Winter Session Dates

Just a note to let you know that Masters runs as usual during Carleton’s “Reading Week” Feb 18-22nd, including “Family Day” on Mon Feb 18th.  The only cancellations this term are for Easter: Fri Mar 21st, Sat Mar 22nd and Mon Mar 24th, inclusive.

6:30am Very Earlybirds

The 6:30am group starts on Mon Feb 25th.  This term we will have just four lanes for this group (ROCS/Varsity will have the other two).  Due to this, the number of spots in this group has been reduced, so register soon to avoid disappointment.  Those who e-mailed me about transferring to this group from 7:30am, 8:30am or Whitecaps have all been moved in, effective Feb 25th.  Any questions, do let me know.

Swimmer Notes

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  What are legal turns?  New Masters Swimmer

Dear N.M. Swimmer:  A legal turn is a turn that is permitted as per FINA (Federation Internationale de Natation, http://www.fina.org/) rules, i.e. a turn that you could do in competition without being disqualified.  The (simplified) rules are as follows:

Freestyle: may touch the wall with any part of your body in any orientation; may push off in any orientation and must surface before 15m.

Backstroke: may touch the wall with any part of your body as long as you are on your back, except that if you are turning from backstroke to backstroke, a flip turn is permitted with just one arm motion on your front and a continuous motion into the turn; must push off on your back and surface before 15m.

Breaststroke: both hands must touch the wall simultaneously while you are on your front; must push off on your front and can do one underwater pullout (one fly pull with a dolphin kick, followed by bringing your arms back up with one breast kick), this is the only stroke where you can stay under longer than 15m (if you can make your pull out that long!)

Fly: both hands must touch the wall simultaneously while you are on your front; must push off on your front and surface by 15m.

IM: when changing between strokes, the touch rules for the stroke you are finishing apply and the push-off rules for the stroke you are starting.

Dear Coach:  What are the rules for turns when we’re doing drop-a-stroke or add-a-stroke or random order IM?  For example fs to bk, bk to fs, fs to br, etc.?  Aiming for Always Legal Turns

Dear A.f.A.L. Turns:  There are no official rules for these turns as they are not performed in competition.  However, the guidelines above can be applied (i.e. legal finish of one stroke, followed by legal push-off of the next).

Dear Coach:  Why don’t they just take the time when the second (last) hand touches the wall in fly or breast, if the swimmer’s hands don’t touch simultaneously?  Innovative Swimmer

Dear I. Swimmer:  As we discussed, this wouldn’t work too well with electronic timing (which registers the first touch), but it’s not so much a matter of the swimmer’s time, but the swimmer’s adherence to the rules.  The rules state that the hands must touch simultaneously.  Note that SWAD (Swimmer With A Disability) category swimmers may be exempt from the usual rules depending on their disability and capabilities (e.g. a swimmer with only one arm, etc.).

Dear Coach:  What are the rules for passing and being passed during workout?  Trying to Pass

Dear T.t. Pass:  Given that the Earlybirds and Whitecaps “A” did a passing practice workout this past week, that’s a very appropriate question!  The most important thing is to avoid collisions.  Ideally, the passee should realize that the passer is approaching and make a definite move one way or the other (i.e. right or left) to let the passer know that the passee is aware of him/her and to indicate which side the passer should go.  The passee should choose left or right so that whichever swimmer reaches the wall first has crossed over to the far side of the lane, but if both are going to arrive at the wall fairly close together, it doesn’t really matter if the passee guessed incorrectly as long as it was clear to the passer which way to move.  Toe touching (to let the passee know that you’re there) shouldn’t be required if everyone is paying attention!  Ideally you should be able to pass without either person having to stop.  Ask your coach for help if this is unclear.

Dear Coach:  Despite the new signs (limiting locker use to 3 hrs), it can still be impossible to find a locker in the women’s change room around 6pm.  Also, there is often no hot water after workout.  Can something be done about this?  Cranky Swimmer (when I don’t get a locker or hot water!)

Dear C. Swimmer:  I’ve reported both concerns to Paul Armstrong, Customer Service Manager.  Please report these issues to the Control Desk on your way out so that they are aware.
