Upcoming Cancellations

Workouts run as usual on Sat Oct 7th.  However, note that there will be no Masters workouts on Mon Oct 9th (Thanksgiving).

High Intensity swimmers can swim at the Varsity workout on Mon Oct 9th from 3:30-5:30pm free of charge.  Any other Masters swimmers who can do 100s free/IM on 1:45/2:00 or better may also attend this workout for $3 (please pay the coach on deck).

Note that morning members have access to the facilities all day on Thanksgiving Monday, and there is a public swim from 11:45am-3:30pm.

Note that the Sat 5-7pm workout for High Intensity group 3 is cancelled on Sat Oct 14th and Sat Oct 28th, due to travel to Varsity swim meets.  (The 8-9am and 9-10am regular Masters workouts run as usual on these days.)

E-Mail List Clean-Up

Over the next few weeks I will be doing the annual clean up the e-newsletter e-mail lists.  If you are not going to register for Fall Masters but you want to continue receiving the e-newsletter as an “alumnus”, please send me an e-mail.  Those who have not registered for Masters or responded via e-mail will be removed from the e-list in the mid-October time-frame.

MSO Registration (extended to Monday!) and Fall Meets

Those swimmers interested in competing in Masters swimming competitions between now and Dec 31st, 2007, should bring me $25 (plus provide name, address, phone number and date of birth) by Mon Oct 2nd.   More details under Masters Swimming Competitions below.

Swimmer Notes

Hi from Beth:  For those who remember Beth K (x-Whitecaps “B”), I saw her last weekend when she was swimming in public swim.  She was in town for Rosh Hashanah and reports that she’s expecting baby #2 in November, when their first will be almost 5.

Brossard Swim Meet:  Rob T (HI 1 & 2; r-trimbee@usa.net) is planning to attend this meet on Oct 28th and is willing to provide a lift for anyone else who is attending.  Please contact Rob directly.

Cycling Prohibited for 8:30am Earlybirds!?:  Some time back a group of 8:30am swimmers were nearly hit by lightning when they were out cycling.  Now in the past 10 days, two have been involved in bike accidents.  Sue D broke her collar bone getting out of the way of a City of Ottawa truck on a bike path, and Margaret K broke her arm when she was blown off her bicycle by the strong winds last Sunday.  The rest of the group has been warned to stick with swimming (it’s safer!).

Alex Baumann Returning to Canada:  Alex Baumann, swimming gold medalist at the 1984 Olympics and world record holder, is returning to Canada to head the COC’s Road to Excellence program (a push for more medals at the Summer Olympics).  See: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/story/2006/09/26/baumann-canada.html

FINA World Masters Article:  For those interested in reading about August’s FINA World Masters Championships held in Stanford, check out: http://www.usmsswimmer.com/200609/feature.pdf

Date for Carleton Alumni Diaries:  If you swam or played water polo for Carleton please make note of the “Aquatic Alumni Nite” to be held Sat Nov 4th.  It will run 4-9pm with men’s and women’s water polo games (4-7pm), plus a swim meet (7-9pm).  Please pass this information along to any alumni you know!

Carleton Swim Suits:  The new Carleton swim suits are here (same style as last year).  They are polyester (long lasting).  Men’s suits are available in sizes 28-40 (they fit small – you may want to go up a size).  Cost is $35.  Women’s suits are available in sizes 26-40 (they fit large – you may need to go down a size).  Cost is $55.  Contact me via e-mail if you are interested in a suit and let me know your approximate size.  You can pay by cash or cheque payable to “Carleton University”.

Nose Clips for Sale:  Cost $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Ravens of Carleton Swimming Club:  ROCS offers learn to swim, developmental and competitive programs for swimmers ages 6 and over. The club has very low swimmer to coach ratios and strives to bring out each swimmer’s maximum potential. Even though the club has an excellent competitive program, many programs are offered for swimmers of all abilities.  All programs are offered out of Carleton University. Please visit our website at http://www.rocs.ca for more details.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:   Can you please remind me of the difference between build and descend?  Forgetful Swimmer

Dear F. Swimmer:  When you are asked to build, you gradually increase the intensity within a repeat.  When you are asked to descend, you do a series of repeats with each repeat at a higher intensity than the previous one.

Dear Coach:  If I forget to bring my cap and goggles, is there any way to borrow some?  Another Forgetful Swimmer

Dear A.F. Swimmer:  I always have a bag of spare caps and goggles and the pool office usually has some spare goggles, too.

Newsletter: An e-newsletter (like this one) is sent out about every two weeks.  If you have new lane-mates, please mention to them that they should give their e-mail address to their coach if they'd like to receive it.

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: Are you interested in getting copies of Lynn's workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out two week’s worth of workouts on alternate Sundays.  (Note that these are only the workouts that Lynn coaches.  If Lynn is not your coach, the workouts will be different from the workouts your coach gives you!)

Weekly Social Events: All swimmers are invited to join us for:

- Thursday Dinner (after Whitecaps workout: all year)

- Thursday Drinks (after Nightcaps workout: Sept-Apr)

- Saturday Brunch (after 9-10am workout: Sept-Jun; after 10-11am workout: Jul-Aug)

Meet by the Control Desk after workout.
