/skeptic.html

".. Rather than swimmers adducting the arm to produce the "insweep" and then abducting to produce the "outsweep", as is commonly demonstrated by coaches when instructing on poolside, the swimmers are actually reducing the curve by abducting in the early part of the pull and adducting during the latter part of the pull. The fact that swimmers attempt to straighten the path rather than to use sculling actions is strong indirect evidence that swimmers rely on drag forces rather than lift forces. .."

   http://www.swimmingcoach.org/articles/JL06132002.asp

"..The idea that world-class swimmers take the time to fine tune the pitch of the hand, search for still waters, sweep down, sweep out, sweep in, or sweep up during the propulsive phase of their strokes is not an accurate description of the stroke. .."

".. The athlete can envision and feel the importance of adduction and the power of that movement. It is also easy to see the futility and ineffective nature of S curves and sweeping actions that use the smaller muscles of the arm and forearm to accomplish the task. A sweep or S curve stroke is not an effective way."
