Swimmer
Notes
Get Well Soon: Anita
Manley
(Earlybirds/Whitecaps) is being treated for bipolar disorder at the Royal Ottawa
Mental Health Centre. The average stay for treatment is about two
months. Anita has been in hospital for a little over a month and has
graduated to getting day passes with a 9pm curfew. She reports that the
new and improved ROMHC has lots of activities (volleyball, crafts, baking, etc.)
to help pass the time. See their web site: http://www.rohcg.on.ca/ to learn more.
We hope to see you back swimming soon,
Anita!
Fall Themes Posted:
The workout
themes and Saturday coaches for Fall 2007 have been posted on the bulletin board
and web site (http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/mastplanfall07.pdf
or go to the main site and scroll down to the Fall information).
Athletics Members E-Survey:
Athletics is
conducting an e-survey of its community members (i.e. all those who purchase a
membership as they are not staff/students). If you are a community member
and didn’t receive an e-mail inviting you to complete the on-line survey and you
would like to participate, let me
know.
E-Newsletter E-Mail List
Clean-Up: In the
October time frame, I’ll be cleaning up the e-newsletter lists. Only those
who are registered for Fall will continue to receive the newsletter. If
you do not plan to register for Fall, but would like to continue to receive the
newsletter, just send me an e-mail
request.
Athletics Permanent
Lockers:
All permanent lockers in Athletics
must be renewed by Fri Sept 21st. Renewal forms are available
at the Control Centre. All remaining permanent lockers will go on sale at
6pm Wed Sep 26th on a first come-first served
basis.
Swimming Induced
Pulmonary Edema (SIPE): A TriRudy triathlete,
Katherine Calder-Becker, recently experienced this potentially life-threatening
condition (for a description and symptoms, see: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m3225/is_5_69/ai_114023759).
She has been in contact with Dr. Daniel Weiler, author of several studies
on SIPE, and as he feels that this condition is often misdiagnosed, he is
setting up a registry to record occurrences of SIPE in triathletes. For
more information or if you or someone you know has experienced this, please
contact Kat at: triathlonteam@gmail.com.

Ask the
Coach
Dear Coach:
How should I
hold my kick board when I do backstroke kick? IM
Kicker
Dear I.M.
Kicker: First, if you are doing an even number of lengths of back kick,
don’t use a board at all. If you are doing an odd number of lengths, then
hold the board so that it is (mostly) out of the water. If you do back
kick with your arms above your head, hold the corner of the board in your top
hand with the rest pointing up towards the ceiling. If you do back kick
with your arms at your side, hold a corner in either of your hands, again with
the rest pointing up. Ask for a
demo.
Dear
Coach: My turns
are slower than my lane-mates. What am I doing wrong? Slow
Turner
Dear S.
Turner: Ask your coach to have a look at your turns to give you specific
tips. General tips to improve your turns
include:
1. Ensure that
you push off in a submerged streamlined position (you should stay underwater at
least 5m).
2. Turn in a
vertical circle (like a water wheel), not a horizontal circle (like a
whirlpool).
3. Tuck tightly
during your turns by bringing your knees to your chest as that will allow you to
spin faster. For a fun test (out of the water), try: http://www.exploratorium.edu/snacks/momentum_machine.html.
(Note that this trick helps you spin faster in a horizontal rather than
vertical circle, but the principle is the
same.)
