Spring Session Dates

Just a reminder that the Spring session runs until Fri Jun 29th.  The Summer session starts Tue Jul 3rd.  Swimmers are reminded that there will be no workouts on the Canada Day long weekend and no Saturday workouts in July and August.  Also note that as the evening workouts are half-pool (6 lanes, one coach) in July/August, space is limited, so register soon to avoid disappointment.  (Details and prices are available in the “Reminders” section at the end of the newsletter.)

Fall 2007 High Intensity Cancellation and Whitecaps Monday Time Change Proposal

There are a few changes to Masters coming up for Fall 2007.

First, due to the ROCS club taking over the Varsity team, the High Intensity Masters program (joint workouts with the Varsity team) will no longer be offered.  Many thanks to those who have supported this Varsity swim team fundraiser in the past.

Secondly, in an attempt to streamline the times used for the Varsity teams, Athletics is considering moving the Monday Whitecaps from 6:00-7:10pm to 7:40-8:50pm.  Note that this time change is for Monday only (Tuesday and Thursday would remain 6:00-7:10pm).  In a separate e-mail you will receive a letter from Jennifer Brenning, Associate Director, Recreation and Athletics, explaining this proposal and asking for your feedback to be sent to Steve Baird, Manager, Aquatics & Children’s Programs (steve_baird@carleton.ca) by Fri Jun 22ndPlease take the time to read the letter and provide your feedback on this proposal.

Membership & Facility Notes

Carleton Students who are not taking any summer courses must purchase a summer membership to use the facility.  Details at: http://www2.carleton.ca/athletics/membership.php

Control Desk staff will be checking expiry dates on all membership cards over the coming weeks.  Please cooperate when asked to present your membership card for scrutiny.

Due to the late decision to close the facility on Sunday in May/June and weekends in July/August, those with current memberships will get a free extra month when they renew for next year.  Note that a one month pool shutdown is already being predicted for next April.

There was a locker break in (women’s change room) during Masters Whitecaps on Thu May 24th.  The lock was cut off and money taken out of a wallet.  Please avoid bringing valuables to the pool if possible, or use the small lockers provided by the Control Desk.

Upcoming Open Water Swims (Masters Swimming Ontario Registration not required)

For those who enjoy open water swimming, there are quite a few races coming up that are open to all (MSO registration not needed).  Check out the list of competitions later in the newsletter.  The first one is next Sat Jun 16th!

Swimmer Notes

Weekend to End Breast Cancer:  Kristi Dean (Coach) participated in this 60km walk on Jun 2-3rd.  She aims to raise $5000 (last year she raised over $3500) for breast cancer research.  So far she has raised $3950.  If you’d like to read more about this fundraiser or sponsor Kristi, see: http://www.endcancer.ca/site/TR?px=1813772&pg=personal&fr_id=1180.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Do you post our time trial times somewhere?  Improving Swimmer

Dear I. Swimmer:  The time trial times are not posted anywhere, although the top 3 in each event appear in the end of term newsletter.  If you want your time trial times, send me an e-mail and I’ll send you all your times.

Dear Coach:  What’s the difference between sculling and breaststroke pull?  Confused

Dear Confused:  In a sculling motion the hands move from side to side without moving forwards or backwards.  In a breaststroke pull, there is also a forwards/backwards motion of the hands.  Ask your coach for a demo!

Dear Coach:  When we are swimming in a circle, where should I do my turn?  Learning to Flip

Dear L.T. Flip:  Normally you want to push straight off the wall, so you should cross over to the far side of the lane before doing your turn (as long as it is safe to do so).  The one stroke where you need to exercise caution is backstroke as you cannot see what’s between you and the wall.  For backstroke, turning in the middle of the lane is safer.

Dear Coach:  What’s the difference between 2 x 100IM and a 200 swum as 2x100IM?  Learning the Terms

Dear L.T. Terms:  If you were swimming 2 x 100IM you would swim a 100IM and then stop, starting the second one when your pace time was up.  If you were swimming a 200 swum as 2x100IM, there would be no stop until  the entire 200IM was completed.

Dear Coach:  I’m having trouble understanding the pace clock, can you help?  New Masters Swimmer

Dear N.M. Swimmer: It’s easiest to use the pace clock when you are doing short repeats (when the number of minutes that have gone by is pretty easy to figure out).  If you have trouble figuring out the minutes in a longer swim, ask your coach for help.  If you are having difficulties with “pace clock math”, ask for help during one of your sets.
