Constanza Alvarado (x-Whitecaps “A”) got married in June and has moved to St Catharines as her husband in teaching at Brock University.  She’s joined Brock Masters and is getting back in shape after being out of the pool for a while.  She’s still working for the federal government and is in Ottawa at least one week per month.

Speedy Recovery Wishes:  Another 8:30am Masters swimmer went cycling and had a spill!  Susan Nevitt-Yelle will be out of the water for a couple of weeks recovering from road rash and a separated shoulder.  Margaret King (broken arm) and Sue Dzioba (broken collar bone) will be out of the pool for a while yet.

Ravens of Carleton Swimming Club:  ROCS offers learn to swim, developmental and competitive programs for swimmers ages 6 and over. The club has very low swimmer to coach ratios and strives to bring out each swimmer’s maximum potential. Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:   Can you explain the difference between all the Masters groups and High Intensity?  Which groups have coaching?  Which group do I have to be in to compete?  New Swimmer

Dear N. Swimmer:  Welcome to Carleton Masters!  All the regular Masters groups cater to a wide range of abilities.  Anyone who can swim at least 1000m in an hour and who already knows the basics of at least two of the four competitive strokes can join.  The High Intensity groups are open to approximately the top half of our Masters swimmers (you must be able to do 100s free/IM on 1:45/2:00 to join).  That said, the regular Masters groups also cater to the faster swimmers.  All the groups have coaches who provide you with a workout and stroke correction.  Feel free to ask your coach for more feedback if you want it.

You should join the group that best fits your schedule.  Swimmers in all groups can compete for Carleton University’s Masters team, though it’s certainly not required to compete.  The MSO registered team is officially called “Carleton University Masters Whitecaps” for historical reasons (Whitecaps used to be the only group), but you do not have to be a member of the 6pm Whitecaps group to compete.

Dear Coach:  Can you go over the rules for backstroke turns?  Still Learning

Dear S. Learning:  Sure.  For a backstroke turn (going from one length of backstroke to another), there are two possibilities.  You can do a flip turn or an open turn.  If you choose to do a flip turn, you are permitted one stroke on your stomach as part of a continuous turning movement where you touch the wall only with your feet.  If you prefer an open (non-flip) turn, then you must touch the wall with any part of your body (note that hand is preferred, but head is ok!) while still on your back.  In both cases, you must leave the wall on your back.  Between touching the wall and leaving the wall, anything is permitted (you can turn on your front).  If you are finishing a backstroke race, you must touch the wall on your back (as for an open turn above).  If you are doing a backstroke-to-breaststroke turn, it is considered a backstroke finish, so you are not permitted to do a flip turn.  Note that on your back is anything up to 89.9 degrees turned either to your left or right.  Once you pass 90 degrees, you are considered to be on your front.  Ask your coach for a demo or clinic!

Dear Coach:  I want to learn flip turns?  Will we get a chance to do that?  Improving Swimmer

Dear I. Swimmer:  As soon as we finish all the stroke drills (very soon!), we’ll do some turn clinics.  Just remind your coach!

Dear Coach:  How do I do a flip turn with a pull buoy?  New Flip Turn Swimmer

Dear N.F.T. Swimmer:  There’s very little difference between a regular flip turn and a flip turn with a pull buoy.  You just have to ensure that you keep your feet a little closer together when they hit the wall, so that the pull buoy doesn’t pop out!

Dear Coach:  What’s a good push off?  Another New Swimmer

Dear A.N. Swimmer:  Welcome to Carleton Masters!  Whenever you push off the wall (on all strokes, including backstroke!) you should be completely submerged and in a streamlined position.  Ask your coach for a demo.  You should be underwater for (at least!) the first 5m of each length.  For fly, back and free, you are permitted to stay underwater for 15m of each length.  For breast, you are permitted to stay underwater during the breast-stroke pull-out (no matter how far you can go, though getting further than 15m is a challenge!).
