of the space between your dreams and reality. If you can dream it, you can make

Session Dates and
General Information
The Fall session has ended.
There will be some optional interim workouts – see the next paragraph. The
Winter session starts on Mon Jan
5th (morning groups ONLY – though there is an interim
workout at 6pm) / Tue Jan
6th (evening groups).
Note that the current registration numbers for
Winter’s 8:30am Earlybirds, 8:10pm Nightcaps, and Child Safety Supervision are
very low. If you are planning to participate, please register ASAP to
ensure that these programs will continue to be offered! Note also that for
Athletics to break even on the Interim workouts, we need to average about 13
swimmers per workout. Please attend when you can, so that we can continue
to offer Interim workouts in the future. Thanks for your support!
The Interim and Winter
workout themes have been posted on the bulletin board and web site: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/mastplanwint09.pdf.
The next Masters newsletter will be sent a week or two into the Winter
session, depending on how much news there is to report!
Masters Interim
Workout Schedule
Between the Fall and Winter Masters
sessions there will be some interim workouts as per the following
schedule. These workouts are only available for those registered for Fall
and/or Winter Masters with a valid Athletics membership (or staff/student card)
for the time/date of the swim. Those with morning-only memberships please
note that your membership is good all day on reduced hours days, which includes
all the interim workout dates except Mon Jan 5th. There
will be no safety supervision available during the interim workouts.
Please note that
the cost and procedure for paying for interim workouts has changed due to a new
Athletics rule. To swim at an interim workout (as well
as showing your membership card or staff/student card) you must pay a $4 public swim fee at the Control
Centre (downstairs where you check in) and ask for a receipt. The receipt is to be given
to the coach on the pool deck. No receipt, no swim, no
exceptions!!! The coaches are not permitted to accept
cash! Your cooperation is appreciated. Here is the

Updates:
Margie Bailey (x-Whitecaps “A”) and her husband,
Mike, welcomed a beautiful baby girl (and first child) Mayhew Aria on May
26th. Margie reports that their daughter is
“a lovely little one, and thoroughly
enjoys her jogging stroller, which is wonderfully lucky for me!”
Margie hopes to be back swimming soon, and plans to bring Mayhew to Child Safety
Supervision when she’s old enough!
Congratulations to
Greg Kealey (8:10pm Nightcaps) who
received the Ontario Association of Triathletes (OAT) “Coach of the Year” award!
Geordie McConnell (Head Coach, Ottawa Triathlon Club) says: “Greg has made
enormous contributions to our tri community over the last 8 or 10 years,
especially in his work with Kids of Steel.” A full list of winners can be
found at: http://www.triathlonontario.com/hm/inside.php?id=715&au=1229445416.
Congratulations also to
Stephane Raynaud (7:10pm Whitecaps
II) who got his Canadian Citzenship on Tue Dec 16th! He’d been
avoiding US business trips until his citizenship came through, so he was off to
Thu Dec
18th Dinner: Fourteen hardy souls braved
the snow and transit strike to attend the end-of-term dinner at the Baseline
Lone Star. As well as many of the 6pm Whitecaps I swimmers, it was great
to see “alumni” Lisa Hans and
Vanessa Woods, as well as George’s
wife, Poppy Tombler. We also
celebrated the upcoming birthdays of George
Tombler (84 on Dec 22nd), and Francois Parent (41, less than half
George’s age, on Dec 27th!). Thanks to Nicole Galvin and

Fall Session
Summary
First, a big thank you to: regular
coach: Mits Kachi (Tue/Thu 7:10pm
Whitecaps II; 8:10pm Nightcaps) and the other Saturday coaches this term:
I trust that the 7:10pm Whitecaps II
and 8:10pm Nightcaps enjoyed their deep end swim for the last day of the session
(Thu Dec 18th). That meant that all groups got to enjoy the
“bubbles” – for many, the highlight of the term!
Thanks to all those who helped with
the starting blocks for the end of term relays: Ann Morneau, Gi Wu, and Jose Vivanco (6pm Whitecaps I), Ian Lorimer and others (7:30am Earlybirds),
and all the 8:30am Earlybirds. Many thanks also to Guy Phillips (7:10pm Whitecaps II) who was
my scribe for the 6pm relays. Without his help, getting all the splits for
6 relay teams would have been very difficult!
And a very big thank you to the
Earlybirds for the card, enormous box of cookies and gift certificate for “The
Foolish Chicken” restaurant. The Foolish Chicken is owned by Natalie Aucoin (6pm Whitecaps I) and her
husband. She bakes the awesome desserts!
Here's the summary of the attendance
and time trials for the Fall session. If you notice any errors or
omissions, please do let me know. Those of you who earned awards (best
attendance, top 3 most improved overall, top 3 fastest overall, relay winners
overall, best attendance) will receive certificates in hard copy early in the
Winter term and/or via e-mail.
Attendance:
There were 5 swimmers maintaining
perfect weekday attendance for the Fall term. Congratulations to Irene Marushko,
We will need other
swimmers to step up to the plate for perfect attendance in the Winter term as
both Marg Eades (6pm Whitecaps I)
and Margaret King (8:30am
Earlybirds) will miss the first part of the Winter term due to vacation
plans.
My apologies to
Mary Jane Phillips (7:10pm
Whitecaps II) for reporting last time that she’d missed 4 workouts, when she’s
only missed 3!

Time Trial and Relay
Summary:
The information below on most
improved and fastest swimmers is taken from the time trials done during
the fall session, and includes the relay splits from the end of term
relays. Times done in competitions are not included. If
your times are not listed here and you're curious, just e-mail me for
details. (I have all time trial times since May
2001.)
There were 25 women and 11
men who improved in at least one event. Irene Marushko (7:30am Earlybirds) was the
most improved by a large margin, improving her 50bk by 12.5 seconds
(25.0sec/100m) – wow! Elaine
Cooper was next, improving her 800fs by 1:38 (12.3sec/100m).
Derek Roach (7:30am
Earlybirds) was the most improved man, taking 2:55 off his 1500fs
(11.7sec/100m). Jade Gregory
(8:10pm Nightcaps) was 3rd most improved woman taking 2:53 off her
1500fs (11.5sec/100m). Rounding out the top 3 for the men were Amir Banihashemi (8:30am Earlybirds)
improving his 200br by 18.7 seconds (9.4sec/100m), and Mihai Mateescu (6pm Whitecaps I) improving
his 200fs by 8.6 seconds (4.3/100m). Honourable mention goes to Carla Sowinski (7:30am Earlybirds) who
improved in no less than 6 different events!
The International Point Scores (link
to web page below) are used to determine the best swims. There were 6
women and 11 men scoring 400 points or above in at least one event.
Heather Macdonald (7:30am
Earlybirds) had the best score with 642 points for 37.8 in 50br. Mihai Mateescu (6pm Whitecaps I) was top of
the men with 578 points for 27.8 in 50fs. Second for the men was Aaron MacKnight (6pm Whitecaps I) with 512
points for 1:04.2 in 100fs. The next 3 men were very close and all over
500, with Francois Audet (7:30am
Earlybirds) and Sebastien
Robillard-Cardinal (6pm Whitecaps I) tying for 3rd with
506 points (Francois for 20:03 in 1500fs, and Seb for 29.3 in 50fs). They
were closely followed for 5th by Greg
McKay (7:30am Earlybirds) with 505 points for 20:04 in 1500fs.
Rounding out the top 3 for the women, was a tie for 2nd with Jane Imai and Joanna Brown (both 8:10pm Nightcaps)
earning 452 points for 22:51 in 1500fs. Heather Macdonald scored over 400 points in 6
different events (actually, all 6 were over 575 points)! Pete Lithgow (6pm Whitecaps I) scored over
400 points in 5 events (with 399 in a 6th).
For the relays, here are some
interesting statistics. Christiane
Guibord (6pm Whitecaps I) was the only freestyler (of 11 teams) to
swim faster on the medley relay. All the others were faster on the free
relay which was swum first. Penny
Estabrooks (8:30am Earlybirds) did exactly the same time for her 50
fly as she did on her 50 free! Siobhan
Welsh’s (8:30am Earlybirds) 50 breast was 3 seconds faster than her 50 free! Elaine Cooper (6pm Whitecaps I) had a
faster time on her 50 back than on her 50 free, but that was likely due to
giving the other teams a significant head start on the free relay due to a
miscommunication! As this is the first 50 free time I have for Elaine, she
has a good chance at getting one of the most improved swimmer awards again next
time! The “team spirit” award for the best (loudest) cheering for his
team-mates goes to Amir
Banihashemi (8:30am Earlybirds).
All those improving and all those
scoring over 400 points, as well as the top 3 improvements and the top 3 times
for each event are also listed below, as are the results of the relays.
Give yourself a pat on the back if
you participated in the time trials!

Elite
Cross-Country Ski Races in BC (late November / early December)
Sheila
Kealey (6pm Whitecaps I) recently returned
from a ski racing trip in BC, where she was competing in the NorAm series
against most of the best skiers in
“The field is one of
the most competitive I've seen with all the best North Americans minus about
four women who are racing the World Cup in Europe (Sara Renner, Chandra
Crawford, Perriane Jones, and Kikkan Randall). The Americans are all here too
and since their early season races were cancelled due to lack of snow, and
everyone seems to be in pretty good shape trying to make national teams with the
Olympics next year.
Silverstar's at altitude and we haven't been
skiing on snow much, so the first races are typically a bit of a shock, and
performances have been improving. Among the Canadian women, I was 15th in the
skate sprint, 14th in the 10k skate last weekend, and this week 12th in the
15k skate, 13th in the classic sprint, and 12th in the 10k classic. The
night race was interesting since it was incredibly cold (one racer ran off the
course to get mittens) and they hadn't quite figured out the lights for the
women's race - a technical downhill was a tunnel of darkness since the light's
weren't working.
Here are some summaries
and pictures from www.xcottawa.ca.

Ask the
Coach
Dear Coach:
Can you provide
your ear drops recipe? Water in my
Ears
Dear W.i.m.
Ears: Sure! You need a small plastic bottle, so
it might be worth buying a bottle of the expensive stuff (e.g. burosol, etc.)
from the pharmacy and then reusing the bottle. The home-made recipe is
about 90% rubbing alcohol (this makes any water left in your ears evaporate) and
about 10% hydrogen peroxide or vinegar (this changes the pH in your ear to avoid
nasty things growing)! Put a few drops in each ear (leaving in for a few
seconds and then draining) after your post-swim
shower.
Dear
Coach: When will the shallow end
lane rope with all the sharp plastic pieces be replaced? Swimmer with Sore
Arm
Dear S.w.S. Arm: Two new lane
ropes have arrived. The staff is currently determining which lanes ropes
are in the greatest need of replacement. They are taking into account
whether or not the lane ropes can be properly tightened, as well as the state of
the plastic pieces (some of which are now like ninja stars J).
Dear
Coach: What’s the minimum age for
the 6pm Whitecaps I Child Safety Supervision? New
Mom
Dear N. Mom: Congratulations
on the new arrival. The minimum age for Safety Supervision is 3 years
old.
Dear
Coach: Can you review the difference
between IM and IMO again? Still Confused
Swimmer
Dear S.C. Swimmer: No problem
at all. If you’re ever confused about our notation, please do ask!
If you are told that a
repeat (or a series of repeats) is IM, then you divide each repeat into four and
do the first ¼ fly, the 2nd ¼ back, the 3rd ¼ breast, and
the 4th ¼ free. Thus if you were doing 4 x 100 IM, each 100
would be 25m fly, 25m back, 25m breast and 25m free. You would do the
entire 100m without stopping but there would be rest between the 100s. A
trick for figuring out how many lengths to do of each stroke (in a 25m pool) is
to just move the decimal place over 2 spots. Thus a 500IM is 5 lengths
(i.e. 125m) of each stroke, etc.
If you are told to do a
series of repeats in IMO (i.e. IM order), then you do one repeat of fly, one of
back, one of breast, and one of free. So 4 x 100 IMO, would be 100 fly
(continuous, stopping to rest after the entire 100m), then 100 back, 100 breast,
and finally 100 free.
