Swimmer Notes

Swimmer Updates:

Jennifer Stewart (Whitecaps “B”) would like to say thank you to everyone who contributed to the shower present and attended the party at Nicole Galvin’s (Whitecaps “A”).  Jennifer says, “It was delightful to share my excitement about the baby with everyone from swimming.”

Jessica Kamps (x-Earlybirds and Whitecaps “A”) has just accepted a job in Massachusetts.  She will be working at an environmental learning center in a forest.  There is a lake nearby, so she may be able to do some swimming!

Congratulations to Susan Nevitt-Yelle (8:30am Earlybirds) on being chosen to be part of “Team StayPut 2008”, a sponsorship from Goody hair accessories for active women.  Out of 2700 applicants, just 225 were selected (45 in Canada and 180 in the US)!  You can read about the team at: http://www.teamstayput.com/.

Engagement Party:  Dawn Walsh (7:30am Earlybirds) is hosting an engagement party for Jill Patrick (7:30am Earlybirds) and Jose Vivanco (Whitecaps “A”).  Jim Lee (7:30am Earlybirds) will be the minister at their wedding, so the upcoming wedding is certainly a big celebration for Carleton Masters!  Below is the fancy invitation created by Dawn with photos of both Jose and Jill competing at a competition in Montreal.  If the invitation doesn’t come out below, you can also view it at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/jilljoseeng.jpg.  And just in case that doesn’t work either, here are the highlights: 6:30pm Sat May 31st at 684 Sandra Avenue.  BYOB, lawn chair and a pot luck dish to share, but no gifts!  Please RSVP to dawnwalsh@sympatico.ca by Tue May 20th

Toronto Masters Swimmer Obituary:  Paul Beregi died recently of cancer.  You may remember a note about him in newsletter #145 (June 1st, 2006) where he was featured in a Toronto Star article, as despite being diagnosed with terminal cancer, he was doing well and still swimming.  Once he was no longer able to swim, his decline was rapid.  Here’s his obituary: http://www.torontostarclassifieds.com/OLCSApp/do/attribute_search_side?categoryName=DEATHS&classId=008&attri_1=beregi&detail=true&sort=none&pages=10.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  We have an outdoor pool at home, and I’m wondering if anyone has tried using some of the devices either to create a current or some sort of bungee system, to allow for swimming without all the turns?  Any recommendations or negative feedback?  Potential Treadmill Swimmer

Dear P.T. Swimmer:  If any readers have any feedback or suggestions, please send them in!  Here’s what I’ve heard…  Endless pools (http://www.endlesspools.com/) are very expensive.  There are other (cheaper) small pools with a similar idea, e.g. http://www.swimergy.com/.  However, as you already have a pool, you probably want to look for a tether.  Basically, the bottom line is that you will likely get a pretty good workout, but it would be (in my opinion) horrifically boring.  The other thing to keep in mind is that with resistance swimming or tethered swimming (when you are still and the water is either still or moving) the physics is different from “normal” swimming (when you are moving and the water is mostly still).  Thus, it’s not as good (for improving your swimming) as “real” swimming.  Also, depending on the size of your pool, you could produce lots of waves that could interfere with your strokes.  However, there are some pretty inexpensive devices out there, e.g. http://www.kk.org/cooltools/archives/002710.php, for $27, http://www.swim-in-place.com/Aquacise%20Buy%20Products.html,  for $34 or $44, and http://swimriptide.com/ for $75, so it’s probably worth a try!

Dear Coach:  Is it ok to exercise when I’m sick?  Keen Swimmer

Dear K. Swimmer:  It depends…  Guidelines say that it’s generally ok if the symptoms are above the neck, but not if they’re below.  It can be dangerous to exercise with a fever due to the extra strain on the heart.  See: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/exercise/AN01097.

Dear Coach:  I won’t be swimming this summer, but I’d like to continue to receive the newsletter.  Is that possible?  Want to Keep in Touch

Dear W.t.K.i. Touch:  I only clean up the newsletter lists once per year (in the fall), so everyone stays on the list until then, unless they ask to be removed.  In the fall, those who have not registered have the option of remaining on the e-newsletter list as an alumnus.
