Masters Swimming Ontario Registration / Renewals

If you are interested in competing in any Masters Swimming competitions (open to age 18+) between now and December 2008, it’s time to register with MSO (Masters Swimming Ontario).  If you’re not sure about competing, talk to your coach.  To get in on the main club registration, I need your personal information and $25 by Fri Oct 12th.  (After that date there will be an extra $1 fee to cover postage/handling.)

Masters Etiquette

Here are a few guidelines for making your Masters workout an enjoyable experience for everyone…

Equipment:  Please get yourself a kickboard and a pull-buoy at the beginning of each workout, and put them away at the end.  Some swimmers are quite fussy as to the colour/style of their equipment so try not to use someone else’s favourite!  (If yours has disappeared, just ask the coach for a replacement.)

Punctuality:  While I know that everyone has busy schedules and this is not always possible, please do your best to arrive on time.  If you are late, join in with the least possible disruption to your lane-mates.  Similarly, if you have to leave early, do your cool-down without throwing off the “flow” of your lane.

Lane Flow:  Except during warm up and warm down, everyone in the lane should be swimming (more or less) together.  The swimmers should start at 5 sec intervals (10 sec if there is space) on each swim.  Everyone should be on the same pace times.  If your lane has a wide variety of speeds, there may be times when you lap or get lapped by everyone.  If you fall behind, just skip 50m and join in with the others.  Do your best to stay with the pace times the coach gave your lane.  If things are not working out for you, let the coach know.

Avoid Scented Products:  Several of our swimmers have sensitivities to chemicals.  Please avoid using strongly scented products both before your swim and in the shower afterwards.

Swimmer Notes

Engagement:  Kristi Dean (7:30am Earlybirds & Saturday Coach) and Jim McConnery got engaged on Sept 20th.  They plan to get married at the end of March 2008.  Congratulations, Kristi!!

Addison’s Disease:  John Waring (x-Whitecaps “A” & Varsity Coach) who is living in London, ON, recently had a nearly fatal Addison’s disease crisis.  Addison’s disease is caused by malfunctioning adrenal glands, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Addison's_disease.  He’s out of hospital now and on medication (that he’ll have to take permanently).  However, on the positive side, he’s feeling better than he has in two years and is quite relieved that he finally knows what’s wrong with him, as the symptoms were very difficult to diagnose until it reached the crisis stage.

Back to the Pool:  It’s great to see that Anita Manley (8:30am Earlybirds/Whitecaps “B”) has been released from the Royal Ottawa hospital and is back swimming.  Welcome back, Anita!

Move to Dallas:  Victoria Nawaby (Whitecaps/Nightcaps) and her daughter Dariya (Safety Supervision) have moved to Dallas, TexasVictoria says: “Both Dariya and I have enjoyed swimming at Carleton very much and will miss all our good friends.  We will continue to swim once we are settled in Dallas and I will let you know how life is treating us there.”  For those who want to keep in touch, Victoria’s e-mail address is nawabyv at hotmail dot com.  We’ll miss you both!

Holiday Update:  George Tombler (Whitecaps “B”) sends this e-mail from his holiday in Greece: “My Greek swimming training is going strong but for the distractions.  Every time I peer out to take a breath during my front crawl I’m greeted with dozens of topless sunbathing Aphrodites.”

Top Girls:  (Not to be confused with topless girls.)  Charles McFarland (7:30am Earlybirds) is directing this play which will be performed at the Arts Court Theatre from Oct 25th – Nov 3rd.  More information at: http://www.thirdwall.com/pdf/Thirdwall-2007-2008.pdf.

Watermelon:  Thanks to Margaret King (8:30am Earlybirds) who brought watermelon for all the 8:30am swimmers on Wed Sept 26th.

Historical Swim Times:  Jennifer Evans (8:30am Earlybirds) whose research involves looking at microfilm of 1950s-era GDR newspapers recently came across this information on the sports pages of a 1958 Berliner Zeitung am Abend (Berlin Evening News):  “At the German Nationals in Magdeburg new (East) German records were set in men's 200 backstroke where Dieter Pfeifer came in at 2:27.1. Jutta Langenaus on the other hand set a new women's 800m record at 11:43.4. Karin Beyer clocked a mighty 1:22.4 for 100 breast, while Annaliese Schneider finished just under 3 minutes (2:51.0) for her 200 m back.”  Swimming has come a long way in the last 50 years, as those times are not very competitive at all these days!

Memorial Service:  An obituary for Jack Galvin (North York Gators Masters Swimmer) was included in the last newsletter.  His memorial service was held Sat Sept 29th and Bryan Finlay (organizer of the MSO 5km swim championships held in early September) has put together a great tribute to Jack at: http://soloswims.com/galvin.htm

E-Newsletter E-Mail List Clean-Up:  I’ve just about finished cleaning up the e-newsletter lists.  After this newsletter, only those who are registered for Fall and those who have requested to be on the “alumni” list will continue to receive the newsletter.  If you registered in the last few days, still plan to register or want to be on the “alumni” list, just drop me an e-mail.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Someone asked about buying polyester suits in the last newsletter and you suggested http://www.aquasport.ca in Montreal.  I just wanted to let you know that they’re not actually that hard to find locally – Sports Experts at Bayshore has a large selection, and Sports4 on Bank also carries them. So does Champagne Pool (smaller selection) at very good prices – closer to $50 for a women's suit instead of the usual $70+.  Ellen B (Whitecaps “B”)

Dear Ellen:  Many thanks for your tips!

Dear Coach:  What is IM?  A Confused Newbie

Dear A.C. Newbie:  IM stands for Individual Medley, and is a combination of four strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle (in that order).

Dear Coach:  What is RIM and revIM?  A Very Confused Newbie

Dear A.V.C. Newbie:  RIM or revIM stands for reverse IM.  In this case you swim the four strokes in reverse order: freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and then butterfly.

Dear Coach:  How do I know how many lengths of each stroke to do in IM?  Still Confused Newbie

Dear S.C. Newbie:  Unless otherwise stated, you break up the total distance into quarters and do the first ¼ butterfly, the 2nd quarter backstroke, the 3rd quarter breaststroke, and the last quarter freestyle.  When you are swimming in a 25m pool (as we do), a trick is to look at the first number and that will tell you how many lengths of each stroke to do.  For example, a 400IM would consist of 4 lengths (100m) fly, 4 lengths back, 4 lengths breast and 4 lengths free.

Dear Coach:  How far is a lap?  How about a length?  Counting My Distance

Dear C.M. Distance:  We generally avoid the use of “lap” as it’s confusing.  Stick with length (1 length = 25m), or count meters instead.
