Session Dates

The Fall session ends on Thu Dec 18th (evening groups) / Fri Dec 19th (morning groups).  The Winter session starts on Mon Jan 5th (morning groups ONLY) / Tue Jan 6th (evening groups).  There will be some optional interim workouts – see the next paragraph:

Masters Interim Workout Schedule

Between the Fall and Winter Masters sessions there will be some interim workouts as per the following schedule.  These workouts are only available for those registered for Fall and/or Winter Masters with a valid Athletics membership (or staff/student card) for the time/date of the swim.  Those with morning-only memberships please note that your membership is good all day on reduced hours days, which includes all the interim workout dates except Mon Jan 5th.  There will be no safety supervision available during the interim workouts.  Please note that the cost and procedure for paying for interim workouts has changed due to a new Athletics rule.  To swim at an interim workout (as well as showing your membership card or staff/student card) you must pay a $4 public swim fee at the Control Centre (downstairs where you check in) and ask for a receipt.  The receipt is to be given to the coach on the pool deck.  No receipt, no swim, no exceptions!!!  The coaches are not permitted to accept cash!  Your cooperation is appreciated.  Here is the schedule:

Sat Dec 20th 9:30-10:30am shallow end

Mon Dec 22nd 5:30-6:30pm deep end

Tue Dec 23rd 5:30-6:30pm deep end

Swimmer Notes

Swimmer Updates:

Susan Nevitt-Yelle (7:30am Earlybirds) and Alex Cullen (x-6:30am Earlybirds) are shown in the picture of the first time Rudy Award winners at: http://www.trirudy.com/region/oe/.  Theresa Kavanagh (x-6:30am Earlybirds) is not pictured as this was her third time.

Congratulations to Erin Hill (7:30am Earlybirds) who passed her Masters Thesis proposal defense on Fri Nov 28th.  She’s studying health psychology and her thesis is on cervical cancer screening behaviours and barriers.

Jordan Cooper (7:10pm Whitecaps II) was the only swimmer at the 7:10pm workout on snowy Tue Dec 9th.  An attendance total of 1 is a record low, but even more interesting is that Jordan actually lives in Montreal (so what’s your excuse J)!!

Due to popular request, here’s the recipe for Guy and Mary Jane Phillips’ (7:10pm Earlybirds) Chicken Satay from the potluck party.  Thanks to Guy for writing this out!

     Ingredients (for 4 servings)

     Preparation

Transit Strike Carpools:  Those of you unable to get to campus due to the OCTranspo strike are welcome to contact me with carpool requests, and I’ll do my best to match you up with someone in the same Masters swim group who lives in your area.

Bubbles, Anyone?:  We plan to have the bubbler running for a few minutes at the end of the last workout of the term for the deep end groups (6pm Whitecaps I; Earlybirds).  Those in the 7:10pm Whitecaps II group are welcome to arrive 10min early to join the 6pm Whitecaps I group for “bubbles” on Thu Dec 18th.

Thu Dec 18th Dinner:  A group of swimmers from the 6pm Whitecaps I group is planning to go to the Lone Star (Baseline & Fisher) after workout on Thu Dec 18th.  All (from all groups, including alumni!) are welcome.  For those who swim in the later evening groups and who do not want to miss their swim, feel free to join us later on for a drink.

Support the Next Generation of Triathletes:  The Bytown Storm Triathlon team (several of whom train with Nightcaps) is having its first ever fundraiser to raise money for some much needed equipment.  They are raffling off four gift baskets with values of $50-$1400!  Tickets are $5 or 3 for $10, and are available from Bytown Coach Greg Kealey (Nightcaps) in person at Nightcaps workout or via e-mail at: endurancentre1@yahoo.ca.  For full details of the gift baskets, check out: http://www.bytowntriathlon.com/Links_and_Articles.html.   Draw date is Tue Dec 16th.

Support the Wilfred Laurier University Pool:  The 50m pool at WLU in Waterloo, ON is scheduled to close on Dec 31st.  Please sign the following petition to keep it open: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/WLUpool.  (You don’t have to make a donation to sign the petition, and donations go to ipetitions, not WLU!)

Swim Suits for Sale:  The swim suits that Lynn has for sale are available whenever Lynn is coaching – just ask!  There are lots of women’s suits to choose from, but only a few men’s.

50c Swim Caps:  Triathlete and x-Carleton Masters swimmer Ellen Pazdzior has kindly donated a large number of mostly latex swim caps, most worn only once during a triathlon.  The money raised by selling these for 50c will go towards next year’s $45 annual fee to register Carleton Masters with Masters Swimming Ontario.  Just ask Lynn if you’re interested in looking at these.

Nose Clips for Sale:  Cost $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Fall Session Information

In this section of the newsletter, you’ll find information related to the Fall swim workouts, including coaching changes, upcoming time trials, and weekday attendance statistics.

Thanks to the men for using the back stairs while the tiling was repaired at the bottom of the stairs from the men’s change room to the pool deck.  This work is now complete.

Due to the bad weather and transit strike, many of you missed the “partner pulls” at the 6pm Whitecaps I and Earlybirds workouts on Tue Dec 9th / Wed Dec 10th.  However, those who did make it did a good job.  Special kudos to Renee Robert and Colette Kenney (8:30am Earlybirds) who did at least one partner pull of all four strokes, and to Francois Audet, Madelayne De Grace, and Ried Van Melle (7:30am Earlybirds) who managed a 3-way breaststroke (one person pulling, one doing the right leg and the other doing the left leg)!

Thanks to 6pm Whitecaps I for swapping with ROCS and swimming in the shallow end on Thu Dec 11th, to allow the young kids to have a fun swim meet.

Here are the time trials planned for the Fall session:

Mon Oct 6th: 400fs or 400IM: all except Nightcaps (no Monday workout!)

Tue/Wed Nov 11/12th: 2 x 50: 6pm Whitecaps I and Earlybirds

Tue/Wed Nov 18/19th: 1 x 200: 6pm Whitecaps I and Earlybirds

Thu/Fri Nov 27/28th: 800/1500m free: All (Note that the 800 is intended only for those over 2:15/100m, who would not have time to complete the 1500m.)

Thu/Fri Dec 4/5th: 1 x 100: 6pm Whitecaps I and Earlybirds

Thu/Fri Dec 18/19th: end of term relays (4x50 free & 4x50 medley relays): 6pm Whitecaps I and Earlybirds

Here’s a summary of the improvements in the 100m time trials on Dec 4/5th:

100fs: Jackie Lyons (6pm Whitecaps I) 7.4 seconds!; Marg Eades (6pm Whitecaps I) 6.8sec!; Carla Sowinski (7:30am Earlybirds) 5.0sec; Lucie Boudreau (8:30am Earlybirds) 4.2sec; Mihai Mateescu (6pm Whitecaps I) 4.2sec; also improving: Ken Johnson (6pm Whitecaps I) and Amir Banihashemi (8:30am Earlybirds)

100br: Ursula Scott (7:30am Earlybirds): 9.1 seconds!!

100fl: Karen Jensen (7:30am Earlybirds): 8.5 seconds!!; also improving: Tanya Larouche (8:30am Earlybirds)

100IM: Christiane Guibord (6pm Whitecaps I) 2.9 seconds; also improving: Lina Vincent (6pm Whitecaps I), Angela Davis (7:30am Earlybirds), Penny Estabrooks (8:30am Earlybirds)

Congratulations to all!

There are still 5 swimmers with perfect weekday attendance (we don’t take attendance on Saturdays).  Those who maintain perfect weekday attendance throughout the term will receive a certificate.  The weather and bus strike played havoc with last week’s attendance.

Masters Swimming Competitions

You must register annually with Masters Swimming Ontario (MSO) if you want to compete in Masters Swimming competitions.  Registration for 2008-2009 is now underway.  The main club registration mailing is now in.  However, it’s not too late for you to pay the $36 (including $1 postage/handling) by cash or cheque payable to “Lynn Marshall”.  Your MSO membership will be good until Dec 31st, 2009.  Contact Lynn for more details.  Note that you must register with MSO at least 3 weeks before the due date of the entry for your first competition.

Full details on all Ontario Masters competitions can be found at: http://www.mastersswimmingontario.ca/competition/schedule01.htm

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  What are the age limits (minimum, etc.) for Masters swimming?  New Masters Swimmer

Dear N.M. Swimmer:  That depends!  To compete in Masters swimming competitions internationally, you must be at least 25.  (There is no maximum age, and swimmers up to age 101 have competed!)  To compete in Masters swimming competitions in Canada, you must be at least 18 on the day of the competition.  Note, however, that your age is calculated as your age on Dec 31st of the year in which the meet is held.  To train with Carleton Masters, the minimum age is 14, as all Carleton Masters must be Carleton Athletics members, and 14 is the minimum age to become a member.

Dear Coach:  I have a friend who is interested in trying Carleton Masters.  Can you remind me of the minimum requirements?  Masters Swimmer Recruiter

Dear M.S. Recruiter:  To join Carleton Masters, swimmers must be able to swim 1000m in an hour (including breaks), and already know the basics of at least two competitive strokes (usually freestyle and backstroke or breaststroke).  Beginners are likely better off joining at the beginning of a session (to be able to take advantage of the stroke drills we do for the first month).  If your friend would like to try a Masters workout for free, ask Lynn to arrange for a pass.

Dear Coach:  I didn’t get this week’s newsletter.  Can you please send it to me again?  Newsletter Fan

Dear N. Fan:  It’s possible that your ISP decided that the newsletter is spam (as it is sent as a bulletin).  Thus, check your junk / bulk mail box.  If it’s not there, then your best bet is to read the newsletter on-line at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/anewsletter.html.  On that page, you’ll find a “change detection” box where you can subscribe to be notified by e-mail when that web page is changed (i.e. when I post a new newsletter).  Alternatively, you can always read the newsletter on the bulletin board at the pool.
