Swimmer Notes

Swimmer Moving:  Our best wishes to Andrea Mattiussi (Whitecaps “B”) who is relocating to Toronto this month.  Keep in touch!

The Fifth Stroke: Dolphin Kick: The power of Michael Phelps dolphin kicks off the wall is truly phenomenal!  You can watch some clips from the FINA World Championships on the CBC web site: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/aquatics/video.html.  (Thanks to Nicole Le Saux [7:30am Earlybirds] for this link.)  He gets over 10m from the wall on his underwater push-off.  The lead he gets on his competitors is especially noticeable in the 200fs.  You can also read an article on this at: http://www.swimnews.com/News/displayStory.jhtml?id=5202

Matt Hawes Canadian Record: Matt Hawes, son of John Hawes (ROCS & Varsity Coach), set a Canadian Record for 200m backstroke (LCM) of 1:58.64 at the recent Canadian National Championships and Pan-Am Game Trials.  This time would have made the final at the FINA World Championships.  See: http://www.swimming.ca/swimming/index_e.aspx?ArticleID=4118.

Painful Swimming: The swimmers participating in the open water races at the FINA World Championships in Melbourne had to fight their way through a lot of jellyfish: http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/swimming/news/story?id=2805147&campaign=rss&source=ESPNHeadlines.  Ouch!  Thanks to Jamie (6:30am Earlybirds) for sending this in.

Slow Swimming:  An amusing swimming video “Lee Evans – Swimming” sent in by Laura (Whitecaps “A”): http://youtube.com/watch?v=Y-J5jV7A9w0

Jeno “Doc” Tihanyi Memorial: There was a big turnout for Doc’s memorial service, see: http://www.northernlife.ca/News/LocalNews/2007/03-09-07-TihanyiTOP.asp?NLStory=03-09-07-TihanyiTOP

Big Swim for Arthritis: Several Carleton swimmers participated in this April fundraiser last year.  Full details for this year are at: http://www.bigswim.ca/.  Vincent Richer from Technosport (who last year swam 10k per day [in two 5k sessions] for 4 days and raised $4000 for his 40km effort) this year plans to swim 100km over 10 days!  See his web site at: http://www3.sympatico.ca/vricher/.  However, you don’t have to be that crazy!!  Participants can swim individual 30 minutes, 1000m, 2500m or 5000m swims, or swim on their own by registering to the Log Your Laps challenge. The Log Your Laps challenge is the most flexible of the challenges because it allows participants to complete a challenge at their convenience using local pool facilities of their choice. There is also a team 5000m challenge and a one hour aqua-fit challenge. A registration fee of $25 is collected in order to participate in an event, but if you chose to raise funds and successfully raise $75 or more, your registration fee is waived.  Margaret K (8:30am Earlybirds) plans to participate.  Anyone else?

Weekend to End Breast Cancer:  Kristi Dean (Coach) is participating in this 60km walk on Jun 2-3rd.  She aims to raise $5000 (last year she raised over $3500) for breast cancer research.  If you’d like to read more about this fundraiser or sponsor Kristi, see: http://www.endcancer.ca/site/TR?px=1813772&pg=personal&fr_id=1180.

Carleton Swim Suits:  These are polyester training suits (long lasting).  Men’s suits are available in sizes 28-32 and 36 (they fit small – you may want to go up a size).  Cost is $35.  Women’s suits are available in sizes 26-36 and 40 (they fit large – you may need to go down a size).  Cost is $55.  Contact me via e-mail if you are interested in a suit and let me know your approximate size.  You can pay by cash or cheque payable to “Carleton University”.

Nose Clips for Sale:  Cost $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Ask the Coach

Update on gold jewelry in the pool:  No one has reported any problems with the gold deteriorating from swimming:

From Alan Hunt (8:30am Earlybirds): “I don't think there is any need to worry about gold rings.  I've worn a wedding ring swimming masters for the last 15 years and can detect no signs of deterioration and the good news is that pool chemicals keeps the ring nice and clean!”

From Margaret King (8:30am Earlybirds): “There is only so much gold in most jewelry anyway, right? …

Interesting though, [my wedding ring] looks okay still to me.  Every so often I get it shined up.”

Dear Coach:  Will the weights room be closed during the pool shutdown?  A Muscular Swimmer

Dear A.M. Swimmer:  According to the latest information, the entire facility will be closed from Mon Apr 30th to Sun May 6th.  Thus the weight room will be open, except for that one week.

Dear Coach:  I want to swim during the shutdown.  Can you recommend any pools or programs?  Keen Swimmer

Dear K. Swimmer:  There are various options…

1. You can train at another pool during their public / adult swimming hours.  Here are a few links:

Ottawa Public Pool Swimming Schedules:

   http://ottawa.ca/residents/parks_recreation/swimming/schedules/index_en.html

Champagne Pool Drop In Masters:

Some swims at Champagne are designated Masters swims (Tu/Th 7:30-9pm and Sat 9-10:30am). I believe that you just pay the regular swim fee to join.  If anyone has more details, do let me know.

University of Ottawa Pool Swimming Schedule:

To end of April; note that the pool is closed Apr 6-9th: http://www.geegees.ca/assets/geegeereg/swimming/Simming_fall_2006.pdf; May: start at: http://www.geegees.uottawa.ca/en/index.asp?lang=EN; click on Activities at the left; and then the updated schedule should be available at the right (not yet there!)

2. There is a new Masters team that trains at the JCC (west end) and Andy Jones is one of the coaches.

This team has limited space on Mon/Wed 8-9pm; Mon/Wed 9-10pm; and Mon/Wed/Fri noon-1:30pm.  Price for the month would likely be $30-40.  Contact Andy at jonesieaj@yahoo.com for more information.

3. You can train with another Masters team.  List of All Registered Masters Clubs in Ottawa:

http://www.mastersswimmingontario.ca/clubs/ottawa.htm

If anyone has other suggestions, do let me know!

Dear Coach:  I’m often travelling to other parts of Ontario.  Is there any chance of training with another Masters team?  How would I get in touch?  Travelling Swimmer

Dear T. Swimmer:  You can check out all the registered Masters clubs in Ontario at: http://www.mastersswimmingontario.ca/clubs/places.htm.  Some do offer drop in fees – contact the club for details.

Dear Coach:  There’s sometimes a fragrant smell on the surface of the water for part of my swim.  What causes this?  Sensitive Nose

Dear S. Nose:  There is often a draft from the men’s and women’s change rooms which blows the scent of any products being used in the showers out onto the pool deck, and sometimes over the pool.  If this is bothering you, let your coach know as we can often block the change room doors to reduce this problem.
