that he and Melanie Patina (also
x-Whitecaps “A”) took part in the Riverkeeper Triathlon on Sat Jun

Nose Clips for
Spring Session
Summary
First, a big thank you to all the
coaches: regular coaches: Mits
Kachi (Tue/Thu Whitecaps “B”) and Blake Christie (Mon Whitecaps “B”); the
other Saturday coaches this term: Kristi Dean
and Tim Kilby; and Pool
Staff sub-coach: Ann Marie
Pullen.
Thanks also to Francois Parent and Gi Wu (Whitecaps “A”) for helping put in
the blocks for the last day’s relays; and to the 8:30am Earlybirds (group effort) for taking
them out. And a very big thank you to ring-leader Margaret King (6:30am Earlybirds) and all
the Earlybirds for the chocolate
and gift card.
Here's the summary of the attendance
and time trials for the spring session. If you notice any errors or
omissions, please do let me know.
Attendance:
Here are the attendance statistics
for the spring session (excluding Saturdays). There are four swimmers with
perfect weekday attendance for the whole term: Ian Lorimer (6:30am Earlybirds), Margaret King (6:30am Earlybirds), Amir Banihashemi (8:30am Earlybirds) and
Colette Kenney (8:30am
Earlybirds). Well done!
Honorable mention goes to Jose Vivanco (Whitecaps “A”) and Sean Kelly (7:30am Earlybirds).
Although they each missed two workouts, that was due to circumstances beyond
their control. Sean made special arrangements to get to the pool without
going past the men’s change room due to strong scents during the construction,
and twice the Control Desk staff did not permit him to get in via the alternate
route. And Jose missed the last two workouts of the session as he was busy
preparing for his and Jill’s wedding on Sat Jun
28th.

Time Trial and Relay
Summary:
The information below on most
improved and fastest swimmers is taken from the time trials done during
the spring session, and includes the relay splits from the end of term
relays. Times done in competitions are not included. If
your times are not listed here and you're curious, just e-mail me for
details. (I have all time trial times since May
2001.)
There were 22 women and 28
men who improved in at least one event. There were four women improving by
more than 8sec/100m: Sandra
Amezcua (6:30am Earlybirds) improved her 100IM by 8.7 seconds.
Coach Kristi Dean (6:30am
Earlybirds) improved her 100fs by 8.5 seconds. Lucie Boudreau (8:30am Earlybirds) improved
her 50fs by 4.2 seconds (8.4sec/100m) and Cori Dinovitzer (6:30am Earlybirds)
improved her 200IM by over 16 seconds (8.1sec/100m). The most improved man
was Amir Banihashemi (8:30am
Earlybirds) who improved his 200fs by 14 seconds
(7.0sec/100m).
The International Point Scores (link
to web page below) are used to determine the best swims. There were 5
women and 10 men scoring 400 points or above in at least one event.
Three men scored over 600 points: Steve
Nordstrum (6:30am Earlybirds)’s 28.7 50fl earned 646 points, just one
point ahead of Jamie Stephenson
(ROCS)’s 1500fs of 18:17 worth 645 points. Jeremy Nichol (Whitecaps “A”) scored 630
points for his 29.0 50fl. The top woman was Maureen Mahoney (Whitecaps “A”) with 539
points for her 5:27.1 400fs.
The top 3 improvements and the top 3
times for each event are also listed below, as are the results of the
relays.
Give yourself a pat on the back if
you participated in the time trials!

Did any Carleton swimmers do this
swim?
Sat Jun
28th Long Course (50m pool) Masters Meet, Parc Jean-Drapeau,
Four Carleton swimmers attended this
cool and rainy outdoor swim meet: George
Tombler (Whitecaps “B”), Francois
Parent (Whitecaps “A”), Gi
Wu (Whitecaps “A”), and Lynn
Marshall (Coach). This is the third time they’ve held this
meet. Two years ago it was a very hot day and our main concerns were
dehydration and sunburn. Last year it was warm and started out sunny, with
a couple of rain showers in the afternoon. This year it was overcast all
day, cold in the morning and rainy all afternoon. I’m predicting snow for
next year J ! We don’t yet
have the official results and placings, but here’s a brief summary.
George (80-84) was happy with his five
swims (100br, 100bk, 50br, 50bk, 200fs), the last four of which were
back-to-back. His best swim was his 100bk (2:34).
Francois (40-44) was content with his times
(100br, 50fs, 200br) given that the meet was long course. His 100br was
his best swim (1:37).
Gi (25-29) swam three events (50fl, 50fs,
50br) and was very happy with his 50fl (32) and reasonably happy with his 50fs
(29). Always a crowd pleaser, he entertained us with a very splashy
somersault entry when he lost his balance at the start of his 50br.
Luckily the starter called a false start!
Ask the
Coach
Dear Coach:
How can I swim straighter in open
water? Wandering Swimmer
Dear W. Swimmer: When swimming
in open water, you need to look forward occasionally to see where you’re going.
How often depends on how much you tend to “wander”. The key is to
find some landmarks to aim for – the higher up and larger the better. For
example, aiming for a large tree or house on the far shore, behind the marker is
often easier that searching for a marker in a sea of swim caps and kayaks (which
almost always seem to be the same colour as the markers!). If you have a
chance to get in the water ahead of time, do so, and see what landmarks you can
find to shoot for. If you get off course, a bit of breaststroke (which
makes it very easy to look forward) can be helpful. You can also practice
looking forward occasionally while pool swimming to practice doing this quickly
and efficiently without your legs sinking too far.
Dear Coach:
Can you please remind all
late-comers that they should join in with those already swimming when they
arrive, and not start the warm-up
from the beginning? Frustrated Punctual
Swimmer
Dear F.P. Swimmer:
Done!!
Dear Coach:
Where can I buy fins and paddles
locally? Swimmer Who Wants Toys for
Dear S.W.W.T.f.L. Swimming:
Your best bet locally is Motionware Source for Sports in
Barrhaven.
Update:
Mary-Lou Dunnigan (7:30am Earlybirds) reports that
Motionware has lots of fins and a great supply of training suits. Thanks,
Mary-Lou!
Dear
Coach: Where can I buy a racing
body-suit locally? Racing Swimmer
Dear R. Swimmer: I’ve bought
all my racing suits on-line but try Motionware (see
above).
Dear
Coach: Where do you buy your
prescription goggles? Visually-Challenged
Swimmer
Dear V-C. Swimmer: Most Sports
Experts locations carry Speedo prescription goggles for about
$25.

Coach: Where did you get your new
