MSO AGM Recap

Thanks to Angela Davis (Whitecaps “B”) who attended the MSO AGM and sends this summary:

Master Swim Ontario had its Annual General meeting in Ottawa on October 21.  I attended and registered as a Carleton University Master Swimmer.  I have only been swimming with you since September and enjoy the swimming here a lot.

In the treasurer's report, the fees of $25 were explained as $10 to Masters Swimming Canada (MSC) and $2 is for Swim Ontario, the organization that supports children's competitions, mostly.  Money has been spent on supporting officials going to World's and setting up a data base, in conjunction with MSC. The Million Meter Challenge was their project which we supported.

No new members joined the board so MSO is looking for two new members, preferably in Toronto and Western Ontario as Ottawa is well represented.

You can check http://www.mastersswimmingontario.ca for more information.

Varsity Swim Team Fundraiser: Carleton Night with the Senators: Tue Jan 30th

Would you like to see the Ottawa Senators take on the Washington Capitals on Tue Jan 30th at a reduced price and support Carleton’s Varsity Athletes?  Tickets start at $45.  Ask for a brochure or take one from the Varsity swim bulletin board, or go to: http://www2.capitaltickets.ca/eng/promos.cfm and then enter SENGRPCAR, and then click on Washington Capitals inside the red box.  Under seating preferences comments, add that you want to support the “swim team”, or the money will go to the general Varsity fund.

Waiting Lists

For anyone interested in the 7:30am Earlybirds or the 6:00am High Intensity Group #1, I am maintaining waiting lists for these groups.  Contact me to be added to the list.

Swimmer Notes

Engagement:  Congratulations to Lisa Hans (x-Whitecaps) on her recent engagement to Steve Garten.

Swimmers on the Move:

Matt Takach (x-7:30am Masters) and his wife Kelly have recently moved out to Victoria BC.  Matt is now swimming with the Victoria Masters Swim Team out of the Crystal Pool.  Anyone looking to stay in touch with Matt can email him at: matt.takach@gmail.com.  Matt reports that there are palm trees outside the pool he’s swimming at, and that the weather has been great!  Unfortunately, he won’t be back to visit (gloat!?) until early 2007.

Lisa Okun (x-Earlybirds / Whitecaps “B”) sends this update.  My travels in Italy were molto molto bene, and not long enough, but I´ll go back.  In 5 weeks I went from Sicily to Venice and then back to Rome in the end.  It was really lovely and amazing, with lots of gelatto and sunshine.  I arrived in Spain on Oct 11th, and have managed to settle in pretty well in Malaga.  Really enjoying my Spanish classes, and looking forward to being able to speak like a regular person as opposed to a 3 year old with a learning disability.

Baby Photos:  Jocelyn Lavoie (x-Whitecaps “A”) sent a couple of (swimming related) recent photos of baby Georgia: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/06fall/.

Speedy Recovery Wishes:  Karen Jensen (x-6:30am Earlybirds) sends her best wishes to the 8:30am Earlybirds currently out of the pool due to bike accidents (Margaret King, Susan Nevitt-Yelle, and Sue Dzoiba).  She had a pretty serious bike accident 3 years ago (fractured her scapula, dislocated and fracture clavicle, and torn rotator cuff).  However, she reports that if you stick to your physiotherapy, you may be back in the pool sooner than you think.  (She was off for six months.)

Date for Carleton Alumni Diaries:  If you swam or played water polo for Carleton please make note of the “Aquatic Alumni Nite” to be held Sat Nov 4th.  It will run 4-9pm with men’s and women’s water polo games (4-7pm), plus a swim meet (7-9pm).  Please pass this information along to any alumni you know!

Carleton Swim Suits:  The new Carleton swim suits are here (same style as last year).  They are polyester (long lasting).  Men’s suits are available in sizes 28-40 (they fit small – you may want to go up a size).  Cost is $35.  Women’s suits are available in sizes 26-40 (they fit large – you may need to go down a size).  Cost is $55.  Contact me via e-mail if you are interested in a suit and let me know your approximate size.  You can pay by cash or cheque payable to “Carleton University”.

Nose Clips for Sale:  Cost $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Ravens of Carleton Swimming Club:  ROCS offers learn to swim, developmental and competitive programs for swimmers ages 6 and over. The club has very low swimmer to coach ratios and strives to bring out each swimmer’s maximum potential. Even though the club has an excellent competitive program, many programs are offered for swimmers of all abilities.  All programs are offered out of Carleton University. Please visit our website at http://www.rocs.ca for more details.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:   I often have a hard time finding the right lane to swim in.  I’ve tried moving up a lane, but I sometimes fall behind.  What should I do?  In-Between Swimmer

Dear I-B. Swimmer:  It would be nice if we had more lanes in the pool!  If you are regularly not able to make the pace times (or not without compromising the workout, e.g. not descending, building, etc.), then you will likely get a better workout in a slower lane.  If you find that you are only sometimes struggling to keep up, you may want to try switching back and forth between two lanes depending on the theme of the workout.  Some swimmers are better at free, some at IM, some at longer distances, etc.  In any case, ensure that you discuss your concerns with your coach.

Dear Coach:   Where should my toes point when I push off the wall on a flip turn?  Improving My Turns

Dear I.M. Turns:  Your toes should point straight up, and you should push off the wall on your back (rolling onto your side only after you push off).

Dear Coach:  Is it legal to do double-arm backstroke in a race?  A Backstroker

Dear A. Backstroker:  Yes.  As long as you are on your back, any stroke (including elementary backstroke) is permitted.   For most, regular (1-arm at a time) backstroke is faster, but slower swimmers with a good whip kick may find that double-arm backstroke works for them.

Dear Coach:  Is it legal to do one-arm fly in a race?  Wanna-be Flyer

Dear W. Flyer:  No!  (Well, ok, it is legal if you have only one arm!)  For those with two arms, the butterfly stroke must be raced with symmetrical arm movements.  Note also that on fly it is illegal to move your hands forward under the water.  Thus, ensure that you don’t start a stroke and then change your mind when nearing the wall for a turn or the finish.

Dear Coach:  Can you go over the back to breast turn rules again?  Still Confused

Dear S. Confused:  Sure.  The back to breast turn is considered a backstroke finish, followed by breaststroke.  Thus, you must touch the wall on your back on a back to breast turn.  You cannot do a flip turn between back and breast in an IM.  Ideally you want to do a bucket turn – ask your coach for a demo or explanation.
