Masters Christmas
Party
Many thanks to Don, Joanie, Ben and
Sam (Whitecaps “A”, Nightcaps, Safety
Supervision) who hosted yet another amazing Christmas potluck party on Sat Dec 8th. Thanks to all
who were able to attend. The food was plentiful and delicious as
always. This year Don and Joanie received a gift certificate for the
Keg and babysitting so they can go out to dinner together. Thanks to
George and Jose for organizing this, and to Debby for volunteering to
baby-sit.

Notes

Notes:
Louise Hayes (Coach) and Christian Diotte, who
have been together for 4.5 years, got engaged on Fri Nov 30th (and
Louise was coaching bright and early the following morning!). A wedding
date hasn’t yet been set but is planned for sometime in 2008.
Congratulations to Louise and Chris!
Maureen Mahoney (Whitecaps “A”) is
recovering from a crazy busy Fall that culminated in her Ph.D. comprehensive
exams last week. She’s in her first year of the Ph.D. program at Carleton
studying American History. Her comprehensive topic was US History from
1870-1950 and the topics ranged from intellectual history to
domestic culture and foreign policy. Maureen passed her comprehensives
with distinction – great work, Maureen!!
Charles McFarland (7:30am Earlybirds) was
the director of GCTC’s “A Number” by Caryl Churchill that was recently honoured
with the “Best Production” award by the Capital Critics Circle Capital Theatre
Awards for 2006-2007. Well done, Charles!

Gi Wu (Whitecaps “A”) always seems to have
the “best” excuses for arriving late or leaving early at swim practice.
Here are the top 3:
3. I
was late because… the trunk of my car was frozen shut and my swim suit was in
the trunk.
2. I
was late because… I couldn’t remember where I parked my car in the parking lot
at work.
1. I
had to leave early because… I need to get my hair cut. (He shaves his head
himself at home!)

group has raced those events. The updated club records can be found on the

Ask the
Coach
Dear
Coach: Do you know anyone who has
tried or has an opinion on H2OAudio? They are waterproof cases for
I-pods. More info at: http://www.h2oaudio.com/. Would it
create a lot of drag to strap one of these to your arm or goggles? Would
it be dangerous to use due to not hearing other swimmers? Bored Swimming
on My Own
Dear B.S.o.M. Own: Do any
readers have an opinion on this? I know that Speedo used to make a
waterproof radio, but I heard that the quality (reception, sound) was pretty
poor. I’d think that there would be some drag created by wearing
one. However, I don’t think it would be dangerous in the pool (it’s pretty
hard to hear the other swimmers just from the wave noise), but I’d think it
would be very dangerous in open water when hearing approaching motor boats is
pretty important.
Dear
Coach: I’d like to get more feedback
on my technique. Is this possible during workout? New
Swimmer
Dear N. Swimmer: Of
course! All the coaches are happy to provide stroke
correction. Ensure that your coach is aware that
you want lots of feedback (not everyone does!). If there’s one stroke (or
strokes) in particular that you are working on, ask your coach to give you
specific tips for the areas that you’re trying to
improve.
