Birth
Notice:  Janine Debanne (x-7:30am Earlybirds) gave birth to
a baby boy, Luc, in late November.  He was due in December and arrived
(surprise!) while she was visiting
Women with
Permanent Lockers:  For your information, last week
there was an incident of vandalism in the women’s change room where one of the
Morning Masters women had her bathing suit (hanging on the lock of her permanent
locker) slashed and torn.

Time Trial and Relay
Summary:
The information below on most
improved and fastest swimmers is taken from the time trials done during
the fall session, and includes the relay splits from the end of term
relays.  Times done in competitions are not included.  If
your times are not listed here and you're curious, just e-mail me for
details.  (I have all time trial times since May
2001.)

There were 26 women and 21
men who improved in at least one event.  There were some huge
improvements.

The International Point Scores (link
to web page below) are used to determine the best swims.  There
were 13 women and 16 men scoring 400 points or above in at least one
event.  Tony Revitt (7:30am
Earlybirds) led the way with 643 for a 26.8 50fs.  Kelys Montero (Whitecaps “A”) was top woman
and 2nd overall with 622 for a 1:07.5 100fs, followed closely by
Lydia Sanschagrin (Whitecaps “A”)
with 615 for a 31.0 50fs.  Next was Steve Morris (Whitecaps “A”) with 605 for a
27.5 50fs.  Three other women and seven other men scored over 500
points.  Alex Russell (8:30am
Earlybirds) scored over 400 points in 50fs in his first term of swimming – well
done, Alex!
While we don’t have a “most
consistent” award, if we did, it would go to Steve Morton (Whitecaps “A”) who did 26:06
in his 1500fs this term, equaling (exactly) the time he did in both 2002 and
2004.

The top 3 improvements and the top 3
times for each event are also listed below, as are the results of the
relays.
Thanks to Peter M (Whitecaps “A”) for putting in 3 of
the 4 blocks for the relays on Thu Dec 18th.  Thanks also to the
8:30am group for taking out the
blocks and for providing entertainment in secretly planning a 3-way tie for the
free relay.  I was so busy writing down splits that I didn’t realize
something was up until Chris
Kent’s 1:03 anchor 50 (Chris did :35 on the 50fs in the medley relay,
so the 1:03 was quite a challenge for him!).  Thanks very much to the
8:30am group for the card and gift certificate.
Give yourself a pat on the back if
you participated in the time trials!

Ask the
Coach
All:
No one responded with any info on
H2OAudio (http://www.h2oaudio.com/, waterproof cases
for I-pods), I found some reviews on-line.  They range from great to awful:
http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B0009IZSAK/ref=dp_db_cm_cr_acr_txt?%5Fencoding=UTF8&showViewpoints=1

Dear Coach:
What can I do to improve my
swimming in 2008?  Need a New Year’s
Resolution
Dear N.a.N.Y. Resolution:  Make
a New Year’s Resolution with regards to your swimming that you can keep.
This can range from a commitment to make a certain number of workouts per week,
or a commitment to improve something about your swimming.  Do you always
watch the pace clock?  Do you always to proper turns?  Figure out a
weak point and try to do it better every
time in 2008!  Consistency is the key.  Ask your coach if
you need some suggestions.
Dear
Coach:  I try to do good breaststroke
pullouts of every breaststroke turn and I find that I’m often bumping into those
ahead of me who don’t do this.  Why doesn’t everyone do them?  And
should I try to maximize the distance I go underwater or the speed of the
underwater pull out, e.g. http://www.goswim.tv/vids/kevinunderwater.mov vs
http://www.breaststroke.info/breastpullout.htm?
Working
on Turns
Dear W.o. Turns:
Improving your turns (even in just one stroke) would be a great New Year’s
Resolution (see above).  The reason that not everyone does them is that we
all tend to be lazy and unless you do proper turns all the time, it’s hard work
to do them properly (the more you do them, the easier it becomes).  As for
speed vs distance off the wall, it really depends on the person and the speed of
your underwater pullout vs the speed of your breaststroke (and how tiring you
find holding your breathe).  You can time yourself over 25m with various
lengths of turns and see what works best for you.
Dear
Coach:
If I do a really bad flip turn in
the shallow end and put my hand down against the bottom of the pool to avoid
grazing against it, would that be a disqualification in a real race?  What
about brushing my arm against the lane rope during a race: is that a DQ?
No Dairy Queen for Me!
Dear N.D.Q.f. Me:  In
freestyle, just about anything goes.  You can even stand up on the bottom
during a race, as long as you don’t walk or push off the bottom when you start
swimming again.  Thus touching the bottom with your hand is ok, as long as
you don’t propel yourself forward using the bottom of the pool.  Similarly,
propelling yourself forward using the lane rope would be a DQ, but generally
bumping against it (accidentally) tends to slow you down rather than speed you
up, so you would not be disqualified.  See the FINA rules http://www.fina.org/rules/english/swimming.php
