Swimmer Notes

Expectant Swimmers:  Congratulations to Jolene Harvey and Tony Revitt (both 6:30am Earlybirds) who are expecting their first child in October.  And Jolene competed in the 10k last weekend!

Graduation Award:  Suzanne Lalonde (x-Whitecaps “B”) just had her graduation ceremony from Queen’s Teacher’s College.  She received the Frank J. Fowler Award, awarded to the primary-junior teacher who demonstrates the qualities of an exemplary educator and is based on academic standing, performance in student teaching, and contributions to student life in the Faculty of Education.  There were 350 students in her division, so this is outstanding.  Awesome job, Suzanne!!

Jill and Jose’s Engagement Party:  A big thank you to Lisa Hans (x-Whitecaps) for hosting and Dawn Walsh (7:30am Earlybirds) for coordinating the RSVPs for Jill Patrick (7:30am Earlybirds) and Jose Vivanco (Whitecaps “A”)’s engagement party on Sat May 31st.  There was a great turn out, lots of good food and conversation, and a wonderful presentation of some fun gifts by George Tombler (Whitecaps “B”).  Jill and Jose thanked everyone for attending.

Meech Lake Sat Jun 28th 2k Swim Carpool Needed:  Carla Sowinski (7:30am Earlybirds) would like to participate in the 2k Meech Lake Technosport race on Sat June 28th, but she doesn’t have a car!  If you can help, please contact Carla at: carla_sowinski@hotmail.com

Volunteers Needed:  Ravens of Carleton Swimming (ROCS) has a number of kids participating in the Eastern Ontario Long Course Swim Championships June 6-8th at the Nepean Sportsplex.  ROCS needs to provide volunteers (timers, marshals, runners, stroke and turn judges) and Masters swimmers are most welcome to help out.  There are morning, afternoon, and evening sessions all three days and you can volunteer for one or more sessions.  Contact Sandy Lawson (Whitecaps “A”) for more details at: Sandra.Lawson@Ontario.ca.

Third Wall Theatre Strawberry Social:  Charles McFarland (7:30am Earlybirds) is one of the two Artistic Associates of the Third Wall Theatre.  The Theatre is holding its annual Strawberry Social event at Earnscliffe, 140 Sussex Drive, kindly hosted by the British High Commissioner and Mrs Cary.  There will be sparkling wine, Earnscliffe chef's canapés, strawberries and entertainment.  5-7pm Fri Jun 20th, tickets are $75 with a tax receipt for $50.

John Williamson Update:  Some of you may remember John and Diane Williamson (x-Whitecaps) who swam with us before they moved to Maidenhead, England in 2000.  I recently got back in touch with John.  He’s now living in York, England, having moved around a bit holding various jobs since leaving Nortel in 2001.  John and Diane split up in 2003 but John regularly sees the kids along with Diane her new husband.  Two recent photos of John and the four kids: Emily, Erica, Trent and Devon, can be found at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/08photo.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  How do you pass someone when you’re doing backstroke? Afraid of Collisions

Dear A.o. Collisions:  The safest thing to do is to roll onto your front and do freestyle until you complete the pass.

Dear Coach:  Is it permitted to do a dolphin kick during the glide phase of breaststroke?  A Breaststroker

Dear A. Breaststroker:  No, that is illegal.  You can lift your feet together, but not lower them together in breaststroke (except for the one dolphin kick permitted as part of the underwater pull out).

Dear Coach:  How did the “Man from Atlantis” drill get its name?  Young Swimmer

Dear Y. Swimmer:  From the TV series of the same name that ran in 1977-1978, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_from_Atlantis.  You can also see a clip of the opening theme at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkLpM7HQ8SU&feature=related
