Winter
Registration
If you are planning to swim this
term and haven’t yet registered, please do so as soon as possible! Details
on the Winter programs, dates, costs, etc. can be found in the “Reminders”
section at the end of the newsletter. Registration is open for both
Winter. I am maintaining a waiting list for Winter 6pm Whitecaps I.
Those on the waiting list will be updated again in another week or so as to
their status. On-line registration is available for the Winter session at:
https://secure.e-registernow.com/cgi-bin/mkpayment.cgi?state=947.
Look After Your
Valuables
If at all possible, leave your
valuables at home when you come to the pool. If you have to bring your
valuables, one of the small pay lockers by the Control Desk is
recommended. It is generally also safe to bring your valuables onto the
pool deck, but note that the coaches cannot keep their eyes on your bags at all
times! As well as occasional locker break ins, there have been some recent
thefts from the parking lots:
“On January 7th, 2009,
Department of University Safety officers received six separate reports of theft
from vehicles left in parking lots 5 and 3. The thefts occurred throughout the
day and early evening. In each case, locked vehicles were entered and contents
removed. Most often, entry was gained through damage to the passenger side door
or trunk.
Ottawa Police has advised of an increase in vehicle
theft across the region. Students, staff and faculty are reminded not to leave
valuable items visible in their vehicles and to remove them if at all possible.
If you see any suspicious activity, please report it immediately to the DUS at
613-520-4444 or by using assistance phones located across
campus.”

Updates:
Kirsten Stoebenau (6pm Whitecaps I) reports that
Kieran Andry Stoebenau Whittaker was
born after an almost too quick labor at 3:11 a.m. on December 21st, weighing in
at 8 pounds 4 ounces. Mom and baby are both doing great. It’s no
wonder she couldn’t lug him and herself around as much as she would like during
the last month as he was about 1 pound heavier than big sister, Ayli (Safety
Supervision).
Ashley Kotarba (x-Nightcaps) is back in
Sean Kerwin (7:10pm Whitecaps II) is in
Kitchener-Waterloo on work term this term. He plans to swim in K-W on his
work term and will join us again in September.
Jill Patrick (7:30am Earlybirds) had
breakfast with Leona Crabb
(x-7:30am Earlybirds) last month. Leona is working in Petawawa with the
military and loves her job. She is hoping to get back into swimming as
soon as the base pool opens (they’ve had a ton of different problems over the
past year).
Derek Baas (x-6pm Whitecaps I) won’t be
swimming this term as he’s scheduled for surgery to get a tube in his left ear
sometime in February, due to worse than usual ear problems the last 6
months. The surgery will rule out swimming for 6-18 months, but should
resolve his hearing problems. His wife, Andrea Chandler (6pm Whitecaps I), and
their boys Freddy and Stuart (Safety Supervision) are swimming
this term.

Masters Swimming
Related “Old Dog, New Trick” Joke: This was sent to
me by a Masters swimmer who said that it reminded him of a T-shirt he has that
says, “Masters swimming: where age and experience triumph over youth and
talent.”
A wealthy old lady decides to go on a photo safari in
Just as the leopard is about to leap the old poodle exclaims loudly, 'Boy,
that was one delicious leopard! I wonder if there are any more around
here?' Hearing this, the young leopard halts his attack in mid-strike, a
look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. 'Whew!'
Says the leopard, 'That was close! That old poodle nearly had
me!'
Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene
from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it
for protection from the leopard. So off he goes, but the old poodle sees
him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figures that something must
be up.
The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the
beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard. The young leopard
is furious at being made a fool of and says, 'Here, monkey, hop on my back and
see what's going to happen to that conniving canine!
Now, the
old poodle sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back and thinks, 'What
am I going to do now?' Instead of running, the dog sits down with his back
to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet. Just when they get
close enough to hear, the old poodle says. 'Where's that damn monkey? I sent him
off an hour ago to bring me another leopard!
Moral of this
story... Don't mess with old farts ... age and treachery will always overcome
youth and skill! Bullshit and brilliance only come with age and
experience.

Ask the
Coach
Dear Coach:
How many
calories do I burn in a 1hr Masters Swim workout? Still Burning off Xmas
Dinner
Dear S.B.o.X.
Dinner: The number of calories you burn is related to your metabolism,
weight, activity and exercise intensity level. For a rough guideline, you
can check out: http://www.nutristrategy.com/activitylist4.htm which gives
the approximate number of calories burned during an hour of over 300 different
activities for people weighing 130, 155 and 190lbs. For example, if you
weigh 155lbs and do 1hr of swimming (mixed strokes and intensities), according
to this chart you’d burn in the range of 550-700
calories.
Dear Coach:
I’m having
problems understanding (and seeing) the workouts. What do you
suggest? New Swimmer
Dear N.
Swimmer: Please ask the coach if anything is unclear (in either
sense!). If
Dear
Coach: What are
the rules for starting a race? New
Competitor
Dear N.
Competitor: For Masters Swimming competitions, you may start in the water,
dive off the edge, or dive off the starting block (your choice) in all strokes
except backstroke. For backstroke you must start in the water. For
backstroke, you should start with both hands holding the wall (facing the wall),
but sometimes they are lenient for Masters. If you are starting from the
side or the block, you must put one foot or both at the edge of the deck / front
of the block when the whistle blows. When the starter says “take your
marks” you must (fairly quickly) move to your starting position and then stay
completely still until the starting signal. Most competitions have a “no
false start” rule which means that if you start early or are moving when the
starting signal is given, you are disqualified. (If you need more details
that the above, just ask again!)
Dear
Coach: What are
the rules for relay takeovers? Another New
Competitor
Dear A.N.
Competitor: At least some part of the starting swimmer’s body must still
be in contact with the edge of the pool or starting block when the first part of
the finishing swimmer’s body touches the wall. In other words, unlike a
regular start, all the relay swimmers except the first one may be in motion at
their start. Apart from that, the usual rules apply for starts and
finishes of the appropriate stroke(s).
