Swimmer
Notes
Masters Swimmers
in the News:
Jim Lee (7:30am Earlybirds) was featured in
a recent Heart & Stroke foundation newsletter: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/JimHeartStroke.pdf.
Jim has made an amazing recovery from a stroke. He continues work on his
Ph.D. and did a best time in his 50bk in practice this
week!
Charles McFarland (7:30am Earlybirds) has topped his December Capital
Theatre Award for Best Production with a whole slew of additional honours for
2007, by securing a huge number of nominations for the first ever Rideau Awards
(peer-assessed awards for Ottawa’s English Professional Theatre) with his two
productions last year: “Top Girls” and “A Number”: Top Girls has been
nominated for Best Production; Charles for Best Director for A Number; Kristina
Watt for Best Female Performance for her part in Top Girls; Rebecca Miller for
Best Design (Lighting) for Top Girls; Brian Smith for Best Design (Set) for A
Number; and Colleen Sutton for Best Emerging Artist for her part in Top
Girls! Awards will be presented on April 13th.
Congratulations, Charles! See: http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/news/arts/story.html?id=1aafd9b1-87da-4541-8bb9-e27c98f7384b.
Charles’ next production, The Optimists, opens Thu Jan 31st at the
new GCTC Theatre, see: http://www.gctc.ca/emailers/play03.html.
Young Swimmer
Dies: Carleton student Mark MacDonald, 20, who swam for NKB up until a few years ago,
and who tried out for the Varsity team last year but decided against the
commitment (he also swam one workout with the Whitecaps “A” fast lane in
September) was killed in a car accident on Wed Jan 23rd. See:

suits.

Winter Session
Information
Many thanks to Ann Marie Pullen (Whitecaps “B”, Pool
Staff) who kindly agreed to coach Whitecaps “B” for Mits on Tue Jan
22nd. Ann Marie stepped in at the last minute as Mits was sick
and none of the Masters substitute coaches were
available.
Coach Louise Hayes sends her apologies for being
late getting to the pool to coach on the morning of Sat Feb 2nd, due
to the snow plow not getting to her street until just after
8:30am.
Some Whitecaps “B” did 200 free time
trials on Mon Jan 21st, and Whitecaps “A” and Earlybirds did two 50
time trials on Tue Jan 29th / Wed Jan 30th. All the
time trial results for the term will be summarized in the end of term newsletter
in April.
Here are the latest weekday
attendance statistics. Those with perfect attendance for the session will
receive a certificate. There are currently 12 swimmers with perfect weekday attendance
– keep it up! I believe that this is the first time we’ve seen a higher
average for the 8:30am group than for the 7:30am group. The 8:30am group
is still just beating out the 7:30am group for the second highest attendance
(behind Whitecaps “A”). In addition, the 8:30am group has half of those
(six) with perfect weekday
attendance to date!

Ask the
Coach
Dear Coach:
What’s the difference between
negative split and descend? Isn’t it the same thing? Confused
Swimmer
Dear C. Swimmer: A negative
split is when the second half of a swim (repeat) is faster than the first
half. Descend is when each repeat is faster than the one before.
Thus if you did 3 x 200 negative split, the total time for each 200 could be the
same, as long as the 2nd 100 of each 200 was faster than the
1st 100 of each 200. If you did 3 x 200 descend, the total time
for each 200 would be faster (less) for #2 than for #1, and for #3 than for
#2. Within each 200, you could have got faster, slower or stayed the same
for the 2nd 100 compared to the 1st
100.
Dear
Coach: OK then, what about build vs
descend or negative split? Still Confused
Dear S. Confused: We usually
use build to refer to getting faster within a repeat – i.e. start the swim at a
moderate pace and gradually speed up through the repeat. Thus if you
build, you will negative split. (But a negative split is not necessarily a
build!) We sometimes say “build through the set”. In that case the
effort should increase on each swim. We usually use build when the repeats
are of different lengths or strokes (to refer to effort level rather than actual
swim time). If the repeats are the same stroke and distance then we
normally say “descend” as each time will be faster than the one
before.
