Spring Session Dates

Just a reminder that the Spring session runs until Fri Jun 29th.  The Summer session starts Tue Jul 3rd.  Swimmers are reminded that there will be no Saturday workouts in July and August.  Also note that as the evening workouts are half-pool (6 lanes, one coach) in July/August, space is limited, so register soon to avoid disappointment.  (Details and prices are available in the “Reminders” section at the end of the newsletter.)

Membership & Facility Notes

Carleton Students who are not taking any summer courses must purchase a summer membership to use the facility.  Details at: http://www2.carleton.ca/athletics/membership.php

Control Desk staff will be checking expiry dates on all membership cards over the coming weeks.  Please cooperate when asked to present your membership card for scrutiny.

Due to the late decision to close the facility on Sunday in May/June and weekend in July/August, those with memberships will get a free extra month when they renew for next year.  Note that a one month pool shutdown is already being predicted for next April.

There was a locker break in (women’s change room) during Masters Whitecaps on Thu May 24th.  The lock was cut off and money taken out of a wallet.  Please avoid bringing valuables to the pool if possible, or use the small lockers provided by the Control Desk.

Swimmer Notes

Marie-Odile Junker (6:30am Earlybirds) is featured in the May 2007 OSCAR (Ottawa South Community Association Review) newspaper.  The full page article (p.13.) with photo focuses on Marie-Odile’s work in Carleton’s School for Studies in Linguistics and Applied Language Studies and her web site created in 2000 to preserve and teach the East Cree language: http://www.eastcree.org

Victoria Nawaby (Whitecaps “B”) is featured in the June 2007 issue of Ottawa Magazine.  The article is entitled "Brain Gain" and is about Ottawa scientists who are researching technologies for environmentally friendly living.  Victoria's part of the article is found on page 44.

Other Swimmer News:

Here’s a great article on Masters swimmer Elsa DeLeeuw, 83, Surrey, BC: http://web.bcnewsgroup.com/portals-code/list.cgi?cat=40&paper=44&id=989205.

The oldest swimmer at Masters Nationals in Winnipeg (May 18-21st) was Jaring Timmerman (Assiniboine Masters, Winnipeg) who at age 98 completed 50m free in 1:09.34 and 50m back in 1:39.61.  There’s something to aim for!

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Is it possible to get our memberships extended due to the one-month pool closure in April?  Athletics’ Membership Holder for Masters

Dear A.M.H.f. Masters:  Sorry, memberships are not being extended due to the pool closure as this was announced last Fall.  (Note that a 1 month closure is already planned for next April.)  However, due to the unexpected closures on Sundays (Spring) and weekends (Summer), when you purchase your next membership,  you will get an extra month.

Dear Coach:  Can you explain what you mean about turning your head with your shoulder to breathe in freestyle?  Freestyle Swimmer

Dear F. Swimmer:  When you turn to breathe, your head should turn with your body (i.e. remain still with respect to your shoulders).  There should be very little extra neck movement.
