Winter Session
Dates
The only cancellations this term
are for Easter: Fri Mar 21st, Sat Mar
22nd and Mon Mar 24th, inclusive.
The Winter session ends
on Thu Apr 17th / Fri Apr 18th. The pool will then
be closed for 16 days annual maintenance with the Spring session starting Mon
May 5th. Details on Spring/Summer programs and prices coming
soon.
6:30am Very
Earlybirds
The 6:30am group started on Mon Feb 25th. On Mondays
and Fridays this term we will have just four lanes for this group (ROCS/Varsity
will have the other two). Due to this, the number of spots in this group
has been reduced, so register soon to avoid disappointment. Note that we
do have all six lanes and the diving well on
Wednesdays.

Updates:
Congratulations to
Jill Patrick (7:30am Earlybirds)
and Jose Vivanco (Whitecaps “A”)
who got engaged on Feb 13th. A small spring wedding is
planned.
Get well soon wishes to
Tracey McGrath (Nightcaps) who
reports that she broke her leg while skiing on Feb 13th. She
hopes to be back in the pool in April.
Christian Molgat (7:30 / 8:30am Earlybirds)
is back in the pool this week after breaking his wrist while skiing over the
Christmas holidays.
Get well soon wishes
are also extended to Flo Shinder
(8:30am Earlybirds). She says thanks to the 8:30am group for the
card. She has been diagnosed with bad bursitis in her hip which makes
sitting and standing up very painful. She is being treated with cortisone
shots and needs to rest. We do hope she will be back swimming
soon!
Francois Audet (x-7:30am Earlybirds)
reports that the photography program he’s taking at Algonquin College is hard
work (7 courses each term) and has thus limited the amount of time he has to
exercise and sleep. He will be finishing the program in seven weeks, so we
hope to see him back then!
Jo-Ann Holden (x-8:30am Earlybirds) has a
web site devoted to skiing: http://www.musicianonskis.ca/About_the_Site.html.
Thanks to Chantel DeBoer (7:30am Earlybirds) for the
Victor Davis movie DVD!

Information
My apologies to everyone for my
inability to communicate at the pool this past week due to laryngitis (though
perhaps some of you enjoyed the lack of nagging!). It’s getting better so
I hope to be able to raise my voice by Monday.
Congrats to those Earlybirds and
Whitecaps “A” who recently did time trials: 200 choice on Feb 18th
and a 400 free or IM on Feb 28th / 29th.
A few of you have asked what other
time trials are planned for Earlybirds and Whitecaps “A” this term, so here’s
the scoop:
2 x 50: Mon Mar 10th
2 x 100: Tue/Wed Mar
25/26th
1500/800: Tue/Wed Apr
1/2nd (this is for all groups, including Whitecaps “B” and
Nightcaps)
200 or 400: Thu/Fri Apr 10/11th
Relays: (4x50 free and medley
relays) Thu/Fri Apr 17/18th
Your feedback is requested on the
current Whitecaps “A” lane arrangements. Thanks to Francois Parent and Debby Whately for their
input.

attendance statistics. Those with perfect attendance for the session will
receive a certificate. There are now just 4 swimmers with perfect weekday attendance

“As I discovered
recently, a simple fall on the ice while skating that you think nothing of at
the time, done artistically enough, can damage your insides - liver, pancreas or
the like. Usually nothing a healthy person can't recover from in a few
weeks, but the doc told me a 50K ski is not part of the plan :-(. But
seriously, if you do fall, say, with a closed fist to the gut, and the pain is
below your ribs and not getting better after a few days, get it checked out. It
isn't always just a matter of Advil and physio.”
Sat Feb
23rd
Three Carleton swimmers
participated: Gi Wu, George Tombler
and Lynn
Marshall.
George and rival Ken Hatch (Swimming West Y Masters)
carefully chose different events so that they could each win 4 events!
Gi, in his first meet as a “real”
Master (he’s now in the 25-29 age group and the younger group, 18-24, is not
recognized internationally) had some great swims, especially his sizzling 50fs
of 28.64 which got everyone talking not only for winning his heat, but as he got
away with a bit of a flying start! And
Other swimmers of note
include Marty Raymond (x-Carleton
Masters, now with Technosport) who set Ontario records for men’s 45-49 in 100,
200 and 800 free, and 95 years young Eugene
Lehman of Montreal who set a World Record in 50 fly of 2:40!
The official results
aren’t yet posted, but here’s a summary of how we
did:
George
Tombler (Whitecaps “B”, 80-84):
1st 200fs, 50bk, 50br, 100br
Gi
Wu (Whitecaps “A”, 25-29):
1st 100fs, 50bk; 3rd 50fs,
50fl
Lynn
Marshall (Coach, 45-49): 1st
800fs (National Record: 9:40.27), 100bk (Provincial Record: 1:16.69), 200bk
(National Record: 2:38.38), 100fl (National Record:
1:11.27)
Sheila
Kealey (Whitecaps “A”) hasn’t been around
the pool much lately as she’s been doing lots of travelling to compete in Canada
Cup Ski races, mostly 5k and 10k in length. As of December she was sitting
12th in the women’s Haywood NorAm series, see: http://www.cccski.com/main.asp?cmd=doc&ID=4816&lan=0
and as of February, she’s 19th in the Teck Cominico Sprint Series: http://www.cccski.com/dbfiles/1135.pdf.
Well done Sheila – keep up the good work!
Ask the
Coach
Dear Coach:
I just started with the 6:30am
group and would like to improve my technique. Any suggestions? New
Very Earlybird
Dear N.V. Earlybird: Starting
Wed Mar 5th, we’ll be running technique clinics in the diving well
during Wednesday’s 6:30am swim (as we have the whole deep end on
Wednesdays). Also feel free to ask for tips during workout. With any
luck, you’ll be able to hear me next week!
Dear
Coach: You had lots of tips about
legal turns in the last newsletter. As I’m a triathlete and will do most
of my swims in open water, is it a bad idea to work on my turns? A
Triathlete
Dear A. Triathlete: Working on
your turns is important for everyone, including triathletes. Learning to
do good turns and good push-offs will improve your flexibility and streamlining
and teach you to get a better “feel” for the water. Ask your coach for
some tips.
Dear
Coach: Is it ok to swim when I have
a cold? Does it depend on the symptoms? Sniffly
Swimmer
Dear S. Swimmer: The general
rule of thumb is that it’s ok to exercise if you don’t have a fever and your
cold is above the neck (e.g. stuffed nose). If the cold has progressed
into your lungs and/or you have a fever, it is better to rest. Your body
is normally pretty good at telling you whether it’s up to doing a workout or not
– listen to it!
