Swimmer Notes

Swimmer Updates:

Elizabeth Parsons (x-Nightcaps) reports that her third child, Edward, was born on Feb 15th.  He was 12 days early and a whopping 10lbs 6oz.  Brother Stephen and sister Isabelle are happy with their new brother, but they think he cries a lot (he doesn't).  Elizabeth hopes to be back in the pool in the spring.  Congratulations to Elizabeth and Mike and the whole family!  Check out the photos at: http://album.walma.org/.

Congratulations to Kristi Dean (6:30am Earlybirds / Coach) and Jim McConnery on their wedding Sat Mar 29th.

March Break week (March 10-14th) was a dangerous one for Carleton swimmers and their teeth!  That’s the week that Coach Mits Kachi had to undergo emergency dental surgery due to an abscessed tooth and infection.  He was out of commission for a few days due to the strong pain killers prescribed.  The same week Chris Kent (8:30am Earlybirds) had a cracked tooth that got infected.  The infection spread quite a lot before he was put on antibiotics, so he was quite ill and then, to add insult to injury, he had an allergic reaction to penicillin.  He was finally able to get back in the pool on Fri Mar 28th.

Rob Trimbee (6:30 & 7:30am Earlybirds) is the National Broadcast Reading Service (NBRS) President (see: http://www.nbrscanada.com).  NBRS has two divisions, VoicePrint and AudioVision.  VoicePrint Canada is on a membership drive.  For $15 per person – tax receipt issued – your donation helps more than 3.2 million Canadians isolated from society because they cannot see or see well enough to independently read or access news and information.  VoicePrint’s 900-plus volunteer readers narrate more than 35 hours of newspaper and magazine articles aloud each business day.  VoicePrint can be heard on cable, satellite and online.  Ask Rob Trimbee for further details: rtrimbee@nbrscanada.com or 613-594-8402.

On July 5th Kristi Dean (6:30am Earlybirds / Coach) will be participating in the CNIB Camp, Lake Joseph Triathlon to raise money for cancer research.  If you’d like to sponsor her, go to: http://pmhf2.akaraisin.com/pledge/Participant/Home.aspx?seid=471&mid=9&pid=32185 or go to: http://www.joesteam.ca and select “Pledge” and enter Kristi’s name.

Sporty Women Take Note:  Bushtukah (203 Richmond Rd) is hosting its first annual SWEET (Sporty Women’s Evening of Empowerment and Tips) on Sun Apr 6th 7-9pm.  The evening is free of charge and there will be motivational talks, dessert, a fashion show, door prizes, discounts, and lots more.  Full details at: http://bushtukah.com/page.cfm?pageID=344.  If you plan to attend, please RSVP ASAP!

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Should I add weight training (strength training) to improve my swimming?  Improving Swimmer

Dear I. Swimmer:  Weights is good for you in general, but can impact your performance at swim practice due to fatigue.  There have been a few articles on weights in the media lately.  You’ll find one in the “Swimmer Notes” section above and there was another one in the previous newsletter.  Unless you are already swimming five or more times per week, you’ll likely improve your swimming by swimming more, rather than adding cross training (such as weights).

Dear Coach:  I accidentally deleted the newsletter before I read it.  Can you send me another copy?  Careless Swimmer

Dear C. Swimmer:  All the newsletters are posted on the web site.  Just go to http://carletonmasters.tripod.com and click on the newsletter link (near the top, and another near the bottom of the main page).

Dear Coach:  How can I best care for my swim gear (suit, cap, goggles, etc.) to prolong its life?  New Swimmer

Dear N. Swimmer:  First, I recommend a swim suit made of long lasting polyester (as opposed to lycra).  Polyester suits will last about a year of daily wear, compared to about two months for lycra.  To prolong the life of your suit, rinse it in fresh water after practice.  You can also buy special soap to remove the chlorine (though I’ve never used that myself).  Similarly, you should rinse your cap and goggles after workout.  Latex caps will last longer if you dry them and sprinkle a bit of baby powder inside.
