Facility Closure
and Shower Closure Notes
The entire Athletics facility will
be closed April 19th – May 4th inclusive for annual
maintenance. This includes the weight room and locker rooms.
The main showers in
both the men’s and women’s locker rooms will be renovated during this time, but
the work will not be completed until June
2nd. Thus from May 5 – June 2nd
the locker rooms and washrooms will be open but the showers will be
closed.
Limited showers will be
available as follows (only those near the pool are listed
here):
Women: Alternate
Needs and Women’s Instructor rooms (2120 and 2122) – accessible from the pool
deck.
Men: Varsity
Team Rooms (1160, 1164, 1164C) – accessible from 1182A near the
elevator.
In addition, temporary showers on
the pool deck for rinsing may be available.
During this time, to
avoid congestion in the showers, the following will be in
effect:
- only members will have access to
the facilities
- adjustments to the pool swim
schedule have been made, including:
- the late
evening swims are cancelled
- the
weekend afternoon swims are shortened (3-5pm only)

I reported in the last
newsletter that it had been a few years since Bill Westcott (Whitecaps “A”)’s last meet.
In fact, prior to this month’s Technosport meet, his last meet was 27
years ago!! Well done, Bill!
In early 2006, Lynn Marshall (Coach) actually set an
Ontario Record in women’s 45-49 SCM 200m breaststroke – the one and only
breaststroke record she’s ever held (to put it gently, my breaststroke is
“weak”!). At this year’s Ontario Provincials (end of March), order was
restored to the universe as that record was broken by Kathy McKnight of the
Aurora Ducks.
Flo Shinder (8:30am Earlybirds) is back in
good health and returned to the 8:30am group on Apr 9th. We all
missed Flo and are very glad to see her back at the
pool!

Nose Clips for
Winter Session
Summary
First, a big thank you to all the
coaches: regular coaches: Mits
Kachi (Tue/Thu Whitecaps “B” and Nightcaps) and Blake Christie (Mon Whitecaps “B”); the
other Saturday coaches this term:
Thanks also to Bill Westcott (Whitecaps “A”), Gi Wu (Whitecaps “A”) and Rob Trimbee (6:30am Earlybirds) for helping
put in the blocks for the last day’s relays; and to the 8:30am Earlybirds (group effort) for taking
them out. My apologies to the 7:30am and 8:30am Earlybirds for the lack of
the traditional “bubbles” during the last workout. I have no idea what
possessed the maintenance worker to dismantle the plug while we were using them!
And a very big thank you to Margaret King (6:30/8:30am Earlybirds) and
all the 8:30am Earlybirds for the
“bouquet” of helium balloons and chocolate at the last workout – what a fun
surprise!
Here's the summary of the attendance

omissions, please do let me know.

Time Trial and Relay
Summary:
The information below on most
improved and fastest swimmers is taken from the time trials done during
the winter session, and includes the relay splits from the end of term
relays. Times done in competitions are not included. If
your times are not listed here and you're curious, just e-mail me for
details. (I have all time trial times since May
2001.)
There were 34 women and 26
men who improved in at least one event. I believe those are the highest
numbers ever! There were some huge improvements, with six swimmers
improving by more than 9sec/100m in at least one event. Most improved
overall was Carla Sowinski (7:30am
Earlybirds) improving her 400fs by 1:08.5 (17.1sec/100m). Next was
Rada Flekkel (8:30am Earlybirds)
who improved her 50fs by 8.2 sec (16.4sec/100m). Third overall was the
most improved man, Sebastien
Robillard-Cardinal (Whitecaps “A”) who improved his 100IM by 12.1
sec. He was followed closely by Penny
Estabrooks (8:30am Earlybirds) who improved her 200fs by 23.5 sec
(11.8sec/100m). The other two swimmers improving by almost 10sec/100m were
Lynn Davies (8:30am Earlybirds)
who improved her 50fs by 4.9 sec (9.8sec/100m) and Carmel MacNeil (7:30am Earlybirds) who
improved her 800fs by 1:16 (9.5sec/100m). Swimmers improving in the most
events were Rhys Goldstein (7:30am
Earlybirds) in 6 events, and Alex
Russell (8:30am Earlybirds) and Carmel MacNeil (7:30am Earlybirds) both
improving in 5 events.
The International Point Scores (link
to web page below) are used to determine the best swims. There
were 15 women and 20 men scoring 400 points or above in at least one
event – again higher numbers than usual! Hilary March (Whitecaps “A”) had the
highest score with a whopping 706 for a 29.2 50fs. Next was Jamie Stephenson (ROCS) with 645 for 18:17
in 1500fs. Also over 600 were Steve
Nordstrum (6:30am Earlybirds) with 622 for 2:27.2 in 200IM and
Lydia Sanschagrin (6:30am
Earlybirds) for 620 for 30.9 in 50fs. Scoring over 550 were Jeremy Nichol (6:30am Earlybirds) with
2:29.5 worth 599 in 200IM, Tony
Revitt (6:30am Earlybirds) with 1:00.9 in 100fs worth 593, Kerry Murphy (7:30am Earlybirds) with 39.4
in 50br worth 588 and Rhys
Goldstein (7:30am Earlybirds) with 552 for 1:02.7 in 100fs. Ten
other swimmers scored between 500 and 550 points. Swimmers scoring over
400 points in the most events were Pete
Lithgow (Whitecaps “A”) in 7 events, and Lydia Sanschagrin (6:30am Earlybirds),
Tim Kilby (Whitecaps “A”/Coach),
and Tony Revitt (6:30am Earlybirds
in 6 events.
The top 3 improvements and the top 3
times for each event are also listed below, as are the results of the
relays.

Ask the
Coach
Dear Coach:
I would like to register for
whitecaps child safety supervision fall-winter 2011. That's when my child-to-be
will be the minimum three years old. I cannot seem to do so online. Is
there anything you can do? Eager Dad-to-be (aka Steven
Morton)
Dear E.D-t-b: You will, of
course, need to wait until 2011 to do the registration! Congrats and see
the announcement of this event in the “Swimmer Notes”
above.
Dear
Coach: What do you recommend for
cross-training for swimming? A Triathlete
Dear A. Triathlete: As a
triathlete, you are likely already doing enough other aerobic stuff (with your
running and cycling). Some strength training and/or flexibility training
can help with swimming, but generally it’s best to put the extra time into
(more) swimming unless you’re already doing about 5 workouts (approx. 5-6hrs)
per week. A general weights program is a good place to start. Core
strength is important (abs / back, e.g. pilates, abs work, yoga, etc.), and
flexibility of shoulders and ankles is also key.
Dear
Coach: Can you please re-post the
links to the pool schedules so that I can figure out where to swim while the
Carleton pool is closed? Deleted the Last Newsletter – Oops
