Spring Session Dates

Just a reminder that the Spring session runs until Fri Jun 29th.  The Summer session starts Tue Jul 3rd.  Swimmers are reminded that there will be no workouts on the Canada Day long weekend (Saturday or Monday) and no Saturday workouts in July and August.  Also note that as the evening workouts are half-pool (6 lanes, one coach) in July/August, space is limited, so register soon to avoid disappointment.  (Details and prices are available in the “Reminders” section at the end of the newsletter.)

Fall 2007 Masters Whitecaps Update

Thanks to all who sent in their feedback on the proposed Monday evening time change.  In a separate e-mail you will receive a detailed letter from Steve Baird, Manager, Aquatics & Children’s Programs, explaining that the Monday evening time will remain as 6:00-7:10pm for Fall/Winter 2007/8.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  That was a great work shop yesterday morning [turn clinic on Fri Jun 8th] which was instructive, invigorating and inspirational.  Working on Turns

Dear W.o. Turns:  Glad you found it helpful.  Don’t forget to ask your coach if you have any questions about your turns (or any other aspects of your swimming).

Dear Coach:  What are the rules for starts and turns in backstroke?  Improving my Backstroke

Dear I.m. Backstroke:  For backstroke, you start in the water (it is not permitted to dive in).  You must start on your back.  If you’d like to learn a proper backstroke start, ask your coach.  For the turn, if you do an open turn (i.e. touch the wall with your hand), you must arrive at the wall on your back and leave the wall on your back.  However, if you do a flip turn, you are permitted one stroke on your stomach coming into the wall.  You must finish backstroke on your back, and thus in IM, you must do an open turn from back to breast (not a flip turn).

Dear Coach:  I can’t do (much) full stroke fly in practice.  What should I do when we do IM?  Not a Flyer

Dear N.a. Flyer:  To be fair on your lane-mates, if you are not able to do (all) full stroke fly, just ensure that you do something slower instead of the fly, such as 1-arm fly if possible, otherwise breaststroke or backstroke.  If you do freestyle it will likely disrupt your lane-mates and is not fair to those doing full stroke fly.
