Winter Session
Dates
Just a note to let you know that
Masters runs as usual during Carleton’s “Reading Week”: Feb
18-22nd.
Winter
Registration
If you are planning to swim in the
Winter session, please register ASAP. You may register for the winter
continuation of the four groups that are currently running (7:30am Earlybirds,
8:30am Earlybirds, 6pm Whitecaps, 8pm Nightcaps), as well as for the 6:30am
group. The first four groups start on Mon Jan 7th (morning
groups) / Tue Jan 8th (evening groups). Note, however, that
the 6:30am group
does not start until Mon Feb 25th. If you
plan to start with one of the four existing groups and then transfer to the
6:30am group as of Feb 25th, please register with the group that you
will join in January and let Lynn know that you plan to switch in
February.
Swimmer
Notes
Apology:
My apologies to Gi Wu (Whitecaps “A”) who I accidentally
hit in the mouth with a pull buoy, requiring first aid due to the blood from his
split lip. His looks are now returning to normal and it no longer hurts
for him to eat (over a week later). Sorry,
Gi!
Late Birth
Announcement: Congratulations to Sarah Farrish (8:30am Earlybirds) and her
family on the birth of their second son Benjamin born 11 days early on Oct
4th, 2007 weighing 8lb 9oz. Sarah did send an e-mail but it
must have got lost in the network somewhere!
Another Get Well
Soon: It seems that Christmas holidays
were dangerous times for Carleton Masters swimmers. In addition to
Christian Molgat
(7:30am Earlybirds) recovering from a broken wrist injured
while skiing at Whistler, Mary Lou
Dunnigan (7:30am Earlybirds) was hit in the ankle by a “runaway” surf
board on the first day of a two week sun vacation. She received a bad cut
and had to have stitches, and then avoid the sand and water for the remainder of
the time! She went to get the stitches out last week and was hoping to be
back in the pool this week, but as it was still tender she had an x-ray and has
a cracked bone in her ankle, so we won’t see her for a while longer.
Here’s hoping for a quick recovery!
“Spare Goggles
Bag”: Thanks to Angela Davis (7:30am Earlybirds)
and Christianne Wilke (Whitecaps
“B”) who recently donated goggles to the cause!
Mono-Fin
Swimming: Here’s a tape of mono-fin swimming,
including some footage from an 800m World Record of 6:23.96: http://youtube.com/watch?v=XzBWQ1p1d74&feature=related.
“Victor” (The
Victor Davis Movie) on CBC 8pm Sun Jan 13th: I heard
mixed reviews (mostly somewhat negative) about the movie. If anyone taped
it, I wouldn’t mind borrowing the tape!
Winter Workout
Themes: The themes for the winter session
workouts have been posted on the web site.
Nose Clips for
Winter Session
Information
Due to a request, we’ve rearranged
the lanes a bit for Whitecaps “A”. We’ll revisit in a few weeks and decide
if we should continue like this for the full session or change the lanes around
again sometime next month.
Here are the latest weekday
attendance statistics. (We don’t record attendance on Saturdays.
However, for those unsure about swimming at 8:30am or 9:30am, on Sat Jan
19th there were 16 swimmers at 8:30am and 28 at 9:30am!) Those
with perfect attendance for the session will receive a certificate. There
are currently many swimmers with perfect weekday attendance – keep it up!
I believe that this is the first time we’ve seen a higher average for the 8:30am
group than for the 7:30am group. Right now the 8:30am group has the second
highest average attendance, behind Whitecaps “A”.

12th Technosport Swim Meet (
Two Carleton swimmers, Margaret King (8:30am Earlybirds) and
Lynn Marshall (Coach) participated
in this meet. Not too many swimmers in total so it was all over in not
much over an hour. Margaret swam 100bk, 50fs, and 100fs.
Ask the
Coach
Dear Coach:
Can you explain the times that
you write on the board? Is that how fast I have to swim? Swim
Newbie
Dear S. Newbie: The times on
the board are pace times. The time is your swim time plus your rest
time. Thus if your pace time is 1:00 and it takes you 50 seconds, you get
10 seconds rest before starting again. If the swim took you 40 seconds,
you’d get 20 seconds rest. If it took you over 1:00, you may not be in the
right lane – talk to your coach!
Dear
Coach: It seems that after every
workout, there are quite a few kick boards and pull buoys left by my lane.
Can you please remind everyone to clean up after themselves? It Shouldn’t
Always Be My Job
Dear I.S.A.B.M Job: Thanks for
mentioning this! Please remember to get yourself the equipment you need
before workout and to return it after your swim. The soft yellow kick
boards and the “torpedo” shaped pull buoys go in the brown Masters box.
The other kick boards and pull buoys go in the racks along the wall. If
you’re not sure where something goes, please ask your coach. Similarly, if
we use other equipment such as paddles or fins, please ensure that everything is
put away in the right boxes.
