June 17, 2007

Dear Carleton Masters Swimmers,

Thank-you to all those who took the time to respond to the June 8th letter from Jennifer Brenning. We have received feedback from (30) Masters swimmers regarding the ‘proposal’ to change the Whitecaps swim time to 7:40-8:50 pm on Monday evenings, from the longstanding 6:00-7:10 pm timeslot. For the most part, the feedback received was thoughtful and constructive, and all of the input received was passionate. While some swimmers felt that they could adjust to a new time on Mondays, the majority of respondents were against making a change and listed understandable reasons for their positions.

Although we intended to collect your feedback on this proposal until June 22nd, impending program planning deadlines, along with your numerous and prompt responses, make this deadline unnecessary. Therefore, we want to reassure all Masters swimmers that this ‘proposal’ will remain just that, and that the Fall-Winter 07-08 Whitecaps program will continue status quo. Your feedback has been very helpful in our decision-making process and will continue to be valued in the future.

Some positive ideas and suggestions for improvement and the revitalization of the Carleton Masters program were received. One comment received encouraged us to return to more regular Masters program surveys, that we have indeed neglected over that last couple of years. We will reintroduce regular surveys, to facilitate your feedback about the program philosophy, goals and objectives, coaching and safety supervision, pool staff, customer service and suggestions for improvement.

During the next 10 months, the Aquatics section of the Recreation and Athletics Department, will be embarking on a complete review of all our program offerings, freelance public swims, external rental groups and clubs, children’s camp programs, as well as our varsity programs. Maintaining an equitable and cost effective balance for all members of the Carleton University Pool community is an ongoing challenge and a priority.

Thanks to all, for your consideration of the Monday time-change proposal. Your comments, suggestions and ongoing commitment to the Carleton Masters Program, are very much appreciated.

Hope you all have a safe and happy summer!

Sincerely,

Steve Baird
