Ask the
Coach
Dear Coach:
I've got a couple of
questions about long distance swimming.
1. How do long distance swimmers
hydrate?
2. I went in a swimming race the other day which, at 3 km, was a
long distance for me. When I got out of the water, I felt drunk. I'm pretty
athletic and am familiar with muscle exhaustion feelings and this was different:
I felt woozy and somewhat disoriented. Somebody suggested it was low blood
sugar, but I've been for long runs and never felt this. What do you
think?
Thanks. Kurious
Mile Swimmer
Dear K.M. Swimmer:
1. When swimming in
(clean) fresh water, you can drink the water that you are swimming in.
This doesn’t work in salt water or in a swim or race that’s long enough to
require calorie intake. Rules for open water swimming permit a support
boat to pass a swimmer food and drink, but the swimmer may not touch the
boat.
2. It’s unlikely that
you would become dehydrated enough to feel dizzy after a 3k swim. I’d
always thought that the balance problems after a long open water swim were a
result of spending too much time horizontal without vertical clues (such as the
walls of the pool when swimming indoors). However, as the loss of balance
does appear to be worse after swimming in (very) cold water, a bit of research
on the web suggests that cold water getting into your ears may affect the
vestibular apparatus (which controls balance). Ear plugs (silicon
recommended) can help if this is the cause, see: http://www.timedfinals.com/16052007/how-to-keep-the-focus-on-swimming-while-in-cold-water/.
Dear
Coach: What’s
the difference between IM and IMo? Forgetful
Swimmer
Dear F.
Swimmer: When a repeat is swum as IM, you divide it into quarters and do
the first ¼ fly, the 2nd back, 3rd breast and
4th free. When repeats are done in IMo (IM order), you do one
repeat fly, one back, one breast and one free. Thus 4 x 100IM would be 4 x
(25fl+25bk+25br+25fs), whereas 4 x 100IMo would be 100fl, 100bk, 100br,
100fs.
