Canadian Association for Advancement of Women in Sports and Physical Activity (CAAWS)

Mariann Domonkos is working on a photography assignment for this group.  Her photos are to show women age 55-70 involved in physical activity, including photos of them involved in physical activity with others of any age.  She’d like to take some photos of Carleton Masters workouts for this project.  No one will have their photo taken unless they are willing and have signed a waiver that their photo (but not name) may be used in CAAWS publications.  More details when they’ve been worked out.  You will find a short document telling you more about CAAWS at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/caaws.pdf.  Any questions or concerns, please let me know.

Swimmer Notes

Swimmer News:

Lori Melien (Nightcaps & ROCS Coach) is mentioned in the most recent SwimNews magazine (July/August 2007) as the Canadian 13-14 National Age Group Record for LC 50m free that she set as a 14yr old in 1986 at 26.51 (swimming for Ajax Aquatic Club) was broken this summer by Amanda Reason from Windsor who did 26.38.  Lori says that she was glad to see it go (after 21 years!), as it shows that there are young Canadians swimming fast.  For those who don’t know, Lori is an Olympic medalist.  She won a bronze medal in the Seoul Olympics (1988) as the 100 backstroke swimmer on the 4x100 medley relay.

Colette Kenney (8:30am Earlybirds) has completed her first TriRudy award.  This involves doing the Winterlude Triathlon, Keskinada ski race, Rideau Lakes bike tour, an Ironman triathlon, and a marathon all in one year!  Well done, Colette!!

Penny Estabrooks (8:30am Earlybirds) will be selling some of her paintings and cards made from photos of her paintings at a small Xmas Craft show featuring five artists 2-4pm Sat Nov 10th 86 Prince Albert St off the Vanier Parkway.  RSVP by Wed Nov 7th to lizziepea@gmail.com

Charles McFarland (7:30am Earlybirds) is directing “Top Girls” (through Nov 3rd at Arts Court: 613-236-1435).  You can watch a 2min promo on You Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VIo7Zz6mWM and read a review on page 30 of Friday’s Metro: http://www.metronews.ca/uploadedFiles/PDFs/20071026_ottawa.pdf.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  What is revIM and revIMo?  Newbie

Dear Newbie:  revIM or RIM starts for reverse IM.  In other words, instead of fly, back, breast and free, you start with free, then breast, back and fly.  The “o” just stands for order.  Thus is you were doing 4 x 50 revIMo, that would mean four 50s, one of each stroke, in reverse IM order.  Thus the first 50 is free, the second breast, 3rd back and 4th fly.  If you were doing 4 x 50 revIM (no “o”), that would mean that each 50 was done as a reverse IM, i.e. ¼ of the 50 of each stroke, i.e. the first 12.5m free, the next 12.5m breast, then 12.5 back, then 12.5 fly.

Dear Coach:  You mentioned prescription goggles.  How much do they cost and where can I buy them?  Short-sighted Swimmer

Dear S-s. Swimmer:  You can buy Speedo prescription goggles for about $25 from Sports Experts.  You need to be able to see the pace clock to know how fast you are swimming, so these are a great investment if you have poor eyesight.  They come in ½ diopters (e.g. -2, -2.5, …, up to about -8).

Dear Coach:  My eyesight is pretty good, but I find that red pace clock really hard to see.  When will the portable white pace clock be fixed (it’s been months)??  Frustrated Swimmer

Dear F. Swimmer:  I was getting frustrated, too, so I managed to fix it myself on Friday!  You’ll see it on the pool deck starting Monday.  I also resynchronized all the pool deck pace clocks, so it won’t take 5 seconds more swimming in one direction than the other when you stop at the bulkhead!

Dear Coach:  Can you remind me what you put in your ear drops?  Swimmer Prone to Ear Infections

Dear S.P.t.E. Infections:  First you need a small squeezy bottle with a small hole in the top.  The easiest way to get one of these is to buy the real ear drops (e.g. Burosol) from the pharmacy.  Once the bottle is empty, you can make your own refill.  You want to mix about 90% rubbing alcohol with about 10% vinegar or hydrogen peroxide.  These drops work well after swimming to get the water out of your ear (the rubbing alcohol helps it evaporate) and to change the Ph in your ear (the vinegar or hydrogen peroxide) so that nothing nasty will grow in your ears.
