Summer Session Dates

The summer session starts Tue Jul 3rd / Wed Jul 4th.  (The spring session ended on Thu Jun 28th / Fri Jun 29th.)  Swimmers are reminded that there will be no workouts on the Canada Day long weekend (Saturday or Monday) and no Saturday workouts in July and August.  Finally, there will be no workouts on the August Civic Holiday, Mon Aug 6th.  Also note that as the evening workouts are half-pool (6 lanes, one coach) in July/August, space is limited, so register soon to avoid disappointment.  (Details and prices are available in the “Reminders” section at the end of the newsletter.)

Pool Summer Public Swim Schedule Notes

For July and August, the Tuesday/Thursday morning swims will be from 6:30-8:30am (not 7:30-8:30am as usual).  These swims will be in the deep end of the pool.  Note that there is just one public swim on Mon Jul 2nd from 11:45am-3:30pm.  (There will be no public swims on Saturdays, Sundays or on Mon Aug 6th as the Athletics building is closed.)

Whitecaps Summer Information

Time Trial and Relay Summary:

The information below on most improved and fastest swimmers is taken from the time trials done during the spring session, and includes the relay splits from the end of term relays.  Times done in competitions are not included.  If your times are not listed here and you're curious, just e-mail me for details.  (I have all time trial times since May 2001.)

There were 24 women and 22 men who improved in at least one event.  Six swimmers improved by at least 8 seconds per 100m.  Most improved was Emile Sanschagrin (6:30am Earlybirds) with 15.3sec/100m in 1500fs.  Next was Josiah Leung (6:30am Earlybirds) with 11.4 sec/100m in 50br, followed closely by Zivi Weinstock (Whitecaps “B”) with 10.6 sec/100m in 50fl.  Rounding out the top 6 were Charles McFarland (6:30am Earlybirds) with 9.2 sec/100m in 50bk, Debbie Lee (7:30am Earlybirds) with 8.6 sec/100m also in 50bk, and Amir Banihashemi (8:30am Earlybirds) with 8.0 sec/100m in 1500fs.

The International Point Scores (link to web page below) are used to determine the best swims.  There were 16 women and 19 men scoring 400 points or above in at least one event.  Five swimmers scored over 600 points: Nico Belisle (ROCS/PS) 673 in 1500fs; Kelys Montero (Whitecaps “A”) 670 in 50fs; Steve Kennedy (Whitecaps “A”) 651 in 50fl; Steve Nordstrum (6:30am Earlybirds) 608 in 200IM; and Lydia Sanschagrin (6:30am Earlybirds) 601 in 50fs.

Race Results: (Please send in your results!!)

Saturday, June 15th Ottawa Riverkeeper Triathlon

As reported in the previous issue, full results can be found at: http://www.sportstats.ca.  Last time I missed the team triathlon (500m/20k/5k) in which the first two teams overall (out of 12 teams) had Carleton swimmers:

Jolene Harvey’s (7:30am Earlybirds) team Enigma was top team overall and top co-ed team in 1:04:39

Blair Geddes’ (7:30am Earlybirds) team Med-Eng: Iron-Age Men was 2nd team overall and top men’s team in 1:06:06

Saturday-Sunday June 15-16th Rideau Lakes Bike Tour

Quite a few Carleton Masters participated.  Megan Longstaff, Renee Robert, Colette Kenney, Claire Robinson, Lucie Boudreau, and Penny Estabrooks (all 8:30am Earlybirds), plus Nicole Le Saux (7:30am Earlybirds) did the full two days.  Natalie Aucoin and Susan Nevitt-Yelle (both 8:30am Earlybirds) did the second half on Sunday.

Sunday, June 16th Muskoka Long Course Triathlon (2k/55k/15k)

The bike course had been changed making for an even tougher race than usual.  Full results at: http://www.sportstats.ca.  Congratulations especially to Susanne and Sara on their 3rd place finishes.  Here’s how the Carleton swimmers did:

Sunday, June 24th Ironman Switzerland

Congrats to Chad Clark (Whitecaps “A”) who finished this Ironman in a time of 11:33:09 right at the time he predicted!  He was 749th overall and 187th in men’s 35-39.  Chad’s swim was 1:04 and he reports that he beat Tour de France legend Laurent Jalabert – on the swim!  Unfortunately, Laurent passed him on the second climb of the day as if Chad was standing still J !  Full results at: http://ironman.com/events/ironman/switzerland?show=all&y=2007.

Saturday June 30th Montreal Masters Festival (LCM = 50m pool)

George, Gi and Lynn were Carleton’s three swimmers at this event.  It was a long day (as we drove to Montreal and back on the day), and the weather was quite cool.  There were two rain showers during the afternoon, but as one was during Lynn’s 200 back, where she was dreading having the sun in her eyes, we can’t really complain too much!  A photo of the “team” taken after the meet, can be found at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/07sum/ (or click on the main page http://carletonmasters.tripod.com and follow the link to “recent photos” near the top of the page).  Full results and placings are not yet available and this time Gi had a lot of competition in his age group, so we’re not sure of his placings.  However, Gi did two LC best times, and beat his coach in 50fs!

George Tombler (Whitecaps “B”; 80-84): 400fs (9:59.32; 1st); 50bk (1:10; 1st); 200fs (4:56.71; 1st); 50br (1:11.37; 1st)

Gi Wu (Whitecaps “A”; 18-24): 50fl (34.32; PB); 100fs (1:09.63); 50fs (29.93); 50br (40.30; PB)

Lynn Marshall (Coach; 45-49): 400fs (4:42.52; 1st; Nat Rec); 100br (1:34.01; 1st); 200bk (2:48.47; 1st; Ont Rec); 100fl (1:13.96; 1st); 50fs (29.95; 1st)

Saturday June 30th Technosport 2k, Meech Lake

No results yet, but I believe that the following Carleton swimmers participated: Lisa Okun (6:30am Earlybirds); Jill Patrick (7:30am Earlybirds); Suzanne Lalonde (Whitecaps “B”); Jose Vivanco, Francois Parent, Melanie Patina and Steve Kennedy (Whitecaps “A”).  Results next time.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  I’m moving to Kanata.  Do you have any recommendations as to Masters teams there?  Moving West

Dear M. West:  You can check out all the registered Masters teams in the Ottawa area at: http://www.mastersswimmingontario.ca/clubs/ottawa.htm.  I believe that both Kanata Masters teams train at the Kanata Wave Pool (very warm and no wall to push off at one end).  You may want to consider a team near where you work instead, or look into the Nepean Masters (Walter Baker pool) or Stittsville (Goulbourn pool).

Dear Coach:  I want to swim early in the mornings.  With the discontinuation of High Intensity, what are my options?  X-High-Intensity Swimmer

Dear X-H-I. Swimmer:  First, the 6:30am Masters group will continue to run for six months of the year (March-August).  For September to February (during the Varsity season) you have a few options…  You could look into joining ROCS (Ravens of Carleton Swimming age group team): http://www.rocs.ca/.  You could swim in Carleton’s public swim (6:30-8:30am MWF), or you could look into joining another Ottawa Masters swim team (see above) that offers early morning workouts.

Dear Coach:  Where can I buy one of those rescue cans so that I can tow someone to shore easily during our open water swims at Meech Lake?  Open Water Swimmer

Dear O.W. Swimmer:  You can purchase rescue cans or tubes through the Ontario Lifesaving Society (http://www.lifesavingsociety.com/default.asp?PageId=2, starting at $55) or Aquasport (http://www.aquasport.ca/Catalog.aspx?Category=14, starting at $76.50 with free shipping).  If anyone knows of a local source, let me know.

Dear Coach:  My legs sink when I swim.  What can I do to stop that?  Unstreamlined Swimmer

Dear U. Swimmer:  You need to use your upper body (head and shoulders) to counter-balance your legs.  As your coach for specific tips for the stroke you are working on and your body type.

Dear Coach:  What’s the difference between a length and a lap?  Newbie Swimmer

Dear N. Swimmer:  A length is one length of the pool (in our case at Carleton, usually 25m).  A “lap” can mean one length or two and due to this confusion the term is rarely used by swimmers – stick with “lengths” instead.
