"Mistakes are
life's way of teaching you. Your capacity for occasional blunders is inseparable
from your capacity to reach your goals. No one wins them all, and your failures,
when they happen, are just part of your growth. Shake off your blunders. How
will you know your limits without an occasional failure? Never quit. Your turn
will come." – Og Mandino

Swimmer
Notes
Swimmers
on the “Disabled List”:
Debbie Lee (7:30am Earlybirds)
reports that she was one of Tim
Kilby’s
(6:30am Earlybirds /
Whitecaps / Coach) recovery room nurses after his back surgery this past week.
He says “hi” to everyone!
Amir Banihashemi (7:30/8:30am Earlybirds)
missed this past week’s swimming due to an emergency appendectomy on Sun Aug
24th. He is sorry that he missed the last week of the term and
hopes to be back in the pool in a couple of weeks.
Flo Shinder (7:30/8:30am Earlybirds), who
fractured and dislocated her shoulder last month, reports that she was able to
lift a 1lb weight for the first time this week! Thus she is making some
progress with her physiotherapy, but she is not allowed to do too much until
after her next appointment with her doctor on Sept 11th. She
says “hello” to everyone and will be back swimming as soon as she is
allowed.
Don Wells (Whitecaps) sprained his shoulder
while spotting his sons, Sam and
Ben (Safety Supervision), on a
trampoline. He was back swimming Saturday morning, but with limited reach
on one side he could only do a bit of freestyle, as it even hurts to hold a kick
board.
NSERC
Award: In addition to having
surgery (see above), Amir
Banihashemi (7:30am Earlybirds) has been awarded one of NSERC (National Science and Engineering
Research Council)’s one hundred 2008 Discovery
Accelerator Supplements (DAS). The DAS Program provides substantial and
timely resources to a small group of outstanding researchers who have a
well-established research program, and who show strong potential to become
international leaders in their respective area of research. Each supplement is
valued at $120,000 over three years, and provides recipients with additional
resources to compete with the best in the world. Congratulations,
Professor Amir!
Phelps’ 7th
Gold??: There has been a lot of press about
Michael Phelps win by 1/100th of a second in the 100 fly and lots of
photos out there to show him winning or losing (your choice).
Interestingly, Omega (who provides the timing pads) is one of Phelps’
sponsors! Here are a few links for those who are

Summary
First, a big thank you to: regular

Here's the summary of the attendance
and time trials for the summer session. If you notice any errors or
omissions, please do let me know. Those of you who earned awards (top 3
most improved overall, top 3 fastest overall, relay winners overall, best
attendance) will receive them via e-mail.
Attendance:
Here are the attendance statistics
for the summer session (excluding Saturdays). No one had perfect
attendance this term. Gi Wu
(Whitecaps) was the closest, missing only 1 workout. However, as he is
often late, he probably swam less in total than some who attended fewer workouts
J , thus honourable
mention to Francois Audet (7:30am
Earlybirds), Katie Yelle (7:30am
Earlybirds) and George Tombler
(Whitecaps) who each missed just two weekday
workouts.

Time Trial and Relay
Summary:
The information below on most
improved and fastest swimmers is taken from the time trials done during
the summer session, and includes the relay splits from the end of term
relays. Times done in competitions are not included. If
your times are not listed here and you're curious, just e-mail me for
details. (I have all time trial times since May
2001.)
There were 15 women and 9
men who improved in at least one event. The biggest improvement by
far was by Ken
Johnson (6:30am Earlybirds) who improved his 800fs by
3:17 or 24.6sec/100m! Next were Sean Grimes (7:30am
Earlybirds) who improved his 50br by 4.5sec (9.0sec/100m), and Gi Wu
(Whitecaps) who improved his 400fs by 34.2sec (8.6sec/100m). The most
improved women were Cori Dinovitzer (7:30am
Earlybirds) improving her 400IM by 27sec (6.8sec/100m), Colette
Kenney (7:30am Earlybirds) improving her 100fl by
6.5sec, and Lucie
Boudreau (7:30am Earlybirds) improving by 4.8sec in
100fs. Very significant improvements – well
done!
The International Point Scores (link
to web page below) are used to determine the best swims. There were 5
women and 7men scoring 400 points or above in at least one event. Two
swimmers scored over 600 points: Lynn Marshall
(Whtiecaps/Coach) with 695 points for 19:12 in her 1500, and Jamie
Stephenson (6:30am Earlybirds) with 614 points for
4:39.7 in 400fs. Also scoring over 500 points were: Sarah
Dobbin (7:30am Earlybirds) with 523 for 41.1 in 50br,
and Tim
Kilby (6:30am Earlybirds/Whitecaps/Coach) with
503 for 5:03.0 in 400fs.
The top 3 improvements and the top 3
times for each event are also listed below, as are the results of the
relays.
Give yourself a pat on the back if
you participated in the time trials!

Ask the
Coach
Dear Coach:
Why were all those Olympic swimmers
breathing only on one side in their freestyle? My Shoulders Hurt Just
Watching
Dear M.S.H.J.W: There sure
were a lot of swimmers breathing only on one side in freestyle, and many with
quite lop-sided strokes. The amount of time a swimmer spends racing is
very small compared to the amount of time spent training, and the need for
oxygen is more important than symmetry, especially in the longer races.
Thus single-side breathing while racing works well for many swimmers. (Did
you notice that most swimmers don’t breathe at all in 50m free?) I expect
that many of the swimmers do breathe bi-laterally in training. Either that
or they are young enough or lucky enough to have no shoulder problems.
Dara Torres (41) does a lot of backstroke training to avoid some of the wear and
tear on her shoulders.
Dear
Coach: There sure was some amazing
swimming at the Olympics. But also some swimmers who should know better
making rookie mistakes. Surely Alain Bernard (anchor of the 4x100 free
relay for
Dear S.C. Swimmer: It
certainly was interesting to see elite-level swimmers making mistakes that young
age group swimmers (and Masters swimmers!) learn not to do. As well as the
drafting, there was Katie Hoff finishing her 400 free with her wrist bent and
losing the gold. And, of course, Cavic gliding in and lifting his head on
the 100 fly finish, not to mention Phelps’ goggles filling up with water in his
200 fly.
I have to say
that the most amazing swim (in my opinion!) of the entire Olympics got very
little press (as it was right after the men’s 100 fly). Brit Rebecca
Adlington, 19, blew away the rest of the field in the women’s 800 free.
She won in 8:14.10, over 6 seconds ahead of 2nd place, and broke
American Janet Evans’ world record of 8:16.22 set in August 1989 when Becky was just 6 months
old! Her two gold medals (she was the one who out-touched Hoff in the 400
free) make her the most successful British Olympic swimmer in over 100
years.
